I went to this hotel maybe 8-9 years ago and just returned with my partner to spend a week. We had the best time. We wanted to rest and relax and it was the perfect place for it. Joanne and Paul, the owners, could not be nicer. The rooms are very clean. The staff is also very friendly and we felt right at home. We had dinner a few times in the restaurant and it was always delicious. The location of the hotel is perfect, just half a block from Marinero beach where you can swim (beware of the waves which cam be pretty strong even if much less than on Zicatela beach). The pool and hamacs on the roof deck were a real treat when it got too hot at the beach. We are hoping to go back soon!

The only thing preventing an excellent review of this hotel is its location. Flor de Maria is a lovely small colonial style hotel, a half block off the town beach at Puerto Escondido. Unfortunately the hotel's location, and the centre of P.E. itself, has deteriorated in the years since the hotel was built.
The hotel is lovely, spotless, with a center courtyard, lush plants, hand painted doors, and a great roof top deck with a bar and small dipping pool, and a great view of the ocean. Rates are reasonable. The restaurant is one of the best in P.E., under the culinary genius of chef Joanne. Joanne and her partner Paul are the best hosts, making sure their guests are happy with everything. Our good-size room on the second floor had a peek-a-boo view to the beach and a tiny Juliette balcony. Some less expensive rooms have no outside windows, and look on to the corridor and courtyard. There was an overhead fan and a floor fan, and when our floor fan did not work well, Paul immediately swapped it for a better one, with apologies. The area is quiet at night, no bar noise. The beach at the end of the road is safe for swimming, and the surfers' (and partiers') beach, Zicatela, is a 10 minute walk east around a point.
The area around the hotel has many empty derelict lots with garbage in them. Our view, besides the peek-a-boo ocean view, included an empty lot with a graffiti covered wall, some garbage, and a couple of broken toilet bowls. The beach area at the end of the road, called Playa Marinero, is not very appealing: The only beach restaurant on this road was closed and abandoned looking, and an empty, littered camping spot/hostal was across the street from the closed restaurant. There is no shade on the wide beach there, but some times some one sets up some beach chairs and umbrellas for a charge. The nearby main beach front town area of P.E., called Playa Principal, is run down, swampy, and dirty. There are some lovely places a short taxi ride away, like Playa Angelito and Manzanilla.
The hotel owners obviously have no control over the area around them, and I hesitate to taint Flor de Maria with it. But the purpose of a review is to let people know what they will be getting, and in my opinion, the area the hotel is in really detracts from it.

Hotel Flor de Maria is a small two storey hacienda (internal courtyard) style hotel located 1/2 block from the beach on a small side street (no roads to cross to get to the beach). It is a short walk along the beach to the centre of town. Joanne and Paul and the rest of the staff are amazing. They are friendly and helpful and quickly make you feel very welcome. We met several people that stay there for weeks at a time. At times it, almost seemed like the P.E. equivalent of the 'Exotic Marigold Hotel'. There is an on-site restaurant where breakfasts and dinner are available. The menu is varied and delicious. Joanne and her staff are wonderful cooks, so we ate several meals there. The beach closest to the hotel is a nice swimmers beach, the very long beach a few steps past the nearby walkable point (the Zicatela) has larger waves and is loved by the surfers. It is wonderful for walking and watching the surfers do their best to conquer the waves. There are a number of other good restaurants close by, including a small one across the lane from the hotel. The roof top terrace is a delight during the day if you have had enough sun, to watch the sunset, take a cooling dip in the pool or to have a drink while you read, talk, play cards etc. We would love to stay there again when we return to Puerto Escondido.

My favorite thing about this hotel was the roof, where we could order a drink, watch the sunset, chill in a hammock, etc. It was breezy and has a great view of the harbor. It's centrally located so you can walk to either of the shopping/eating areas in PE, and you can easily walk to the beach. The rooms were pretty basic - don't expect luxury mattresses or fancy bathrooms - but functional. And you don't come to a beach town to sit in your room! The owners are friendly and speak several languages. They were very helpful in pointing us in the direction of good surfing, swimming, eating, etc. Wifi was good, as was breakfast!

Lovely spot! 50 yards from Playa Principal. Roof top Terraza with pool is spectacular. Rooms are spacious and clean. Paul and Joanne are very warm and welcoming, remembering your name. Paninis on the rooftop are delicious!
