Our vacation methodology has been pretty predictable for the past few years... find the top rated, most luxurious hideaways in the middle of the most beautiful "nowhere" we can find, where very few tourists venture, with at least a few seductive or exciting amenities, and go there. We've been perfectly successful with this method, until now. Mustique is indeed a lovely island and the Firefly had all of the indicators that it would measure up to the places we’re accustomed to, but managed to fall short once we arrived. The views are indeed incredible. The Royal Palm room is aesthetically pleasing and comfortable. Most of our meals were very good, although the very limited menu did take away from the experience. The beaches and swimming were nice. Yet there was nothing seductive or special about the Firefly itself… other than the staff! We definitely, without a doubt, did NOT have the friendly interactions with Stan and Liz that we have read about so much. They were there the last 3 days of our stay. We saw but never met Liz, although the other couple staying explained that she had come out to greet them and introduce herself at breakfast. Liz also came down while we were having breakfast that very same day, but her lovely dog came out to greet us instead. She watched this, spoke with staff member Kyle, and left without ever saying a word to us. Stan smiled at us from across the bar as we danced and had a blast with the local homeowners and his bar staff on our anniversary night. He finally asked if we had had a good time as we were preparing to leave the Firefly. We found this quite unfortunate. Luckily, our interactions with Firefly’s staff and friendly local homeowners more than sufficed. It’s not hard to find staff that caters to you in these type places. Yet Firefly’s staff was unique in that we could tell that they sincerely cared that we were comfortable and had the best time possible during our stay. Knowing what I know now, I can tell that it is their hospitality and charisma that keeps this place on the map. Right from the start, smart young Kyle whisked us away from the airport and kept us well informed throughout our stay, which ensured that every day flowed as it should. Our new friend, staffer Dwight, took us to experience an amazingly authentic Independence Day celebration with locals visiting the island that we will never forget. Every evening, the conversation and laughter with he and Patrick flowed effortlessly because they are genuine people that my husband and I would choose to hang out with at any given time. Even the local homeowners showed us nothing but hospitality. One was even kind enough to come all the way to the Firefly just to make sure we knew about all the happenings on the island and invite us to her home, one of the most incredible homes on the island, giving us a grand tour and introducing us to other lovely Mustique homeowners. Our vacations are always memorable. This time around, I can attribute much of this to us meeting some wonderful people and making some new lifelong friends. Unfortunately I can’t honestly attribute any of it to the Firefly Mustique itself. So they wouldn’t have to worry about us returning.

Hi, I read your review with interest and it does sound as if you enjoyed your honeymoon at Firefly and had a great time experiencing Firefly and Mustique in a wonderful way; picnics on the beach, dancing, meeting other guests and home owners at the bar and being invited out. This is what Firefly is all about.
You say you enjoyed the room (the Royal Palm is fabulous) and that you had incredible views. You state “Firefly’s staff was unique … they sincerely cared that we were comfortable and had the best time possible during our stay” This is exactly what we want for all our guests. The Firefly staff are a wonderful team, many have been with us for decades and are very capable and well trained.

I was there for rather sad to read that you felt Stan and I ignored you. We value all our guests and want them to have the very best time possible. We feel very personal about Firefly and all that goes on here but are also conscious that we should respect the guest’s privacy and that while they are here this is their home and their space. Firefly is not about Stan or I, it is about so much more and ultimately it’s about the guest. Some guests want to chat and talk while others want to be private and we try to recognise this and not impose on anyone or invade their privacy.
Either Stan or I are available 24 hrs a day should we be needed and we work tirelessly both up front and behind the scenes to make Firefly what it is and to look after our guests in every way we can.

Just to quickly reply to your comment about the menu.
The lunch menu has dozens of choices on it, from fresh fish to pizzas, roti, burgers, pasta, salads etc. plus we offer an extensive picnic menu, which I know you enjoyed.
The dinner menu changes nightly offering a varied section of several different appetizers and main courses created from fresh ingredients brought in that day and cooked to order. We happily cater to special dietary needs and can offer vegetarian, vegan and gluten free options. If anyone asks for something special or different we always do our best for them. The Firefly chefs are all trained by me personally and want to do all they can to make the guests stay perfect for them.

This was our first visit to Mustique having previously always stayed in Barbados. Firefly was a revelation. From the moment we arrived we were treated so brilliantly by Lizzie and her team. We did not feel like we were staying in a hotel , more like we were staying in the house of friends.
As soon as we arrived we were sat on the balcony looking over the most amazing views. I am not quite sure what was in the cocktails but better than anything I have had anywhere in the Carribean. Food was fabulous, especially the fish. Service friendly without being servile. The beaches are close and the beach picnics (arranged by the hotel) are a must. (They start off reasonably civilised....!). Evenings in the bar are an experience with an atmosphere of a private club where only your friends are allowed to join but there is no feeling of being excluded (we knew no one when we arrived but had made many friends by the time we left) . Slightly pricey but not in comparison to other decent Carribean venues and have certainly spent more in Paris and London. We have already booked for next year!

Room Tip: We stayed in the Hummingbird room. Four poster and spectacular views.

I've been to Firefly many times and plan many more visits - boutique luxury, tranquil days down by the pool, lazy picnics on the beaches (the staff set up for you!), fun nights at Patrick's Bar - join in or kick-back, it's up to you. There are very few places left in the world like this. Some secrets have got to be shared.

Room Tip: Rooms are impeccably designed on cool white simple lines with rustic knick-knacks and have sunset balconies; you really cannot go wrong.

I visited Firefly Mustique as part of the 'best of both worlds' package which gives you time in the both Firefly's on Bequia and Mustique. As we arrived of the boat I was greeted by one of Firefly's staff who drove us up to the hotel. The views from the bar balcony are absolutely stunning, and perfectly position to see the sun set each evening.
We were shown to our room and we made ourselves at home. The level of attention to detail was incredible, from the mirrors framed with shells that we found out were collected from the local beaches, to the snorkeling equipment provided free of charge.
The famous macaroni beach was only a 5 minute drive in one of the rented 'mules' (basically a big golf cart) and we spent a lot of time there enjoying the sun and water. We would recommend the snorkeling of the pier near the cotton house, I managed to see a huge sting ray!
The bar was always lively in the evening with other guests and people from the villas coming in for drinks and food. The bar billiards table in the bar was a lot of fun to play. The bar staff were always efficient and entertaining to chat with. Stan and Liz were always a pleasure to talk to and helped us sort out anything we needed help with.
Overall it was an amazing stay and we were extremely disappointed when it came time to go back home. We can't wait to come back!
Thanks Liz and Stan !
(look out for my review of Firefly Bequia as well!)
