Mexican cities are known for their plazas. The Jardin (garden) is the best known one in Guanajuato but also probably the smallest of main squares anywhere in Mexico. Because of the crowded nature of Guanajuato, which has little extra room anywhere, all the plazas in town are small including the Jardin. It is lovely and usually jam packed with people, especially every evening. All around are places to eat or have a coffee and churches, banks, and shops are not much more than a block away. The famous Juarez Theatre is just off the plaza and both the plaza and the steps of the Theatre are filled with students at the end of each day. Mariachis play each evening and the occasional band does also in the gazebo/bandstand. Trees covering benches surround the Jardin but it is often hard to find a place to sit. It seems that everyone wants to be there after work.

El Jardin is very charming and offers travelers a look at both historic and modern-day Mexico. The garden is situated at the center of the city and can be used as a through-way to other nearby attractions. Its perimeter is surrounded by restaurants, shops, artists and other street vendors selling their wares. The numerous trees, with their trunks painted white, are trimmed in perfect squares and rectangles. A gazebo stands alone in the center. The garden, like most of the city, is kept impecably clean. Visitors can relax on one of the many benches to observe the plentiful activity and the many passers-by. Outside diners may hire musicians for a song or two while they eat, and men may buy a rose or silver jewelry for their lady from one of the many vendors passing by. This garden is a wonderful place to stop and catch your breath as you move through the city while sight-seeing or can serve as a place to spend the entire evening. One of the many smells, sounds or activities here are sure to be of interest to any and all who travel to Guanajuato.
