Owner description: A hike up 63-meter Mt. Alvernia to this small abbey will culminate in a panoramic view of Cat Island.

another boastful point for Cat Island; it has the highest peak in the Bahama Islands! The Hermitage sits high atop Mount Alvernia at 206 Ft! where i come from that is a grassy Knoll or hill! the walk, or climb as some may refer to is gradual and the path well groomed. The Hermitage is a wonderfully quiet place, peaceful with great views of both oceans. We love the stillness of the site, and the architecture for a "hand-built" structure is amazing to me, a true act of love to build this place here! We toured the island this year photographing the churches of Cat, we included the Hermitage as well. We have been four times and will return to admire the serenity and awesomeness of the Hermitage!

There are two routes up to the top of The Hermitage, a steep hilly staircase and a more moderate incline. Both bring you to the top where the 360 degree view is amazing.

Medium sized hill, with loose rock. If you are knowledgeable about the pilgrimage of Jesus on the cross to his crucifixion, it is an emotional experience, especially around Easter!

The other reviews are very accurate. Definitely a short rocky walk so do not wear flip flops. Was not so hot - we did not need water bottles. View is amazing. Road to Hermitage off main road is well marked so don't worry about needing directions. This is a very special place with wonderful views.

Great hike. A little challenging, so bring your sneakers and a bottle of water. Challenging because a bit rocky. The ruins are really interesting and there are great views as it is the highest point in the Bahamas at 206 feet. After your hike, head down to Hidden Treasures for lunch by the water.
