This hotel is not very nice. But it's not gross either. It was clean, and it fulfilled our need for a place to sleep, but I would say it's definitely for budget travelers. If you want a nice, charming hotel, this is not for you. It's also a bit far from the historic center (i mean, not really far, maybe a 15-20 minute walk) and it's located in a busier part of town, so there are always a lot of people on the sidewalks. But the staff was friendly and helpful, and it was cheap. I don't think I would stay here again, though. I would rather have a little more ambiance and pay a little more.

I've slept on a bamboo mat on a dirt floor for $2 a night and felt it was much better. For 400 pesos, I was given a choice between two fourth-floor rooms, one facing away from the street that was gloomy and smelled of ammonia vs. one with a street view and some sun (plus accompanying noise). I would have chosen the former, figuring I'd only be in there at night, but for the smell. I made the wrong choice. There's a major bus stopping point just down the street; it's on a major thoroughfare. The desk assured me it would quiet down by midnight, but buses were still going by at 1 AM -- not to mention incessant taxis with tire noise amplified by the stone street, plus occasional cement mixers, random construction equipment, honking horns, etc. I tried to shut the window for a while but, even with it being a cool night, the room was incredibly stuffy. The walls are paper-thin, and the doors blast shut with an echo, which was a major issue as two hall-mates were up until about 3 going in and out, slamming the doors, talking loudly, etc. The sheets were ultra-low quality, as scratchy as could be; the pillows were lumpy; I was lucky my bed was firm enough, given the other bed in the room was clearly broken-down.The shower did have good water pressure, I'll grant that, and it was clean enough. But given the overall excellent quality of places to stay I've encountered in Mexico, I can't believe you wouldn't be able to find a much better place for the money in Guanajuato to help make the stay there more enjoyable.

Nice hotel - Nice little restaurant, too (fabulous hot chocolate). Just two little problems: nobody anywhere in the town or the hotel spoke English - and our Mexican traveling companion got a MUCH nicer room than we gringos. So if you go there, ask to see a room on the first floor adjoining the courtyard before you pay (our room was on the third floor and was pretty tiny - his room had big french doors that opened onto the courtyard). And Guanajuato is one of the loveliest and noisiest places I have ever been to. Crack of dawn - chickens - cannon fire - yelling. Don't expect to sleep. Guanajuato architecture is STUNNING - screw the coast - who needs tourist towns. And if you rent a car you WILL get lost. Get the smallest car you can so that when you get lost on the mountain you can navigate the sidewalk-sized streets without getting your car stuck between buildings. And do not go into a men-only bar if you are not a man. (the bathroom is right in the bar - no screened off area - just zip and whiz!) (women in such places are assumed to be for sale!).

The perfect hotel to stay at in Guanajuato if you are on a budget. Safe (next to police station...if it matters), clean, and friendly. This hotel is only a short walk to many of the city's attractions.
