We loved staying at Viva Maya. We were originally scheduled to stay at Azteca but due to COVID they moved us. We adored everything about Maya. The show every night was fantastic! The service was great! Food and drinks were delicious. Room was nice and spacious, even the bathroom was impressive. The resort itself feels very remote which I liked, much different than other places I’ve stayed in Mexico. Will go back to this resort and currently looking at other Viva resorts for DR trip later this year.

We stayed at Viva Wyndham Maya from Jan 4-10, and it has been one of the best stays we have had in Playa del Carmen. Our Party planner Irene Canseco did an Amazing job coordinating everything with her assistant John. And the rest of the team waiters, cleaning service, animation teams were also a pleasure to be around and work with.... I want to give a special shout out to Gabriel and Hugo, they had the best customer service I have ever encountered!!! Mexico is one of the country’s that really knows what customer service is! ❤️ The beach was beautiful and clean, the weather when we went was hot during the day and chilly at night so bring a sweater. We loved the buffet food for everyone with different options. My only complaint was the pillows, mattress and ac... AC was not adjustable you had to turn off if not you would freeze. But I bet it’s perfect in the summer. Pillows to my taste were to high and mattress a little hard. But other then that this is a beautiful place with a reasonable price! You will not regret it!! Thank you Viva Wyndham for having a team that knows what customer service is all about!!!

The place has a nice beach and was a good trip..Food was ok and the workers worked very hard ---when you see that all these sailboats ad paddleboards and surf boards are free --think again---yes they are free but the guy who works there will do his best to make sure you can never use anything...I watched him for 7 days and everyone was told that they should come back in the the afternoon and nothing ever went out to be used--there is always an excuse as to why you cant use the sailboat but three of them set there all day---everyone eventually never comes back enough to ever use these boats alter---he always says they are rented but none ever move...then if a drop of rain comes he has an excuse to abandone the whole process---In 7 days at 9 am I neever saw anyoen get to use the three sailboats that just sit there --

Room tip: rooms are ok but every sound is magnified all night

1 Star because of the Staff - It feels like they genuinely LOVE their job and they make the place. They do their best with what they have.

Cons:
We knew going cheaper would mean to expect less - minimal brand name liquors, nothing super fancy, but what we didn't expect was the following:
- Completely undrinkable wine: I read this in a review but thought someone just just being picky. Nope! We tried the "rose", white and red and NONE are drinkable.
- 2+ hours to check in upon arrival.
- FOOD is marginally edible. You can eat it, kind of, but you won't enjoy it. The Italian restaurant and the buffet are horrible. The Mediterranean restaurant (which is more of a seafood/pasta restaurant) was the best food we had on the resort.
- We survived a lot on pre-packaged yogurts and the "snack bar" which is a buffet of boiled hot dogs, french fries and burgers (they also have pizza and chicken wings which we didnt try)
- Room issues on day 1: Upon arrival we had to call the front desk about the toilet not flushing, room safe not working and TV remote not working.
- Toilet: They came to "fix" it.... they messed around with it and left. We had to call them 2 times during our stay to unclog it. We eventually figured out that you have to HOLD down the handle until everything goes down.
- Safe: Next got fixed but they didn't have any issues refunding us for it. $2/day
- Remote: I believe the salt air corrodes the batteries. The remote continued to malfunction but we eventually figured out that if you take the batteries out and rub the two negative sides together and replace them, it will work!
- Margaritas: DON'T DO IT! It's Mexico the margaritas should be great, right? WRONG - we took one sip and put them down, we also witnessed others doing the same (along with the wine)
- Hot Tub: More like 3 degrees above the cold pool tub.
- Towels: Need to be updated, they are loosing color and raggedy.
- Bed: OMG for the love of *insert deity here* UPDATE THE BEDs. It's like sleeping on a concrete floor. We woke up with sore necks and backs. Oh - There aren't additional blankets provided and they only provide 2 tiny pillows per bed.
- The rooms smell old and musty. Rust on interior doors.
- THE TRACTOR that would pass by our balcony EVERY MORNING at 6-630am and again at 7-730.
- Last but not least: They put the wrong person in our pre-paid airport transfer and made us late for our flight. Our pickup was scheduled for 8am, at 815am I contacted the agency and asked where the driver was. They said the drive claimed to have picked us up... the hotel staff had put another guest in our van. Thankfully the transfer company paid for our taxi to the airport so we just made our flight.

Pros:
- The beach is clean and beautiful!
- Beach chairs are relatively comfortable.
- Cocktail options are MANY but many kind of taste the same, but still decent. Mojitos are good.
- The wild life and the grounds are pretty well kept.

We spent two memorable weeks at Christmas time. We booked All-Inclusive with Sunwing.
The flight, transfer, etc was smooth and easy. Because our stay was planned to be a bit longer than usual we booked Ocen View Room. When we arrived at the resort we were told that they could provide us only with "Partial" Ocen View. We had to take it. The room was a complete disappointment. The only view we had was the roofs of the Theater and Bar. Not even a "Partial" view. We went back to express our concerns about getting not what we have paid for. We were told to come back the next morning. We stayed many times in this resort and never had such issues. The resort was not full at all, but we had a hard time getting the room we wanted. The next morning we finally got a bit better-located room, but still "Partial" Ocean View. The rest everything was very nice. The service, the food, the beach. Excellent sports activities in the swimming pool with Alejandro. The buffet was great even better than before. The Italian Restaurant Portofino was amazing! Such a great menu, the steak, Tartare, cocktails. Every evening variety of Martini Cocktails was served under the night sky. Excellent coffee especially if you ask for "Forte"(strong espresso). All the staff was wearing masks and guests were require masks in a common area or before going inside a restaurant. It was safe but not overwhelming. Finally got relaxed and energized.
