“Very appealing setting”
Reviewed 21 February 2012

My first two visits to this location were to the Rain Coast Cafe and this was our first time to the Spotted Bear. It was a quiet evening and we enjoyed the intimate setting. It is impressive what the chef can do in such a tiny kitchen. The food didn't knock our socks off--Sobo was tastier--but the setting beat Sobo by a long shot. And the food was very good, just not super flavourful. We had beet salad and shepherd's pie.

“Excellent food, simple decor.”
Reviewed 20 February 2012

Small, comfortable restaurant with simple decor and a relatively small, but very original menu choices. Food quality truly excellent. We each had a starter and a main course and each was superb. Service prompt and friendly. Open for dinner only and Sunday brunch.

“Great food but not extensive wine selection”
Reviewed 5 February 2012

Based on the previous reviews, we chose this restaurant for my husband's 45th birthday and were not disappointed! The menu isn't long but what they do, they do well. We had the tuna tartare and the beet salad to start - both excellent. My husband had the caesar (drink, not salad) as recommended by someone else and it was quite different - he really enjoyed it. I had a nice kir royale as they don't have an extensive drink selection.

We both had the duck as our entree, and it was amazing - perfectly cooked. We also ordered the braised greens (kale) and it was nicely done in a mustard cream sauce. Our one knock on this place was that their wine list isn't very extensive and didn't feature too many BC wines. We chose a couple of glasses to go with our dinner but neither were winners. And the girl who served us wasn't very knowledgeable about the wines.

For dessert we had the chocolate pot de creme, which had a bit of fleur de sel on top. It was delicious! And we also had the raspberry sorbet. We decided to get one of each (there were only 2 desserts), but quite unintentially, they went very well together! One bite of chocolate, one of raspberry, repeat. We would have also liked a cappuccino or a dessert wine but neither were available.

The service wasn't amazing but not bad either. There is only one server for the entire restaurant (26 seats) and she is also the bartender, so she was pretty busy.

We would definitely go back!

“Nice out of the way place”
Reviewed 1 February 2012

The Spotted Bear is on a side street in Tofino, not easily seen from the main road. My wife had read excellent reviews so we made a reservation and had dinner there one night. My wife had a fish dish which was excellent and I had their famous shepherds pie which is made with roast lamb. It was fantastic. Service was good and friendly. Our only negative was that we enjoyed this dinner so much we went back the next night only to find the Spotted Bear dark and locked up even though the hours of service sign in the window said it was supposed to be open. In spite of this, we will return next time we are in Tofino.
