We came to IM last year & my husband loved it so we ventured back again. I'm so glad we stayed at Hotel Secreto this time & we won't stay anywhere else again! We arrived at the hotel around 1330 & were greeted with welcome drinks. Our room wasn't ready so we hit the town for lunch. We had a room on the 3rd floor, wow what a view. A king size bed super comfy, flat screen tv, closet with safe, couch & 2 chairs & balcony with an outdoor mattress! A continental breakfast was served daily which consisted of fresh fruit, warm croissants, coffee & freshly squeezed orange juice. Jose was great & brought our tray out to the pool every morning. Although the hotel was full, there wasn't a soul around~we basically had the hotel to ourselves. Housekeeping was great with no shortage of supplies or towels. The staff was great & they were willing to do anything for you~special hellos & thanks to Rogelio, Omar, Jose & Victor!! Gracias por todo y hasta la proxima!!!!

We've traveled multiple times to Isla but first time at HS. Given that it was New Year's week, choices were limited but chose HS based on photos though I was concerned about some negative reviews. We stayed 5 days (min stay required due to holiday).

Pros:

Great location, quiet but close to Centro and nice views out of the balcony.
Boutique, private, modern decor, very comfortable beds
Small fridge, spacious rooms, hot showers - good pressure

Cons

Very musty smelling rooms (we checked two other rooms and all were very musty smelling)
Bathrooms are small and not much vanity room and dark
Furniture needs cleaning and/or replacement
There are only a couple of English TV channels
No restaurant on property
Housekeeping was not thorough

We were a bit disappointed with HS. The property could be exceptional with some changes as noted above. A few reasons for our concerns: At check in we were told we could only have a 3rd floor room because the 4th floor were already booked though we specifically requested 4th floor and provided our email correspondence to the Hotel regarding such. We moved on from the issue but when we got to the room - the mildew smell was horrific. I read a reviews regarding the musty smell of rooms but this was overwhelming! I ended up going to the Chedrauri in town and bought a scented candle it was so bad. They let us check out two other rooms which were equally stinky, so we simply stayed with ours. The furniture decor is modern as the website illustrates, but close up it is old and in need of a deep steam clean. We found a few employees to be quite nice and helpful but the main check in gentleman barely looked up from the computer when we came in the front door. We also reserved a golf cart through them via phone prior to arrival. When we arrived, they simply said sorry, there are none. We went into town to our usual golf rental and reserved it on our own within the hour. While we don't stay in the room much, my husband does like to catch up on news and there were only a couple of English speaking tv stations. We never ran into another guest or had a drink at the bar (not that kind of hotel) but that suited us fine. The bathroom was tiny with no space to lay out vanity items. The air conditioner is above the bed as one reviewer mentioned, but to the side wall and easily adjusted so not an issue.

In short, we would not choose HS again unless it fixed these issues - in particular, they need to rip out the carpets and fix the mildew as well as refurb the furniture. Additionally, some of the staff need additional training in service and follow through for guests. There are only 12 rooms, how difficult can it be. The lax attitude (of a couple of staff) was inconsistent with the resorts we normally stay in in Mexico. Needless to stay, we were relieved after 5 days at HS to head to our usual hotel for the rest of our vacation.

We spent a week at El Secreto and it has spoiled me for other hotels because the service was so amazing. There are only 12 rooms in the hotel, and every room has a wonderful view (although nothing beat the fourth floor balcony view). They provide a great continental breakfast that is delivered to your room upon your request, which included fresh fruit, croissants, strawberry preserves and a pot of coffee. The staff is incredibly helpful and friendly, and were willing to go WAY out of their way for us. We had made a mistake on our departure date and they took the effort to find another hotel room (as they were completely booked) right next door - all we had to do was show up and it was taken care of. They will arrange for golf carts, taxis, restaurant reservations, snorkel trips, or anything you need, and they are very flexible about allowing you to pay when you book a service, or pay when you are done. They have good food and drinks available during the day and will pick up to-go food if you are so inclined after their kitchen closes. The staff speak excellent English, but were very happy to converse in Spanish if you wanted. The hotel is very secure and the staff keeps a constant eye on the grounds, which are well maintained. The rooms are lovely with comfortable beds, a seating area, television, a table on your balcony, and robes, hair dryers, mini-fridges, safes, and even a bottle opener is provided. The rooms are QUIET - we never heard another person while we were in our room, and although the hotel was completely full, it felt like we had the place to ourselves. I have stayed at hotels all over the world and this one stands out as one of the best places that I have ever stayed. I will never go anywhere else on Isla Mujeres - although you need to book FAR in advance, as anyone who has stayed there before will be back.

Room tip: 2nd-4th floors (rooms 4-12) all have private balconies, while rooms 1-3 on the first floor are poolside with ocean views.

Really great here, pretty quiet part of season so not that busy in hotel, but lovely service, great lap pool, view overlooking beach from the pool.

You're a 3 minute walk from Playa Norte which is easily the best beach on the island. And 2 roads from Hidalgo, the main shopping and restaurant/bar street. We've been to 5 of the best rated places on the island food wise, and all but one have been in short walking distance. For the rest we just hired a buggy for 24 hours and did some exploring, hitting Mangos for breakfast, the sculptures at the bottom of the island, and also the dolphin swimming which was great fun.

We've been here only for 3 days now heading to Tulum but thoroughly recommended, only thing even slightly lacking was many other guests/bit of atmosphere which I imagine is completely different in full high season.

Great place and facilities....only 12 rooms but get a ground floor one as you can walk out straight to a daybed, and then 10m to the pool...
