An awe-inspiring, picturesque hike to an important local landmark. The volcanic plug is a spindle tower of black rock. Read up on it and be prepared for the distance and potential changes in weather and terrain.

It's a tough dayhike, taking about 3 hours to get to the summit at a good pace. The final bit to get to the actual summit is fairly daunting and you usually see quite a few people turn around at the bottom of the final climb. That's not too bad though as the views from this point are phenomenal as well. Most of the hike from the Rubble Creek Parking Lot is beautiful. Starting in thick forest, then incredible alpine meadows, then the incredible Black Tusk. If you make it to the top of Black Tusk you will be glad you did!

I recommend this trip, it was a very prety trail and an excellent work out. I rode a mountain bike up the "microwave tower" road from Whistler (via hwy 99). The road is currently closed to motor traffic because a "bridge" is out. Because the road to microwave tower is so steep, I pushed my bike most of the way up, it was less effort. The road was covered with snow (in late July) near the top and was still impassable.
It took about 3 hours to go from Whistler to the towers. It was a very pretty trip. After I got to the towers I climbed up to the top of a ridge to the north, from there you had a great view of Black Tusk. I continued on to the South East to another ridge to the foot of Black Tusk. Unfortunatly, I had started too late in the day to continue on and had to turn back. I figured the round trip from downtown Whistler to Black Tusk and back would take about 8 hours (assuming you ride amountain bike back down). It may be a good idea to bring an extra pair of brake pads for your bike too, because I burned through one pair on the way down).

I just hiked up Black Tusk from the microwave towers and thought it was fantastic. It took us around 2.5 hrs to get to the top, it was tough because you are so far above sea level, the air is quite thin. If you are not a tree hugger I would suggest that you talk to a local with a 4*4 or rent one and get directions to the service road up. It is still a tough hike, but well worth it. And for the real enthusiasts you can start down near the valley. You should give yourselves at least two days as it is, so I have been told 36 kms round trip. Do it, it is well worth it.
