Description: More than a restaurant, Nicksan is a culinary experience of the highest level. In its open kitchen the ingredients of two ancestral cultures located in opposite points of the world are fused. Its owners Masayuki Niikura and Ángel Carbajal, originally from Japan and Mexico respectively, opened the first Nicksan in Los Cabos in 1994, creating amazing congruencies between the flavors of both countries. Some of the signature dishes that you can taste at our fabulous Residences Plaza location in Nuevo Vallarta are the spicy tuna small cake, the Shiromi Coriander and Maguro Lemon sushi rolls, the cucumber salad with wakame seaweed and crab, the baked scallops in mango sauce, the kara-age fish, the spinach crepe, and the gorgonzola shrimp. In our new cocktail and sake menu you will find original creations, perfect to match your lunch, dinner or just toast with friends. Come and try the best of two worlds!

Japanese sashimi/sushi. First time, it was delicious! Fresh local sashimi was so good! The only thing we did not enjoy was the tempura. It was too doughy, not crunchy at all. Second time, very good sushi and authentic miso soup. A few of our cuts of sashimi were incorrect - making the fish chewy. Our host/server was very kind and accommodating. He knew his fish!

We used a Cupocity Coupon for our first visit and the overall experience far exceeded our expectations. The sushi rolls were excellent and the rice ratio was perfect. The fried rice was yummy and the wine serving ample. They service was excellent although it is Mexico and you might wait a couple minutes to be acknowledged or brought a menu etc. We had an excellent evening and will definitely be back. The hostess was darling and Angel, our waiter, as nice as can be.

Really great sushi in Nuevo Vallarta. We had a great dinner - the ahi tosadas were amazing. Our server recommend some other great sushi rolls! Everything was so fresh and delicious. We cannot wait to go back. It was a great change from the standard Mexican type meals in Mexico. We just loved it!

Overpriced and not great food. We were disappointed when we got the bill and noticed that the ingredients were not even that fresh and the rice bowls were too small. The food is not that great either. Problem is that this guys think they are the only Japanese option in Nuevo Vallarta so I guess that's why they take advantage of the tourists.

Walked to Nicksan from the Marival Residences. As a Japanese American I was kind of puzzled by the name "Nick" as it isn't Japanese at all. Was the owner really Japanese? Why bother adding the honorific "san," which means "Mr" or "Ms?" Anyway so my impression from the street made me a little wary. When I got inside I found the surroundings a little ordinary, almost cafeteria like with few authentic decorative touches. That was ok too. I was there for the food.

Our poor waiter looked like he had the entire floor under his responsibility. He was running front to back taking orders, delivering food, and even running checks at the hostess desk. I would have loved an opportunity to chat with him a little about the menu, who Nick is and the restaurant concept. At first the food came out too quickly and we asked him to slow things down a bit. But the pace improved dramatically and we didn't feel rushed by the time dinner ended.

The food was really quite good! At the recommendation of the locals we told the waiter what we wanted to spend and to create something wonderful. We enjoyed a lot of things off the menu and a few nice surprises. The flavors were a nice marriage of Japanese and Mexican influences. The tuna sashimi wrapped surimi with serrano pepper, cilantro and ponzu sauce was balanced very nicely with a hit of spiciness at the back of your throat on the finish. We were also served a soft shell crab dish dredged in a potato starch batter and flash fried with a ponzu sauce. This one was a home run. Lastly, a California style roll came out stuffed with tempura. It had a delicious cilantro sauce.

The meal that was planned for us was mostly sushi rolls and appetizer dishes. I wonder if we set the bar too low with our budget. Next time I guess I'l order off the menu to get more variety like maybe some soups or stewed items. We left perfectly sated--not too full, yet not wishing we had ordered more. I wish we had more time here in Nuevo Vallarta so we could return to try some of the other dishes. Oh well, it gives us a good excuse to return to the Marival!!
