My husband and I chose Tulum for our honeymoon and we split our stay between the beach area and the town of Tulum. We chose Ahau Tulum for our beach stay based on their great reviews and I loved the eco-friendly vibe the place seems to have. The price for staying at Ahau Tulum also seems to be comparable to other hotels in the area.

Upon arrival, my husband and I were each given welcome drinks and we grabbed some lunch in the hotel’s beachfront restaurant while waiting for our rooms to be ready. The food was good and the simple, relaxed vibe of the place was a great way to kick off our vacation! We were given room 16, which is on the 2nd floor of one of the buildings closer to the main building (which has the reception & restaurant area). The room had a soft and comfortable king-sized bed and a wonderful balcony with a hammock and a great ocean view. My husband and I spent a huge chunk of our time at Ahau relaxing in our balcony. It was the perfect spot to read a book, take a nap and to get some morning sun. The room also had a small safe (for keeping our valuables), a jug of fresh drinking water, and complementary toiletries provided included aloe vera gel (which my husband needed after getting sunburned on our 2nd day) and a mosquito repellant spray (which was very handy to have in the evening while walking around the area). The room also has air-conditioning which was turned on in the evening. You don’t really need it though as there is always a nice ocean breeze circulating in the room from the room’s many windows, but it was nice to have since it can feel damp and humid in the evening.

WiFi is really best in the hotel lobby and restaurant area, but we were able to access a bit of it from our room based on our building’s proximity to the main building. The hotel also provided daybeds, hammocks, beach chairs and umbrellas on the beach for their guests and my husband and I thoroughly enjoyed napping on the beach daybeds in the afternoon. The daybeds can fill up quickly during the day, but really, who cares if you have to plop down a towel in the sand when you’re on vacation in paradise? My husband and I also signed up for one of the yoga classes the hotel offers in the morning and that was wonderful as well. The yoga class took place in an area above their restaurant with tall windows facing the beach. The yoga instructor was great. This was my husband’s second time in a yoga class and I’ve taken quite a few, but we were able to modify the moves to each of our comfort and challenge level. There was also a person who was playing the harp during our yoga class – which was a great addition!

Everyone who worked at the hotel were friendly and helpful, and we thoroughly enjoyed our stay! It was great to have a few days to fall asleep to the sound of the ocean waves, relax under the sun, walk along the beautiful beach and explore nearby restaurants (Hartwood, Casa Jaguar, Gitano, and many other options are only a 5-10 minute walk away).

A couple of minor nits that didn’t really bother me, but some of you may be interested in hearing about. The water in the shower either took a while to warm up or simply never did– which is fine since the cool water felt good after a day in the sun. You can check out beach towels from the reception desk with towel tickets, but it wasn’t properly explained to us that you needed to return the towels back to the reception desk in order to receive another towel ticket for use in checking out a beach towel for the following day. If you want to book a spa service, you have to let the reception desk know a few hours in advanced as while there is an area set aside for spa services, there is no on-site spa staff.

Overall, would absolutely recommend this place to friends and family! We hope to come back again in the next few years. It sounds cliché, but it truly was a memorable, magical stay.

Room Tip: Rooms closer to the restaurant and reception area have the best wifi access.

We are so grateful for the most amazing, personal service during our stay at both Ahau and Alaya (sister property). The food at Ahau is among the best in all of Tulum, Marco, Paulina and Rolando made sure that we were completely satisfied with every aspect of our visit. All I can say is be sure that you ask for exactly what you expect - whether it's complete privacy or if you have kids so that you are in the best possible suite. We had the Master Suite which was lovely but since it was a holiday week and we wanted seclusion and quiet we moved a few minutes down the road to Alaya (just opened). Magical describes our experience best.

Without a doubt the best designed slice of paradise in Tulum. Beach, restaurant, accommodations, service - everything is truly stellar offering the quintessential Tulum experience home base. We stay there when we can and would happily recommend it to anyone with higher standards.

My boyfriend and I stayed at Ahau for 5 days and we were in absolute heaven. I was a little unsure as I had contacted the hotel a few times prior to my stay and didn't get the quickest responses, but it is simply because of the relaxed, go-with-the-flow mentality there. I am a bit of a control freak and like to triple confirm everything, but as soon as I arrived I easily relaxed. We were greeted with mimosas and given a ton of information about the hotel and area. The staff manager was even nice enough to walk us down the street to show us his restaurant recommendations. Everyone we spoke with in terms of staff was extremely helpful and friendly.

The restaurant on site had a great selection for all meals, including an awesome fruit juice selection. The beach daybeds were also really comfortable - tip though to secure one earlier in the day if you would like an umbrella. There are definitely enough and it's not like a huge resort where you have to secure a spot, but if you want an umbrella you may have to get one earlier.

We did the AM yoga on our last day and it was amazing, the instructor was so knowledgeable and we did some stretches I have never done before. We also rented bikes and did snorkeling through the hotel, both which were easy and very fun.

I recommend this place wholeheartedly!

Ahau Tulum was a bit of a curate's egg for us. Parts of it really were excellent and other parts were disappointing; it may be that we were just unlucky. Leaving aside the astronomical prices which to be fair is an inherent part of staying in Tulum hotel zone, I'll start with the downs. To start with, prior to arriving we had decided to extend our stay in Tulum because people had raved about it before our trip. Ahau Tulum was recommended by a friend who had stayed next door at Uno. We had originally booked three nights and then asked to extend our stay one extra night but the email response time was not very swift and we booked the extra night online. On arrival we were told that we could not keep the same room because of the scheduling of guests and we would have to move the extra night. It was inconvenient but could understand the reason. Except, the night we moved, noone moved into our first room and there was absolutely no reason for us to have had to move rooms. It was frustratingly unnecessary. We chose to stay in a Bali Hut. The photos were rather deceptive on size and they were small perhaps extending about 2 feet beyond the parameter of the bed. If you are staying in one of the master suites overlooking the sea, this is obviously not a problem, those rooms appeared to be massive! But, we felt the distribution of size was a little strange given how small our room was and how the master suites were unlikely to need a full blown dining table set in the front patio (as they have no kitchen, so you wouldn't be eating there). Another comment particular to the Bali Huts were that they had no proper curtains or blinds, only light white netting which meant that from the outside you could see into the room, as we were on the ground level. Not great for personal modesty or waking up past sunrise at circa 6am. We asked about some thicker curtains and were told noone else had ever complained. We found this surprising, but nevertheless it took over 24 hours for mexican blankets to be arranged so they would cover the windows. And when we moved rooms they did not think to transfer them with us, so we had to use the towels and beach towels. The yoga mats in the studio are clearly worn. Worryingly, despite being designed as an ecological resort focussing on the harmony between humans and mother earth, there were a disturbing amount of coral decorating the common areas, with one freshly killed piece of coral being brought in during our stay. Given the global concern about how severely endangered coral is, it was a real shock to see it being used as ornamentation. Finally, we were given absolutely no substantive briefing of the hotel. We weren't told that we were entitled to beach towels until the following day when we spoke to a new receptionist. We weren't told that we could order drinks on the beach to charge to our rooms. It felt like we were the customers who had just been missed.
But there were pluses. The restaurant, thought expensive, was really good. The food was tasty and well prepared. They have a waiter prepare a salsa to your taste at your table with a pestle and mortar, which is lovely gastronomic entertainment. The reception staff are very friendly and welcoming. We received a conscientious aftercare email when we left. They very kindly allowed me to use the yoga studio to self-practice when no class was on. The studio is really wonderful, above the restaurant but with wide open windows overlooking the sea. The bathrooms to the bali huts are only shared between two rooms so it's was not overused. The beach loungers were excellent and comfortable with an umbrella for the majority of them; it made it easy to spend the day just lying on the beach. And the beach was gorgeous. The bed mattress (in the bali hut) is soft. Perfect for me, not so much for my partner. On our last night they had a great mariachi band playing and appeared to have something different happening each night.
All in all, I could not say I loved Ahau or that I would come back for sure, but it had some very strong positive points.

Hello!

We want to thank you for the nice comments about Ahau. We would like to apologize about the bad experience you had with the sheers in the Bali Hut as they are designed to give you privacy from outside because the windows are small and only if you get very close this someone could see inside, anyhow, we are in the process to change them to offer more privacy. About the difference between a Bali Hut and a Master suite is off course in size and also in price as the Bali Hut is 90 USD plus taxes and a Master Suite goes to 500 USD plus tax per night and that the Master Suite has its own bathroom and an inside and outside shower, a huge King size bed, a porch with a day bed, a hammock, two chairs and an 8 people dinner table for the use of families and friends as we have room service and there is where you can have any of your daily meals. The size of the rooms are specified in our web page in square feet/meters and also we have there a layout drawings in 3D to know the space you will have in any of each rooms. Bali Huts are the most wanted rooms in our hotel and they are booked all year around, it is a possibility that the guest arriving to your room did not showed up as we would not move a guest if there would be no check in in that room, no case to do this, however, we apologize for the disturbance of moving you to another room as planned. We understand your concern about the corals and we feel that we need to explain that in this area coral leaves as the ones that you saw as well as the seashells and more ocean life dies in there and lands in our beach, all around the area this are ornaments and most of the people like it, there is not a chance we will kill the coral or coral leaves to decorate our hotel, we have only some few ones in the reception and in the garden and are the ones that landed already dead on our beach, unfortunately, we cannot re plant them or do anything to save them but we work very hard to preserve the coral reef and our surroundings. About the yoga mats, we already bought new ones as they get worn easily fast due to the high traffic of yoga users. We thank you again for all the pluses you mentioned in your review and hopefully you decide to come and visit us again and give us the opportunity to do it better on your next vacations.

Warm Regards,

Arturo Soto
