We stayed here en route to Cannes (2nd stopover night).
I had taken a while to track somewhere down that was interesting as opposed to the numerous conference type hotels in the the Grenoble area and my search revealed this place which was also recommened in a book called Back Roads France.
Communication with the hotel was excellent and a quiet twin room was booked.
It was only as we left the motorway at Grenoble that I realised I had booked somewhere high in the hills which wasn't a bad thing. As the road climbed to Villard du Lans snow became visible by the road side and eventually was quite widespread but the roads were perfectly clear (the weather for had been unusually warm for late March with 20 degrees plus and bright sun) We found the hotel easily having enjoyed the beautiful scenery and snow capped peaks and parked right outside. The owner showed us to the room (no. 10) which had 2 levels, an upstairs mezzanine with 2 more beds in it, presumably a family room. It had a sweet balcony with a view of the fields and mountains as well as their garden (with frozen solid pool!). Downside was a tempting mini-bar but no price list, in fact there was no info file in the room anywhere. Bathroom was basic but products were good.
We had gone for half board and had a great meal in the restaurant. The hotel is a classic ski lodge type so we were surprised by the fine dining experience. Sleep was great though the room was a little chilly as it had been well below freezing at night. Breakfast was excellent, a self service buffet, simply done but with the gentle sun coming through the windows and the snow capped peaks outside, I've never enjoyed boiling an egg so much.
Rather than track back to Grenoble to pick up the N85 we headed south from Villard du Lans to Die going through some stunning scenery including breathtaking gorges and up the Col du Rosset after which the scenery became more Provencal like. At Die we headed for Sisteron and the scenic section of the Route Napoleon all the way to the coast. Only problem was the Vercour national park was so beautiful it took some of the drama away from the Route Napoleon, the driving of which was part of the purpose of this trip!

Room tip: Try and get a nice view as there are some great vistas up there.

We have been basing our itinerary on the DK Eyewitness Travel "Back Roads of France" and needed somewhere to stay in the Rhone Alps. We were travelling from the Rhone valley to Die and then through the Rhone Alps to Glenoble and onto Annecy. The drive was excellent and this hotel was welcoming and comfortable at the end. The room was large with a separate shower and toilet. We had the half board package as there is little alternative out of season in what is essentially a ski town. Dinner was a bit like an amateur chef on Masterchef who does not know how to put menu or dish together but ploughs on anyway. But snow on the surrounding peaks, a log fire and nice glass of wine all made the evening delight even if the food was not the best.

Room tip: We had a room on the ground floor which was fine particularly for getting to and from the car.
