Arriving at Grand Coco Bay feels like coming "home", and one of the most welcoming aspects is that the staff are the same great people each year . . . how wonderful to see Zoila and Victor in the reception again, and to go for our first breakfast to find Adelmira, Orbelín, Carolina, Gabriela and Veronica again! I don't know whose smiles were bigger, theirs or ours! We were a group of ten people, seven from Atlantic Canada and three from Alberta (transplanted Maritimers) and seven of us have been to GCB before and liked it so much that we have returned for the past three years.
Mother Nature and the winds and waters have not been kind this past year to the beachfront at Grand Coco Bay and while the sand remains as white and soft, the beach depth in front of the resort itself has largely eroded. Walk north a few hundred yards and it is as it was, and the same as you walk toward the pier to the south.
Most of us were on the first and second floors with rooms facing the lovely clean pool. One of us had a fourth floor room with all NEW furniture, draperies and amenities so it seems as if some renovation is underway. This is a good sign as some of the decor and furnishings are showing typical wear and tear. Everything worked except one patio door lock, and that was attended to promptly.
When you get an excellent price for a resort like GCB, it isn't essential to have filet mignon and creme brulee every night. If dinner selections didn't suit us, we simply went into Playa itself to dine. The variety and freshness of the food at the resort is very good, and breakfasts especially are delicious. Above all, it is the service that is stellar.
Make sure to attend the dinners that are held in the theatre, in particular, the Mayan dance and drumming . . . real spectacle. The food on that occasion is truly Mexican with steaming stone cauldrons of cochinita pibíl and sopa azteca . . . amazing!
Big smiles for Bety(Elena!), Jessyka and Carlos from the animation staff. Friendly and not persistent if we preferred reading to volleyball.
Staff at the Ya'ax Spa are also very professional and talented - ask for Bety or Karla!
As return guests we arrived to chilled buckets of champagne and other gifts, and lovely welcomes from Karina and Arturo in Guest Services.
Abelardo and Baudelio at the pool bar are so busy yet always have time for a smile and a chat, as do Luis and Carlos in the lobby. Even the house wines seemed improved this year, though we did buy some of our own, too.
The LOCATION of this smaller resort is one of its biggest positives; it is a short walk by street or by beach to the downtown and 5th Avenue for shopping, dining and people watching. A cab is only 50 pesos if you have tired feet!
To the management of Grand Coco Bay, keep doing what you are doing and making some of the cosmetic improvements to the rooms . . . the new furnishings in the lobby are very chic and stylish!
We will see you next year!!!

Room Tip: Ask for first or second floor facing the pool . . .

Grand Coco Bay resort was such a nice surprise for us, we had not expected much for the amont of money we spent and could not have been happier. The whole week experience was wonderful. The beach is beautiful, white sand with no rocks, we did'nt need our water shoes, you can walk and walk in either direction of the resort with no problem, nice wide beach both ways. The staff was always eager to please, and any problem was taken care of immediately. The food is your basic resort food, the cocktails were always cold and plentiful. We will definatley recommend this resort to our friends who want to travel on a budget.

Room Tip: ask for a room close to the beach.

The hotel was quite adequate. This is the best you can say. We had a great trip, thanks to some great folks we met and time we spent off resort. Resort is 3.5 star so I guess 'ok' is what they strive toward. First the good stuff - the pool bar and lobby bar tenders are great. Most of the waitstaff is also excellent. Could be improved - they water down everything and I mean everything; the orange juice, the liquor, etc. if its liquid and you didn't open it, assume its watered down. That includes the cheese sauce and chilli at the snack bar. Housekeeping left none or too few towels 4 of 7 days. Daily tipping didn't help. Pool and lobby area clean, but room hallways dirty! Food is average, nothing special, but very eatible.

Room Tip: Rooms on 3rd floor on same side as restaurants are a little quieter, at least it seemed that way.
