We were on a cruise ship which docked at the International terminal and not closer to town. I wanted to try a local restaurant in town but decided the time we had was better spent trying a nearby restaurant; not a chain or pretend Mexican restaurant but something with a local taste and flair. Not too far from the terminal and just a short walk from the main street, we found this place. A couple of tables street-side, a few under cover and a lot more inside. We sat out on the street, close to the person making tacos and empanadas to order. The staff were very helpful, explaining the menu and taking their time with us. The place was very busy and when we saw the cruise ship staff eating there, we knew we were on to a good thing. The staff travel to Cozumel regularly and have tried many restaurants, so they know where to go and where the value is.

They had fresh fish on offer, either fried or in a soup. No doubt there were many other ways, you just had to ask and as you order, they scale and clean the fish for cooking; yes, it is that fresh. We were not that hungry and opted for some beef , shrimp and fish tacos; we also had some beef empanadas - all cooked to order and washed down with cold beers. Let me be clear, it was street food, not fine dining. The place and food was earthy but full of character, lovely people wiling to chat and we spent quite some time absorbing it all. It was sufficiently away from the hustle and bustle of the terminal shops etc to be quiet (there were 6 ships in port at the same time). It was a great experience, food was delicious and the visit made Cozumel for both of us, we just sat there, eating and drinking at leisure, never being hustled and we just ordered something else when we felt like it. The best bit was the bill, remarkable value and it reflected the place, not a tourist trap but honest, freshly prepared and cooked food. Lunch with beer for 2 was less than the price of 2 cruise ship cocktails.
