My boyfriend and I stayed one night here during a road trip out west. This was the best priced place we found in Winnipeg, and we had a comfortable stay. It is very much a hostel, decorated like a cross between an eclectic cottage and a university students house. It won't be for everyone, but worked for us!

Room: We had a private room on the 2nd floor. Bed was comfortable, sheets were clean, and it was quiet for sleeping. Lots of outlets, wifi ok, seating and tables to put your luggage. Like the rest of the house, it had a hodgepodge of decor and mismatched furniture, but who cares when you are sleeping with your eyes closed :) Carpet was stained, so we didn't walk around barefoot.

Bathroom: Nice bathroom on the second floor, right by our bedroom. The showers we used were in the basement. They are TINY, so my 6'2" boyfriend had trouble showering without smacking his limbs on the walls, but they will get you clean.

Common areas: We did some dishes in the kitchen, seemed like it had everything you would need if you wanted to prepare some food. There's a fridge where you can store stuff as well. A group of people were watching soccer in the living room, which looked comfortable, although we didn't stay long enough to spend time hanging out.

Location: We had a car so this was very easy for us to find, and easy to get around. Street parking right in front of the hostel was very convenient. Nice restaurants nearby (use the hostel provided map - great recommendations).

Overall we would recommend this place to anyone on a budget, or anyone looking for a traditional hostel with a relaxed social atmosphere.

The Guest House is a big house right downtown and we really enjoyed our stay. Since it is a hostel they offer shared rooms but we booked a private room and checking in was easy. People working were friendly and helpful and the host Bill is genuine and down to earth making us feel welcomed. We travel a lot and restaurant and fast food just doesn’t cut it so we liked being able to use the kitchen to make meals. They try to keep it clean and organized. Many of the guests are from around the world traveling and most agree that the “House has a good vibe.”

I stayed here for a night when I was passing through Winnipeg at the real end of the travellers' season. In fact the hostel was closed for the season, but ...

A quiet location (it was December) and there was street parking available. The location was great for me as I had a medical appointment at the local hospital the next morning. Bill (the host) is a fountain of knowledge of the area and the city

Room Tip: This is a hostel with dorm rooms.

I started hosteling in 1977 in rural Ireland, a time when everything was worn yet comforting. So it is at Winnipeg's Guest House International, not a place for modern amenities as much as a refuge from them. This hostel is for individuals who crave an atmosphere dominated by simplicity, humility, and the brother/sisterhood of shared space, random conversations, and simple kindnesses. Not for everyone, sure, but for me it was a sanctuary from the world of "customer service, value, and complimentary wi-fi." The Guest House is an easy bus ride from the airport (off at Sherbrook and Sara) and a comfortable walking distance to downtown Winnipeg. It's a place of quiet welcome, hot tea, pot luck dinners, and a living example of authentic hosteling.

Room Tip: I was in Winnipeg to deliver a presentation at a conference so I needed some extra quiet at night to work. The private room on the second floor was perfect. Feel asleep at night to the rain outside my open window. Again, a place for people with very simple tastes. There was wifi, it worked most the time. Late night soaks in the old tub upstairs were a special treat.

I picked this location because it was the highest rated hostel on the site. That is a mistake.

First, this hostel is located in a bad section of town. While that ordinarily would not stop me, there is government (or council) flats right across the street. The closest beer store is in the back of a hotel and it is a window with steel bars on it, I kid you not.

Second, this is an old house. Ordinarily that is not a problem either, but it is not electrically wired like a newer house. My room has a lot of extension cords and no overhead light. The sign on the microwave states to not start the microwave and the hot water kettle at the same time. It apparently overloads the house wiring. Even on a older house, lodging would normally be required to update the wiring. This place is a fire waiting to happen.

Third, and this is the worst, the rooms and beds are filthy. I cannot see the color of the floor because it is so filthy in my room. There is clumps of dirt on the floor and the underside of the beds have not seen a vacuum in like...ever. The windows have been damaged at some point and there is a piece of Plexiglas and wood to hold it in. You can't open the window if you wanted ventilation let alone a fire. The room is set up for 5 people but likely would not be rated for more than two bunk beds or 4 people...at the most. There is no fire exit in this room.

Fourth, the toilet and the showers are located on the main floor (one) and in the basement. They too are filthy. The blinds in the one shower room are broken and filthy.

Whatever you do, do not stay here. While you may say "I can stay for a night", I stayed for a night and regretted it. There is a reason this hostel is not part of any larger organization such as HI, it is horribly bad. The pictures here are not recent. If you value your safety, do not stay here for any reason.

Lastly, if you did not think that anything else was important, this location is not close to anything other than a Tim Hortons or a McDonald.

Room Tip: Choose another hostel. This place is used by the homeless or travelers that do not know any better.

The Guest House is a short walk from the downtown and the edge of the residential area of Wolseley. Many new trendy restaurants and pubs are a short walk away on Sherbrook. There is a Liquor Store a short walk away. We have no connection to the Sherbrook Hotel.

The smoke and heat detectors are inspected annually. Nearly all wiring in the house is new. There is overhead lighting at the entrance to the room you were in and four other lights. Many people use their laptops and I-Pads in their bed – so there are extension cords and power bars available. We don’t recommend the fridge, microwave and kettle being plugged into the same outlet – as there are others in the kitchen.

The sheets are washed after each guest. The rooms are cleaned daily. If a guest has made, or is making a mess afterwards – feel free to inform the front desk. The carpet in your room is green. There are two doors and three windows in the main floor room you were in. The windows are not damaged. Two out of three windows in the room open – as does the door to the outside. The ‘Plexiglas’ is energy efficient nitrogen-filled double pane. There is no wood – other than the wooden blinds.

There are two toilets and showers on the main floor. They are cleaned daily – but it is a public place. If you have a problem – feel free to ask at the desk. (You indicated in your review that the service from the three women working here was good. The owner manager was out of town the one night you were here) A few of the blinds sections in one of the bathrooms are slightly bent – but it is fully operational. We’ll bend them back – but as it is a public place it could possibly happen again.

You can walk downtown in ten to 15 minutes. There are numerous restaurants (Stellas, Fitzroy, Charisma etc.) and pubs (Cousins, Bella Vista etc.) within a five minute walk from here. They are nearly all closer than the Tim Hortons and McDonalds. There is also grocery store 100 metres away. We have a map listing them all at the front desk.

We don’t allow local people to stay here – there are just travellers staying here. The pictures on this site were taken this summer. The HI in Winnipeg is out of business. We were asked join that organization but chose not to. We have hosted their national president, as well as travel writers from Rough Guides and Lonely Planet. We are also off all booking sites as they take a large percentage of a guest’s entire stay. But your four emails and one phone call on the day of your arrival indicate it is not hard to book here directly or contact us.
Enjoy your travels !
