Hotel Parador Margarita
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed 15 August 2017

Hotel Parador Margarita is situated just 2 blocks from Real de Guadalupe and 2 and a half blocks from the Zocalo, but as Guadalupe is pedestrianised and has so many distractions en route you might not make it all the way to the Zocalo if easily waylaid!

Set in a quiet back street the hotel doesn't have much street presence, but as with hotels of this style all the features are contained within. You enter through a courtyard with a small garden which is mainly a route through (unless staying in the rooms that line it). The main courtyard is just past the reception and small lounge area and is the feature of this hotel as it has a stunning view of the mountains in the distance above the creeper-covered end wall. The rooms around this garden are on 2 levels, the second level rooms being accessed via an open balcony around the 3 sides of the courtyard – the absence of the 4th side is the reason why you get such a good view beyond the hotel.

The décor of the rooms (especially a ceiling of dark wooden beams) can make them seem a bit gloomy at times but this is quite common in this style of hotel and as you are in San Cristobal don't expect wall-to-wall sunshine and just go with the flow! Anyway there are plenty of communal places to sit and take in the ambience and if you are lucky see humming birds! The room we stayed in managed to fit in so many items of furniture (a king-size bed, a dressing table, 2 bed-side tables, a table and 2 chairs plus a 2 seater settee!) but still felt spacious.

We found the hotel staff friendly and the reception staff especially helpful. My wife had been in the hotel for a week before I was due to join her and loved the room so much that she asked whether we could keep the same room for our joint 4 night stay (which had been made under a separate booking) and this was arranged with no problem at all.

We stayed in the hotel 4 nights. The location is good and safe and the the room is
clean.

The problem in the hotel is the staff, (which overcomes everything) and the way they treat their guests. First of all, none of the staff speaks English which made the communication very hard (although we speak a bit Spanish).
Second, the attitude was not very pleasant at all, especially by the waiters at breakfast who for some reason treat nicely only Mexican guest. It got even worst when on our last day we waited for 45 minutes to get a table at breakfast (which we paid for) which led us to leave without eating due to a scheduled trip.

At the reception, the staff are not that helpful and welcoming, plus they wanted to charge us 35$ (the rooms costs between 80-100 $) for 6 hours additional stay due to a late flight that we had. After we stayed 4 nights!!!!!!!

There are a lot of good places to stay at San Cristobal, do your self a favor and go somewhere else.

Room Tip: Rooms 18-17 is under the restaurant, ask for another room

The Parador Margarita is one of the loveliest hotels I have ever stayed at. Set off a narrow street in San Cristobal de Las Casas (itself a wonderful old Spanish city) and within a 5 minute walk of the pretty downtown area, one opens the door and sets foot in a pretty, open garden area. It is a perfect introduction to the hotel itself.

Our room was large, clean, comfortable and well appointed. All rooms face a central courtyard garden area with pleasing views of the forested hills surrounding the city. The complimentary breakfast was outstanding. Seating inside or on the balcony offered scenic views of the surrounding area.

We found the staff to be friendly and helpful and were especially impressed by their understanding when changing circumstances dictated that we leave San Cristobal a day earlier than we had planned. Although we could have been charged for the unused night as per our reservation agreement, the manager chose forgo payment. This was consideration and customer service of the highest order.

When travelling back to San Cristobal I would most definitely stay again at the Parador and highly recommend it to others.

Room Tip: The second floor offers great views of the courtyard and surrounding hill sides.

First, the good - the rooms were clean and new, the location is good, the room service was good.

The bad: We booked for 5 people through booking.com. When we arrived we were told that only two single rooms are available. They "cancelled" the online payment and made us pay extra for 3 persons on top (two were kids). The rooms were in fact double rooms with king beds, and 5 of us had to sleep on two beds. On top of that the first "cancelled" charge turned out not to be cancelled and was charged to my credit card. We talked with the owner of the hotel and showed her the charge. She refused to do anything about this, and insisted that the charge has been cancelled and that it will be cancelled - something which is not possible for a charge which is already marked as "completed". Even if by some miracle someone indeed decides to return these money with a new transaction, the exchange we had with the owner, although polite, was very far from what one would expect from someone who wants to preserve the hotel's reputation. On top of that the restaurant service for breakfast is truly terrible - the people who serve have absolutely no idea how to do it, were wondering around absent minded, we had to wait nearly 30 minutes to be served a simple breakfast, on a table which was full of used items and half-eaten things from the customers before us. These were not removed and the table was not cleaned at all.
In short - in this wonderful town this was an unpleasant experience and I would not recommend this hotel to anyone. I very rarely write bad reviews, but this one is totally deserved.
