Such a lovely cosy little cottage, perfect for two people looking for a nice relaxing weekend away in the Peak District. Great location for walking & the pubs near by are excellent for food. Upon arrival we received a mini cheese plate & a bottle of wine for us to indulge. One thing that really stood out for me was the level of attention to detail that has gone in to this accommodation. Lots of little things have been thought of that you wouldn't necessarily expect, like the USB chargers ready for you by the side of the bed, one standard USB charger & one iPhone charger! Also, the food in the freezer & the honesty jar are such a good idea. We didn't use these but it would be really handy if you were stuck! It can (obviously) get quite cold in the winter, and it's nice that there are some curtains that close off the living room from the kitchen to keep the area warmer. I think the only niggle was the shower not being very good. The pressure is quite low & the shower head leaks quite a bit (forgot to mention this when we were leaving - sorry). It didn't cause us much of an issue.
Overall, we really really enjoyed our stay at The Old Shippon & would love to return.
Lovely cottage, everything seemed to have been considered, very comfortable, well equipped, clean, quiet, Alstonefield is a lovely little village with a great pub and an ideal base for good walks down the river Dove and the surrounding area. Thank you very much we had a great stay.
The cottage is perfect for 2 and the setting is beautiful complimented by it being in the gorgeous village of Alstonefield. The owners have put a lot of thought into the cottage and it really felt like home from home, we had everything we needed in the cottage from kitchen equipment to guide books / recommended walks / area information.
Thank you so much for making us feel welcome this weekend, I will definitely recommend your cottage and hopefully will return for another lovely stay.
We were cordially received by the owners who had provided a welcoming cream tea and a bottle of wine. The property is quietly situated well away from the road with a nice garden area. There are country walks directly accesssed outside the front gate. A pleasant stroll brings you to the delightful village of Alstonefield where there is a good quality (if a little expensive) eatery. Bath and kitchen facilities were modern and well appointed, central heating was preset; we did not need to use the wood burning stove.
Everything was modern, clean and functional.
We would have appreciated some more space in the bedroom and bathroom; and were disappointed the wi-fi didn't work the morning we left.
We have had a wonderful few days at The Old Shippon. The cottage is absolutely lovely and is well equipped. The garden is beautiful and we loved being able to sit outside in the evening sunshine. Hosts are very welcoming and we really appreciated the mouth-watering scones and cake on the table when we arrived! We also liked the idea of having provisions in the freezer and cupboards which we could have used, based on an honesty box system. In a small village location this is such a great idea. All in all, the cottage could not have suited us better.
The location is excellent. Once we had arrived we didn't use the car until we left. You can walk to Dovedale (and back!) from the cottage, and also to Hartington via Narrowdale and back along Biggin Dale. There are plenty of books, including walking and cycling guides in the cottage.
We would highly recommend this, and we are looking forward to returning!
