“Very good resort”
Reviewed 8 March 2012

The Canto del Sol is a very good option for a economical all-inclusive. The grounds are well maintained, the pool is very nice but on the small size, rooms are clean and adequate. Lots of food, fairly standard buffets. The grill restaurant had excellent steaks. The service is always excellent. There is a small beach but the water is rough for swimming, but that's the case all along the hotel strip. Canto del Sol is located about half way between the marina and downtown, and it's easy to catch a cheap bus to downtown and to the malecon. Or a taxi will cost you just a few dollars.
Be sure to go downtown to see the newly revamped malecon and outdoor boardwalk, really nice! Such a great addition to the downtown restaurant and shopping area of Puerto Vallarta. We were there at end of Jan, beginning of Feb and the weather was excellent, in low 80s for 2 weeks. Couldn't ask for better for the price.

I have stayed at the Canto 8 times and loved it. My most recent stay was in Feb. 2012. The last 7 times I had a large comfortable sunny room looking over the tennis courts. This time I was given a room that had a bedroom window looking directly onto the hallway and everyone walking by could look right in. For this reason, I had to keep the curtins closed the entire week and the bedroom was extremely dark to say the least plus it had few lights. There was a balcony facing the street but it was in an area of no sun and offered no privacy. There was no WIFI at all the entire week and the old TV (no flat screen as advertised in their ads) barely got 3 channels clearly. The bath tub was cracked and worn and the entire room has not been updated in years. I give the cleaning staff excellent rating for their cleaning but the place is just dated, worn and needs updating badly. When I brought all of my concerns to the front desk (Marlon) and was given the run around and told to check back. I did this 4 days in a row and finally brought him up to the room. He said it was dark and would check on changing it. He then said that there were no other room options available and I would have to stay in that room. This is the first time in more than thirty years of traveling and staying all over the world that the service desk refused my request and ignored doing anything to make the situation better. I love the location and the cleaning staff. They are extremely caring and dedicated. One other thing to note is that most chairs around the pool, are always taken and the ones that are open are usually next to smokers so be prepared to smell smoke constantly.

The best thing about this hotel was how great the staff were, they are really helpful, kind and fun. Had many interesting conversations with security guards and waiters. Beds were comfortable and grounds were nice. The food was good and I am a very picky eater. Puerto Vallarta was my favourite city I have every visited because of the people again and the charm of the city. The only two reasons I would not give a 5 star rating is because you can't get hard alchohol past (you can get beer and wine through room service) and there is no hot tub. Would stay here again in a minute if I got the same price.

Staff very helpful, not overly friendly, but polite. Rooms clean and resort grounds are extremely well-kept, very nice. Mexican a-la-carte restaurant was the best food, atmosphere and service. Italian and Grill so-so, one of my friends got sick after eating at the Italian. Buffet restaurant food was average, but I liked that the open hours were longer than other resorts I have stayed at. Not a big dessert selection. The omelette station for breakfast was great and so was the grill station at lunch time. Pool was nice but beach not very nice, small, dark sand and rough water not good for swimming. Watch out for time-share folks. Lobby bar was OK; we didn't really go to the nightly entertainment except for the Mexican night which they have every Friday night; that was nice. They move the buffet out to the open patio area by the water and the food is good that night. Don't book a-la-carte for the Friday night.

We recently stayed at this hotel for a week. Overall, this was a great experience. The hotel is clean, the grounds are beautiful and extremely well-kept, and the service was mostly very good.

For starters, due to our rediculous flight time we arrived at the hotel at 5:00 AM, and we could not get a room until 11:00, but we were given our wristbands immediately which gave us access to breakfast. In the meantime, the bellboy put our bags into storage, and the desk clerk directed us to a place in the hotel where we could relax until breakfast.

The room was very clean, the beds were great and we had a good view of the ocean and pool area. The room contained a safe for valuables, as well as an iron, ironning board, and a kitchenette. The cleaning staff did a great job, although occasionally the room was not cleaned until later afternoon. Not a huge deal.

The buffet had great variety, changed themes daily and the quality was very good (with the exception of the questionable house wine.) The wait staff are friendly and welcoming. There are three additional restaurants in the hotel requiring reservations, also with good quality and service. The pool area also has a snack bar serving burgers, pizza, nachos etc. The bar service in the pool area was also good.

The pool is large and kept very clean. One thing we missed was a hot tub, which would have been great in the cooler evenings. Apparently hot tubs are rare in Mexico. Great massages are offered at the end of the pool area, next to the crashing waves (very nice.)

All of the staff were most accomodating and polite. These people generally earn very low wages by Canadian/American standards, and they really appreciate tips, although we never got the sense that it was an expectation.

A couple of criticisms... The hotel provides three laptop computers in the business center for guests to use for internet access. The problem was that the connection seemed very spotty, and was often very slow. Don`t know if this is an issue with the internet provider or the hotel technology, but it was very frustrating.

And second, these resort hotels seem to think it is necessary to play LOUD dance music in the pool area and lounge area for much of the day. It quickly becomes annoying. The hotel needs to remember that it is not only catering to the 20-somethings. This was also the case at another hotel we stayed at briefly, as well as on a catamarran we went on to visit Yelapa. Sometimes just listening to the waves is very nice.

The location is central PV, and we could take a cab to many places for 50 pesos (around 5 bucks). The ride to the Malecon and all its great shops, restaurants, sand sculptures etc. was about 10 minutes.

Overall, I would recomend the Canto del Sol.

Room Tip: The pool-side rooms are a little noisier due to the partiers at the pool bar, but the A/C unit block...
