A friend of mine recommended this place a while back. He said it was a little pricey when he offered this as a good choice for dinner. We finally decided to check it out one evening after work. Since it's off the beaten path it's not frequented by Americans often as indicative by the menu - all Italian. That's a good thing for us since we know we're going to get authentic Italian cuisine.

The first course, which we both tried, was a local dish - baccala (dried and salted cod). This particular plate was a variant of the main course usually served. It was very tasty. Our second courses were beef steak for me and baccala for my wife. Both plates were again very good. My wife said after two dishes of baccala she wished she'd gotten something different. My steak was served rare to medium rare and had a good taste to it. Mixed vegetables, roasted potatoes, and salad came with the meal.

Since it's so close to the house and the food was good we'll probably return in the near future.

You need to know about this place:you'll never come across it by chance, on a minor road between Padua and Vicenza. A traditional trattoria, using the same recipes as when it first opened in 1932, it's one of those fantastic Italian places where you're welcomed like one of the family and treated to a feast. As is often the case, there's no menu, so you need a smattering of Italian. The trattoria specialises in baccala (salt cod) and grilled meats, so at least the menu isn't long. The mushroom soup was superb, as was the huge veal chop and accompanying vegetables, and as for the desserts...choux pastry filled with crema catalana was a heavenly concoction, drizzled with caramel sauce.
The house wines are so good it seems a bit excessive to order anything in a bottle. In short, the trattoria da Culata can't be faulted despite its unfortunate name, which means BUM!
