Not to be confused with the Basilica with the same name right up the hill! Beautiful exterior with a simpler interior.

We were walking through the old town of St. John’s and came across the cathedral. We were warmly welcomed to come inside and see the church. It is a very impressive interior.

The Anglican Cathedral of St. John the Baptist is rich and rife with religious, social, political and economic history. Built in the Gothic Revivalist style, construction of the current stone church began in 1847 and finished in 1850. The church was designated a National Historic Site of Canada in 1979 due, in part, to its unique architecture as well as the lasting impact it has had on Anglicans in Newfoundland and Labrador over the centuries.

I am rating the site as “average” because I was only able to view the external structure. The church was closed for an event when I stopped by, which was unfortunate. I was looking forward to seeing the beautiful interiors, including the high curved pillars, stained glass windows and altar, amongst other things. Nevertheless, the exterior of this Anglican church, with its rugged construction, is an impressive religious site even from the outside.

Random Trivia: The present-day structure is built on land once used for public hangings up until the 1750s!

we enjoy checking out churches, especially historic churches. We were not able to get in this church due to a funeral in progress. but we waited and finally got a great tour by volunteer members of the church. Even a tune played on the huge organ.
