We were so looking forward to dining at this place, the concept of serving traditional dishes with native organic corns is applaudable. However everything else about this place is downhill.

Why is it so bad?

- bad location: It’s a far walk from the zocalo. through some heavy traffic, we hoped the food would be worth the trek but it wasn’t.

- dirty establishment: bathrooms were gross and no paper. Sticky messy tables. Dirty dishes stacked high by where food was being cooked. The stuffing for all their food was kept outside in the heat all day long, covered with fabric but lots of flies all around.

- bad service: staff didn’t bother to say hi have a seat when we came in, never came with sauce they said they were getting, complained we didn’t have exact change.

- the food itself: Tasteless. Blandest retried beans in a memela. Overly salty slightly soured cheese in quesadilla. With 2 beers ( 2equis) total was 300 pesos - overpriced.

Maybe the worst service I had in Mexico. Very slow, mispalced order (same for a neighbouring table), and the food was not bad but definitely not the best.

The service here was terrible. The food for our table of 7 came out when it was cooked so some were completely finished before others got their meal. The intent of the place is honorable but the service negates that.

We had some super chilaquiles plus superb tetela chiapaneca con chicharon y queso, a triangular shaped made-to-order pastry filled with chicharon and white cheese from Chiapas. Service was cordial and efficient. The fresh orange juice is delicious. The free coffee that accompanies the breakfast combos is unspeakably dreadful; consider yourself warned.

Itanoní is the best place in Oaxaca for fine tortilla dishes, and they are a pioneer in cultivating, harvesting, and then preparing many different varieties of tortillas, contributing to agro-biodiversity by protecting land races of corn that are endangered by imported corn from the US. Open every morning, and thru the early afternoon... but don't expect them to be open in the late afternoon or evening. You want memelas, tetelas, tacos, chilaquiles (and even pozole on the weekends), nowhere better than Itanoní!
