I booked this hotel because it looked very traditional as well as being good value for money. The hotel is also ideally located for accessing the main areas of Banff.

It had taken us much longer to get to Banff from Kamloops so I had phoned ahead to let them know of our late arrival. I also requested a ground floor room as I am disabled with mobility issues.

When we finally arrived, we were checked in by a very bright and breezy receptionist.

She was very helpful and I was pleased to see that my request had been progressed.

The room that we were allocated was adjacent to a parking area so this made loading/unloading our luggage a lot easier.

Whilst I would describe the hotel as being a quaint, independently owned and having lots of character, there were a few things that I was not totally happy with.

I would never book a hotel where the rooms open directly to an outside area. It was my own fault for not looking closely at the pictures on the website.

The downside of being near to a parking area was hearing a lot of noise made by some inconsiderate fellow guests. This consisted of repeated vehicle door slamming as well as talking at the top of their voices.

One day, a timber treatment was completed outside of our room. The place absolutely stank of wood preserver for hours afterwards. We reported it to reception and they assured us that no further work was going to occur.

The furniture in the room was rather traditional whilst the bathroom was very modern.

However, there was mould in the shower cubicle which could do with a deep clean.

The bed was a rather old fashioned queen size one and it was a bit lumpy. Whilst there were a few floor and table lamps, the room was a bit dark so could do with a ceiling light.

Wifi was free however the connection was rather temperamental, flitting between different servers which caused it to freeze.

A complimentary continental breakfast was included in the room rate. It was one of the best quality breakfasts that I have ever had. The choice was good and the food was delicious. The breakfast staff were so helpful and polite.

It was a bit of a shame that the same staff member who checked us in did not check us out. The male staff member who did this appeared to be a little bit less keen and not as cheerful. In fact, his demeanour did not encourage feedback on our stay.

In conclusion, there were some positive points that we experienced during our stay.

However, the layout and design of the hotel means that I would not stay there again.

Banff hotels are expensive, and the Charlton Hotel is about average in terms of price. Breakfast is "complimentary".
Our room had a small living room with a t.v. and a pullout couch. The bathroom is on this floor. The bedroom is up a narrow curved metal staircase, which is open to the floor below. There was another t.v. and a king-size bed, which looked lovely at first glance. However, upon pulling the covers back when going to bed, we found that the bottom sheet was a flat queen size sheet that was obviously not wide enough to be tucked in at the sides. As such, the sheet quickly became wadded up with the mattress cover (also not fitted), to expose the mattress itself. Added to that, each time somebody turned over, the whole bed would shake, waking the other person. Finally, the air conditioning unit was louder than most. NOT a restful sleep!
Their "complimentary" breakfast was fine except that they served hot sausages, but no scrambled eggs or hot pancakes. A bit odd, we thought.

We probably wouldn't choose to stay at this hotel again, although if they replaced the beds and used the proper sheets for the size of bed, it would be much more attractive.

Friendly, helpful staff, great location, the hotel is clean and comfortable. We had a large, elegant, ground floor room with a spotless modern bathroom. The complimentary breakfast was also a bonus! Would recommend this hotel and would love to return one day!

Spent a week here and upon arrival we were met with a chocolate assortment in our room. Do not know why maybe because we booked a solid week. We reserved the room with a kitchenette, although the hotel is older it’s rooms/bathrooms/kitchenettes have been up dated. Water pressure/shower very nice. They have an awesome steam shower/ hot tub / indoor pool area and supply thick bath robes to venture to the pool area.
Complimentary coffee breakfast was more than adequate with a good assortment of foods.
Easy walk to downtown Banff and covered parking on site.
All in all very very pleased with our choice, no need to spend extra money on the hot pools with the in house spa area.

Great location walking distance to many restaurants and stores. Ground level rooms with great access to our vehicle with under cover parking. Rooms are very spacious and the bathroom offers a deep soak tub and separate shower. Breakfast is plentiful and with a variety of choices the staff making sure that they replenish juice coffee cereal pastries and bread etc. Highly recommend location and would return to this hotel when visiting the area again
