Quite by chance I noticed the lighthouse on our map...and because I love lighthouses, I had to find it. We parked the car in a small area by the gate that said '2.6k to the lighthouse'
It was a perfect day. All sunny and clear. The walk was easy, and soon I could see the top of the lighthouse in the distance. As I got closer, it became a quest....must reach the lighthouse!
The path climbed a little up to a dry stone wall (I wondered why there was such an impressive wall) and a gate. Eventually I was sitting on a rock gazing down at deep blue sea and the lighthouse.....gorgeous painted stripes against a beautiful blue sky.
There was a real feeling of absolute peace here. It's hard to imagine the coast ever being a threat to shipping on a day like that.

This is accessed by driving across the island down a narrow road to a small parking area from which a clear path leads 2.6 k. The path starts on tar but quickly becomes a rough track and some 400 or metres from the lighthouse becomes a narrow path.

This was a pleasant easy walk with tantalising glimpses of the lighthouse at various points. We got to within a couple of hundred metres of the lighthouse but then the wind got up and rain started so we made our way back.

A few parking spaces indicate the start of this 5km (rnd) stroll, at the end of the island road. Mostly track underfoot, with lots of sheep! Good views and lots of birds. Take a packed lunch and have a picnic in or around the lighthouse.

If you have the time you should combine your visit to the lighthouse with a trek on the Heritage Trail. We did a lot of lazing about and it took us about 6 hours to walk the 8 or so miles which included a couple on the road.

Views are truly outstanding for modest effort. Underfoot it feels like a mountain walk and can be rough on the Heritage Trail but the high point is only 104 mtrs so it is hardly Munro bagging. If you just want to walk to the light and back it could be done on good tracks in 2 hours.

Well worth the trek from Scalpay out to Eilean Glas lighthouse. We took the easy path on the outward leg and the more challenging coastal path on the return leg - encountering some pretty steep climbs and boggy areas end route. The lighthouse itself stood proud against the clear blue sky and deep turquoise sea. Here's hoping the local fundraising effort raises enough to renovate the site.
