Let me begin by saying I have vacationed in Cancun and Playa del Carmen area about a dozen times since 1995. I have always thought of it as a magical, natural paradise. Not so much anymore.

There are positives to Hotel Xcaret and many negatives in my opinion.

Let’s start with the negatives.:

- There is no wildlife at all. Not one iguana. In fact in 8 days I never saw one lizard. No coatimundi, no cute small rodents, no deer, no fish. Maybe a few birds. The place feels dead. I stayed at Occidental Destination Xcaret next door in May of this year and it was a natural paradise! What did they do with all the animals? And they intend on building many more adjoining resorts on the surrounding properties. Also building a huge stadium and mall. Bye bye nature. I go on vacation to escape civilization and Mexico used to be the best remedy.
- Noise! Incessant clanking, banging, chipping. Non-stop for 8 days!
- Elevators constantly breaking down.
- You cannot use the rooftop pool unless part of Fuego. That was never mentioned when I booked. Should be clearly stated.
- Dirty towels, napkins, utensils, glasses. My girlfriend was constantly given glasses with lipstick, utensils with crusted food. I used a “clean” bath towel that had a big spot of fresh human turd on it. Absolutely disgusting!
- Open bathroom concept. I hate these. I like to relax and watch TV while my girlfriend showers and gets ready. The sink is right behind the bed with no wall. So is the shower and a little toilet room. So you can hear the hair dryer, peeing, farting, showering. If you need to use the bathroom in the middle of the night or get up early to get ready for the gym you wake and disturb everyone! Just put a normal bathroom please!
- Food. About average for an all inclusive in Mexico. Maybe slightly above. I ate at the Japanese Teppanyaki. Choices were chicken, beef, shrimp and salmon. Where was the lobster you ask? Nowhere!! 8 days and not a whiff of lobster anywhere. I went to their famous Ha restaurant that is supposedly run by a top chef. What a joke. The main course was lion fish. An invasive fish that people catch and throw away. Was it seasoned special? Special delicious sauce? No! Just fried, grilled, whatever. Whole meal was a joke. I think that’s why they name it Ha. Because they laugh at you when you leave! Oh and they charge you for drinks. Even water is a charge! They only served bottles of wine, not by the glass. Cheapest was $50 for a cheap Argentinian wine worth about $8. When I complained they offered a couple of glasses from an already open bottle. $8 each. My girlfriend wanted to keep two cheap cloth coasters as souvenirs and was told no. We had to go to the buffet after to get some real food. I stayed at Riu Las Americas in Cancun last December and they had huge lobsters on the buffet certain nights. I stayed at Barcelo Maya in September and they had all you can eat lobster one night and delicious lobster at the Japanese Steakhouse.
- Montezuma’s Revenge. Like I mentioned in the beginning. I’ve been going to Mexico for 22 years. Only once I had stomach problems and a little Pepto Bismol cleared it up. And never when I stayed at an all inclusive. Three days into this trip I was vomiting and diarrhea worst in my life. I wanted it to run its course naturally but after two days and no improvement I called the hotel doctor. He gave me a shot in the butt a bunch of pills. Definitely helped but ruined at least 3 days of the vacation. Cost $290! $120 for the doctor and $170 for the shot and pills. I only ate at the resort, Xcaret and Xenotes. So it was from one of there properties. My girlfriend was completely fine. I would give it a pass but I can’t help thinking about the feces filled towel, dirty linen, utensils and glasses... I’m also going to have to go to the doctor here at home because my stomach is still bothering me.
- Construction. Still quite a bit going on. They are building some big pyramid looking thing. Looks impressive. The view from the top will be amazing. Maybe only for Fuego people?
- Elevators constantly advertising the parks becomes extremely repetitive and annoying. Even creepy.
- WiFi. Completely horrible. Extremely slow and would often disconnect and stop working. Speeds were around .25 - .50 Mbps. This is bad because all the photo packages you need to download will take forever! Speeds at Barcelo Maya and others were at least 8 Mbps.

Ok let’s go for the positives. The people who work there are all absolutely wonderful. Every single worker is friendly, polite and want you to be happy. When you arrive they say “Welcome home”. Very nice touch. I love the people. I always have.

The infinity pool is very nice and was heated. The beach areas were very nice, but watch for sharp pointy rocks. The grottos look like they will be nice once completed. The water was very murky and dirty the week I was there.

The gym was very nice. Everything feels new and doesn’t have that musty smell yet. All inclusive concept is great. If you use the parks it can be a good deal.

In conclusion, I got kind of turned off by the whole thing. This company is basically taking over the whole Riviera Maya. I’m afraid they are ruining what I adored about Mexico. Thousands of Xcaret/Xplore buses clogging the roads now. Just getting past Playa del Carmen on route 307 is clogged with traffic. But I can’t blame them. It gives people jobs. Maybe I’m just an older guy wishing for the simpler days, but I doubt I’ll go to this resort again.

Dear Dino13:

First and foremost, we would like to thank you for choosing Hotel Xcaret Mexico for your recent vacation. We strive to offer memorable experiences and our team works diligently to communicate our brand through thoughtful and warm service, therefore we regret to hear we were unable to fulfill your expectations.

From the planning of this property, we knew the importance of being a sustainable hotel that is friendly with the environment. It took 9 years of environmental research and studies to develop our Eco-Integrative Architecture, which responds to an integration of the environment respecting the existing vegetation and fauna.

Our program of relocation and reforestation of native vegetation led to 70% of the flora to be reforested within the site, of which 83% of the specimens survived. In regards to the species of the area, more than 45 specimens and 12 types of species were rescued and relocated.

Within the property, four bridges of arboreal fauna were developed in the project area for spider monkeys. The crossing structures allow to reconnect their habitat and facilitate their movement. In several protected areas of our hotel, you will find as well macaws that coexist peacefully in a natural environment.

Our commitment with this matter is so strong, that we even received the Earth Check certification in planning and design. As you can imagine, we were extremely disrupted as well by your comments on the hygiene incidents you describe, as very sctrict monthly audits take place in order to ensure our property provides only the highest levels of health and hygiene in our services.

It is with a heavy heart that I see we were unable to fulfill your expectations on this vacation, as plenty of our most emblematic assets were not pleasant for you, such as our All View Suites concept, that allows our guests to have a view of the nature in every part of their room. We understand privacy is important too and for that reason, we have a wooden door that allows you to separate the shower and WC from the main bedroom.

We appreciate the time you invested in sharing your valuable opinion and hope we have the opportunity to reintroduce you to our unique concept. We are convinced we have a wide variety of experiences for all members of the family and all type of travelers independently from their purpose of stay.

Best regards,

The view is simply stunning and the service is above excellent. The staff there really make you feel at home. The food presentation and flavour were exceptional. This package included admission to 8 different fun parks making this an amazing deal. Special mention to Guest services manager Stephanie Maldonado. We were upgraded for free to butler service so I must thank Heriberto our butler. Edwin, Monica and Martha from the lobby bar, pool concierge Francisco, and the two Juan’s at LaCantina. All of you helped make our trip even more memorable, we will never forget you.

This place is amazing! Went there Dec 7th-Dec 12th to celebrate a birthday. I notified them beforehand it was for a 40th birthday celebration and they definitely made it unforgettable. We were greeted by the very friendly and welcoming staff. Our room was beautiful and set up with champagne, cake and a beautiful bottle of mezcal. We had a butler named Juan who made our visit even 100 times better. The resort is breathtaking with beautiful views everywhere. The staff at all the restaurants, bars, pools & spa were great. Food was delicious with lots of variety as well. I highly recommend this place! We are already planning our next visit in July!

My wife and I were lucky enough to stay here during their Grand Opening. It was fantastic. The food was great, the hotel amenities were amazing, and the All Fun Inclusive put everything over the edge.

Here is a breakdown of the hotel and amenities

Food and Resturants
The buffet restaurants were smaller than I expected. The food was decent but there wasn't a large variety of food in any of them.

All of the Dinner Reservation restaurants were really good with delicious well plated

El Mercado, Xin Gao, La Cantina, and Ha and located below the lobby in order from left to right.

La Trajinera
-Buffet restaurant
-Located on the main infinity pool
-It has great views of the ocean
-The food is decent but not amazing
-It has a connected swim up bar.
-The outer windows can be retracted to allow the restaurant to be fully open.

El Mercardo
-Buffet with decent food and ice cream

Chibali
-Located by the kids pool and kids club
-Oriented more for kids but is a good option for breakfast. They make good omelets and crepes

La Cantina
-A Bar and Steakhouse with a Mexican twist
-I can't remember exactly what it was called but the octopus stuffed tortilla was really good.
-All the steaks we had were perfectly cooked.
-The fried bread was the best of the desserts we had.

Xin Goa
-This restaurant offers two options. You can either eat sitting at the Teppanyaki Grill or at a regular table. I recommend the regular table as it has a larger menu.
-I recommend the steak skewers as an appetizer.
-The Earth and Water sushi (I think that's what it's called) is my recommendation. Though it's not really sushi.
-If you look at the ceiling upside down it looks like a boat traveling to an island. Really neat

Teatro Del Rio
-This is the dinner theater restaurant.
-There are two dinners and shows. Carribean and Mexican themed.
-Both dinners are a pre-chosen 5-course meal.
-We went to the Carribean night. The food was great, the show... not so much. The main performer was really passionate, but to the point that it really distracted from the rest of the show.
-We did catch some of the Mexico show which was much better than the Caribbean show.
-Go here at least one of the nights

Ha
-This is an extra cost restaurant
-I think it's around $50 more per person.
-We sampled the food here during the Grand opening. It was really good but not enough for us to pay the additional night.

Las Playas (The snack bar)
-Located below the main infinity pool. We didn't find it until our last days there.
-The portions are large here.
-If I had it to do over I would have eaten most of our lunches here.
-They have the best guacamole of all of the restaurants.
-Caution- when they say the hamburger is huge and should be split between multiple people they aren't kidding. After ordering it we found out it was around 1.5 lbs of meat.

Las Cuevas
-This restaurant is built into the caves to the left of casa Fuego
-We were excited to eat here but found that it is reserved for larger parties.

Room Service
-Room service is offered 24/7
-We did not have a chance to order it during this trip

Mini Fridge
-The mini fridge is stocked daily with regular potato chips, m&ms, nuts, mexican candy, soda, water, and beer
-They told us we could customize it. But the only thing we were really able to get them to change was removing the beer and adding more soda. (We don't dink). We asked additional M&Ms but were only successful at getting more when they didn't stock any and we called down to the desk.

Buffets at the parks
-Most of the parks have buffets that are included as part of your stay and park attendance.

Room
-Your wristband acts as your door key.
-Every room has two hammocks on the balcony. One is out and the other is roled up.
-Lights can be turned on almost anywhere in the room. This is particularly nice to be able to turn off all the lights when you're in bed.
-The thermostat is also by the bed
-Most of the outlets have USB ports
-I believe each room has a jetted tub and 2 shower heads, one in the ceiling and a handheld on the wall.
-There are robes, slippers, umbrellas, iron, and a safe in the closet
-The toilet room has electrical fogged glass that will instantly fog when turned on but will remain clear when off. (It's neat but really unnecessary if you ask me)
-I wouldn't think the swimout rooms would be worth it unless you have kids and are by the kid pool or if you have a room on the river. The river rooms have platforms that you can jump off.
-I would recommend staying on the 5th floor. Everything seems to be connected to the 5th and 3rd floors. The 5th floor would give you a better view than the 3rd floor

Xcaret Parks
-The parks are amazing
-We went to Xel Ha, Xcaret, Xenses, and Xplor
-Our favorites were the rivers at Xplor and Xcaret. Xcaret has 4 rivers, The Blue, Red, and Yellow and one for a raft. The blue goes through caves and the Red and Yellow go through Mayan villages, an amphitheater, and other parts of the park.
-All the rivers end in the same location
-Be sure to ask whether the towels at the end are included or not. We were able to get them without a problem the first time down the river but had a problem the second time down.
-Be sure to sign up for the photo packages in advance and take as many pictures as you can. They have multiple places that you can scan your wrist band and get your picture taken. Many of these pictures would be impossible to get with a regular camera. Take pictures even if you're not sure if you'll get a package or not, just in case you change your mind.
-I was blown away by the extensive cave systems throughout Xplor, Xenses, and Xcaret. They would have been impressive to walk through without any of the other activities.
-Be sure to go to the show at Xcaret
-You can ride bikes to Xplor, Xenses, or Xcaret they are all really close to the hotel and have signs pointing you the direction you need to go. The bikes are located right next to the drop-off area.
-There is a bus that goes to Xplor, Xenses, and Xcaret every thirty minutes. The rest of the excursion transportation will need to be set up with the concierge.

Other
-I recommend setting up your schedule at the concierge desk the same day you get there. Including all parks and dinner reservations for all of your stay. It will probably take a little bit to sort everything out but will be worth it. Adjustments can always be made to it, but some restaurants may be booked if you wait too long.
-Take lots of pictures with the Xelfies around the resort.
-Transportation is included to and from the airport.
-The Spa seemed a little difficult to get to but looked nice
-The gym has an extensive amount of equipment.
-The kayak/SUP rentals are down past the Las Cuevas restaurant. You can only use them in the river running parallel to the ocean and only in specific areas. However, you can swim in the rivers by the buildings.
-I would recommend learning at least some basic spanish. There are a lot of people that speak English well and a lot that don't.
-This is the first of I think 7 new hotels. Everything within the immediate vicinity of the hotel is all finished but the more you venture out the more construction can be seen.

I'm sure there is a lot of information that I missed. Again, this was the best vacation I've ever had and wouldn't stay anywhere else if you're planning on going to more than one of the Xcaret parks.

Room tip: Either stay on floor 5 or have river access.
