Jardin de Frida is undoubtedly a really cool hostel: the decor and murals are amazing and really unique, we really enjoyed just taking them all in and looking around the reception area in particular to take it all the details.

Our private room was very large and had the nice addition of a hammock inside which was very relaxing. It also had its own bathroom although this wasn't clean when we arrived and seemed to be cleaned only intermittently throughout our week there. Also the towels weren't changed at all which I guess is very 'hostel' but for £40 a night I'd expect a bit more.

Unfortunately on the first night we were there, a tropical storm meant that we had no power in our room, which also knocked out any water. Having gone down to the reception hoping for some help with this issue, all we really got was a shrug of the shoulders and to be told it was 'the storm'. It took us talking about moving somewhere else for the receptionist to look to see if other rooms were available that had water (they did not). Eventually, someone came to fix the water (amazingly, the storm was somehow vanquished by a man apparently hitting a pipe with a hammer) and so we could stay there.

The service we received from the reception staff was similar throughout the week: not very helpful and usually more interested in whatever they were doing on the computer than whatever you needed.

Other reviewers have mentioned the breakfast being small: we didn't find that it was but it was puzzling why we were only offered one meal from the restaurant's menu and couldn't swap it for another of the same value.

It's a cool place to stay but don't go expecting great service. Seems to have fallen into the same trap as much of Tulum and have become a victim of its own hipster status.

Hi. We're really glad that you appreciated the decoration of our place.

We're really sorry about the storm and the fact that you didn't have water for a while. But it is not as easy as you make it sound. When the electricity goes out the hydro system loses pressure and water can go out after a while. It was late at night so the maintenance staff was not in place at the moment. He had to go up to the roof to turn on our reserve backup system in the middle of the storm with almost hurricane-strength winds. So that's why it took some time to get it fixed.

You need to have consideration towards the fact that when you are in a small town in the middle of the jungle during a storm this kind of things will happen and we need to respond to them while also considering the safety of our staff.

Regarding the breakfast it is clearly stated when you book that the option included is the continental option. If you want to know why you can't change it to other options now is because the restaurant prepares its production to be able to serve efficiently all guests and the production is based on the breakfast we clearly state we provide when you book.

Regarding the bathroom. I apologize for that. We clean the bathrooms everyday and thoroughly before a check in so if you found out it was not up to standards or there was something dirty in it you should've let us know and we could've fixed that immediately.

Our staff is always there to help and you can see from other reviews that they always provide guests with a great service. Obviously there will be moments when they might be busy answering an email or making a reservation in the computer but I can guarantee if you ask for something the staff will be more than happy to take the time to help you with any request.

We are always striving to provide a great service and stay to all guests and we appreciate your comments. We will always work to improve on all the things that made some guests not too happy with their stay, so thank you.

Cheers.

The hostel has a nice bright exterior. Lots of interesting decor to catch your eye. Music playing with a nice chilled out theme. We stayed 2 nights in the Friday kahlo suite. It had a double bed, a sofa bed, kitchen area, private bathroom and even a room with a hammock in.
The room also has AC and a fan.

They offer a complementary breakfast too, which consists of bread and a crepe with jams and a coffee. Their was some confusion with the cook as she charged us for breakfast (she seemed to think we'd come off the street) even after showing her our room key. Nevertheless it was all sorted once we spoke to someone in reception.

My girlfriend and I stayed for 2 nights in a dorm with AC in this hostel and we loved it. The place looks really amazing and the whole stuff was really helpful (did free phonecalls for us, had good advice for bike-rental, etc.). We also used the good equipped kitchen and had nothing to complain about. Thanks for the great stay!

We stayed at El Jardin de Frida for 6 nights and had an amazing experience. Very friendly and helpful staff, beautiful rooms and garden, clean and tidy, yummy bread and crepe with amazing self made Marmelade included for breakfast. All in all we really, really enjoyed our stay there and would definitely recommend! But you should rent a bike to get around and to the beach, since it's quite far (~7km) from there.

I organized a cultural/linguistic trip for 8 kids (12 year olds) which included daily lessons at a nearby school. Jardin de Frida was excellent for our purposes. Very quaint, with lovely common rooms both inside and outside, as well as rooms with private baths and air conditioning. A dorm with 5 beds for the boys, a suite for 3 girls. The other mom and I shared a suite and found the beds comfortable. Delicious breakfast with crepes, home made bread and jam is included. Well located, walking distance from school as well as many, many restaurants. My only misgiving is that on Saturday night there was very loud music from somewhere nearby that played until 4am. The other nights were quieter, but you sometimes hear dogs barking or trucks driving by. Apart from this, excellent value for your money. I would highly recommend for those on a budget!
