“Beautiful resort and wonderful staff!!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 9 March 2012

Our week at this resort was beautiful and we absolutely loved it. Because this resort was small, there was never a line up at the bars or the buffets. The main dining room was wonderful and the staff were amazing. Very accomodating, always went out of their way to make you feel special and you could tell that they loved their jobs. The rooms were very tastefully decorated and very clean. A small tip goes along way in making the staff feel appreciated.
The only negative comment would be about the nightly entertainment. They do need to improve in this area. There is not much to do in the area at night, although they are building a new casino, which I believe will open shortly.
Since this is a gated community, we felt very safe and there are security guards on the resort and the beach area.
We would definately return to this resort. Thank you for making our vacation great.

This hotel is very small. I was worried about this when we arrived as we were there with our 2 teenage children. I couldn't be more wrong. The size of the hotel made the vacation one of our best. There are no "buses" to catch to get to the beach or lobby. You get up and in 2 minutes you are anywhere.
The food was wonderful. There was enough of a variety each day to keep it interesting. The cantina lunch was spectacular. There was always a selection of fresh fruit in the buffet. The breakfast was probably the best at the buffet, no waiting for omlettes. One night they had steak for dinner and it really was a good chunk of meat. Frequently, one of the servers would help you with your plate back to your table. There were specialty coffee's and drinks. Every seat has a view of the ocean.
The beach is so beautiful. If you are a walker/jogger this beach is perfect. And it is clean for miles as well. One day we didn't get to the beach until about 11:00, there was still a selection of chairs under an umbrella!
And the sunset. WOW. A glass of champagne and that beautiful red sky-OMG.
There is very little night life but the size of the resort made it so easy to meet people that every night you could go down to the lobby bar and mingle with new friends. Our kids met tons of people and really enjoyed the evening volleyball and drinks.
The activities programme was excellent and again because of the size of the resort it was easy to get involved. With bigger resorts often times you don't even know where to go to get involved.
Our whole family enjoyed this trip, we would go back and we will certainly recommend this resort.

My wife and I just returned from a week in the sun at OGNV. What a great vacation. We have vacationed at numerous other AI resorts, most being very large, and when we booked OGNV we were a little worried that it would be to small. Well, now that we've been here we will have a hard time going to a large resort again! It was FANTASTIC! Because the resort is smaller it's a lot easier to meet people, and also just engage with the employees on a daily basis.

Anyway, on to the actual review...

ROOMS- Fresh, modern, large. i HIGHLY recommend that you request the ground floor rooms though, we were put in 116 and it was great, has it's own patio which means you get a screen door to open and let the ocean air in. The other rooms are nice, but the lack of patio or balcony is a definite negative.

FOOD- Breakfast was great, omlette station, fresh fruit, bread, cereal etc...typical breakfast, hot, fast and tasty.

Lunch - 2 options here, there is a lunch buffet which is nice or you can go the beach restaurant and order fries, hamburgers, hotdogs, etc

Dinner - 3 options, lets start with the buffet - not bad, if you get there early the food is HOT, if you get there late, well the food is lukewarm. they have a pasta station, and also another station that does tortilla's, burritos, etc. again, good food.
2nd option is LA HACIENDA, the mexican restaurant, food is tasty! we had the corn soup to start, and my wife had the sesame salmon for her main and i had the beef. all in all not bad, the beef was a little too well done for my liking, but i guess that's my fault for not requesting it medium rare.
3rd option is the ITALIAN restaurant - i can't comment on this because we didn't get a chance to eat there. from what we heard though it is good, just stay away from the linguine.

BEACH - The beach is huge, great view and warm sun. really what more could you ask for in a beach.

POOL AREA - the pool area is nice, very new loungers which made for very comfortable afternoons, there are lots of spots with shade which is great. Since the resort doesn't offer a swim up bar they do have a server who will bring you drinks all day long. she was great and remember a little tip goes a long way to getting faster service.

ENTERTAINMENT - not good. that's all i'm going to say about that.

BAR - there are 2 bars, the beach bar is nice, top shelf liquor and great service. The bar that we enjoyed the most though was the Lounge Bar. Ruben was our bartender for 3 nights and he was fantastic.

SAFETY - the most important thing - before we left to go to Mexico, we were getting asked by friends where we were going, we got so sick of them telling us not to go that we stopped telling them. we LOVED Nuevo Vallarta, it was safe, there are LOTS of security guards on the resort, and the village feeling of the whole area made us feel comfortable the whole time.

SUMMARY - if you booked this resort then all I can say is that I'm jealous. I truly wish that i was there right now. If you're thinking of booking this resort then stop thinking and just do it. The value is there right now, with the renovations the price is better than you will ever find. It will only go up from here.

Thanks so much

Victor

p.s. it is a timeshare resort, they do hang out by the elevators, just say no, or if you look young enough, tell them you're 25 (can't do a presentation if you're under 28).

Room Tip: REQUEST A GROUND FLOOR! We had room 116, perfect, right in the middle looking at the pools.

My husband and I just returned from a one week holiday at the Occidental Grand and loved it. The resort is rated as a five star but we feel a 4 or 4 1/2 is more appropriate for following reasons: only two a la carte restaurants, lack of good entertainment, no pool bar or infinity pool. The hotel rooms were large and beautiful with comfortable beds. Staff were very helpful and all front line staff spoke english well. The food was very good with lots of vegetable and fruit choices. The food was not hot even though it was on heated tables. Not sure why they could not have piping hot food. We loved the easy access to everything in the hotel - not spread out over several acres!
Wishlist: wish there was a piano bar or lounge with background music where one could talk with others easily. Most nights enetertainment staff bombarded everyone with bingo or loud music and there really was no other place to congregate to get away from the noise. We were there for one week and Mamma Mia was on twice! This being said, we enjoyed our stay and would go back IF THE PRICE IS THE SAME.. Hopefully they will have found a way to address our concerns as they have been expressed by others. We were hoping for a survey to complete so we could voice our opinion. We feel that if they do not address these issues, they will not be as successful as they could be. Beautiful spot with so much potentiall!!!!

Room Tip: ask for room facing water.

After reading all the glowing reviews I thought this place must be spectacular so I booked with a friend. There are good things about the hotel. The most impressive was the beverage service. The lobby and beach bar provided excellent service with a fine variety of top shelf liquors. The beer on tap is Corona. The beach bar was an excellent place to socialize and watch the sun go down. The front desk service at check in was fast and efficient. As previously mentioned there are no balconies and you will likely miss them even if you intially think you won't. I know we did. The rooms are small but well appointed, again the lack of balconey makes them feel smaller. The resort was clean, maid service was adequate. The food was surprisingly below average. My satisfaction criteria for an average four star all inclusive buffet is one carved meat per dinner service. In one week they carved a turkey one night and leg of veal on another. Didn't meet the criteria. The food was otherwise ok. Nothing to make you desparate for seconds. The service in the buffet was slow. Breakfast was the best meal. Good omelets and they always had bacon. No selection of cold meats for lunch which is a lunch buffet basic. The Italian restaurant had excellent food, but be prepared for a ninety minute dinner. The snack bar on the beach was quite good for lunch and later night snacks, but again slow service for lunch. The beach was awesome. It was dark sand not the white that you get in Cancun but wide and long and great for walks. Quite a beatiful view. The resort has a medical clinic and hospital across the street if something goes wrong. Apparently it is quite clean efficient and professional as we met someone who had need of their services. All this being said we had a great time. Nothing was awful. We found the resort friendly. You wouldn't make a mistake going here, but I wouldn't expect a five star level of satisfaction. A decent average resort that you should be able to get for a good price. If you paid book value you would be unhappy.

Room Tip: Try to get a first floor patio room. If you are willing to pack up and move from the first room they...

Dear DavidKToronto,

We welcome your valuable feedback regarding your stay.

It is very important to us that you enjoyed your holidays and our resort´s services.

Thank you for your excellent feedback about our employees and service, particularly at the bar and front desk. I will be sure to share your compliments with them. Also, I am happy to hear that you enjoyed our beverage selection; we pride ourselves on the top quality and variety we provide.

In regards to the slow service at Le Buffet and the snack bar, we have made some changes to our operations in order to make them faster and we have added a pasta station in order to provide more options. We also offer a different theme every meal, like Caribbean night and the Oriental night.

We do not have balconies. However, the windows in the rooms open wide and you can see the beautiful sunset from many of them. We also have beautiful open areas where guests can enjoy the outdoors, see the wonderful sun set and feel the ocean breeze, such as the secluded palapas by the pool.

Thank you for staying with us and we hope to see you again soon!
