Owner description: The ruins of this ancient Zapotec capital make up one of the most important archaeological sites in all of Latin America.

We got to the site first thing when they opened at 8:00 am and I would highly recommend this if you're not traveling with a big tour. Once the busses roll in the flavor changes. We were able to roam around this enormous ruin with almost no other people for at least 45 minutes. Climb all the stairs you can to get to the top for the best views. The history of this site is remarkable - and a lesson to us all - they probably abandoned the city because of a huge drought - they ran out of water.

It did more to stimulate my curiosity about anthropology and cultures of indigenous than the Pyramids of Egypt ... It is a hidden gem.

Not my favourite archaelogical site in Mexico (I preferred Teotihuacan, Chichen Itza and Tulum), but still pretty darn impressive. WHat made it stand out for me was its location on the top of a mountain, with a spectacular 360-degree view of the surrounding city and countryside. If you're in Oaxaca, you should go!

Easy to get to from Oaxaca by autobuses turisticos. You can get return tickets at Hotel Rivera diamante at corner of 20 de Noviembre and Aldama for only 40 pesos. The site is beautiful and fairly large so wear comfortable shoes and bring water. Well worth the visit!
