You stand at the fort and think about the harsh conditions people endured when this fort was built over many years. There names are etched on a nearby rock. The fort is worth a visit. You also may see a polar bear walking nearby.

This was very interesting and a great way to learn about Canadian history. Interpretive guide was very interesting and the fact that the facility had been so well maintained was outstanding.

July 2017 - As part of a 3 hour zodiac boat Beluga whale adventure, our group stopped at the Prince of Wales Fort to hear about the history associated with the Fort. We parked our zodiac boat and followed a park ranger up a long boardwalk past beautiful Arctic flowers to the Fort entrance. The Fort is currently under reconstruction.

Inside of the Fort, a ranger was dressed in period costume as the Fort's leader. He further explained that the Fort was used by the Hudson Bay Company 100 years before the Canadian Confederation took place. The Parks Canada ranger who was dressed in period costume stood next to one of the cannons with an old musket. After three attempts, he was able to fire the musket resulting in a very loud bang. He said the musket was only accurate up to 50 yards.

It was a gorgeous day and the entire tour was less than one hour. The mosquitoes were relentless.

We enjoyed a sunny warm July Park day at this historical site. Park personnel guided us on an informative tour of the grounds. We strolled along a walk way bordered by the most beautiful arctic wild flowers.and awesome views. We enjoyed interactive exhibits and sharing time with the Churchill Community. What a great day!!!!!

The Fort is currently under renovation by Parks Canada, and there is little to it but the stone structure of the original fort. However, if you visit the fort in conjunction with the Sloop's Cove walking tour you can gain a real appreciation as to the important influence this area had on the future of Canada. Samuel Hearne and other members of the Hudson Bay Company occupied this fort and the surrounding area a full one-hundred years before Confederation. The Parks Canada Guides who conduct both of these tours provide a very good narrative as to life and the conditions these men lived under, as well as the historical importance the fort had in the establishment of Canada.
