This place was one reason we were drawn to Nova Scotia; it did not disappoint. The reconstruction was made several decades ago when attention to historical fact might give way to over-romanticizing. However, we did not see that.

The reconstruction was complete, except that there were no outhouses (the guides suggested that open country surrounding the site did not require privies). Moving from room to room, enactors explained who had lived there and how they knew what they were telling us. The settlers sent yearly reports back to France with details of day to day life and who was doing what.

The original settlement did not last long, but the reconstruction was a rich reminder of the effort needed to make even a start at occupying a foreign place.

The guide at the Annapolis Tidal Generating Station recommended that we visit this historic site since it was only a few miles down the road. The guide there was dressed in period costume and gave an informative introduction before we entered the settlement. We learned a lot of the local history and what life was like in the 1600's. It is definitely worth spending a little time here.

Glad I did not miss this historical recreation of the French Fort. The Parks employees are in costume and walking history lessons, very engaging and informative.
They brings to life the remarkable frontier experience and the relationship between the French and M'kMaq whose intermarried and became the Acadian people.
