I decide on a 2** rating rather than a 1* because of the beautiful ocean and beach.

For the1* rating, let's start with the hotel itself. We spent 10 days with a leaking toilet and bathroom sink. Our "neighbor" arrived to a bathtub filled with water that had to be plunged. Our towels weren't replaced on a couple of occasions. The elevator broke down twice. The room was utterly charmless and could have been anywhere in the world. The view from our "ocean view" was completely obscured by a palm tree. We did have a tiny private balcony which overlooked the roof (and constantly humming air conditioning units) of the resort next door and was equipped with uncomfortable wrought iron chairs. We were advised to keep the door to the outside closed-really? no fresh air or ocean breeze?

Now to the service. I recommend that you arrive on the beach early to secure chairs and an umbrella. One day I arrived at about 10am to find no beach amenities. I talked to one attendant who said he would be back. Never saw him again. Finally I was able to find someone to help, but it took 45 minutes.

I'm so pleased (really!) to hear that other people have enjoyed good service because it was very much inferior to my expectations. Forget the concierge because she doesn't seem to understand her job. The most helpful and informative person was the doorman, Paul, who lined us up with Chris' taxi service. Chris was a great guide. Both Paul and Chris recommended restaurants that served good food and reasonable prices.

Service with a smile in the food venues? Only if you're lucky. Very impersonal, unlike the other islands my husband and I have visited. It truly puzzled me-are they poorly trained? Or what?

If your idea of a relaxing Caribbean vacation includes an occasional rum drink, forget it. It's like paying $15 for a glass of ice cubes, mixer and 1/2 ounce or less of rum. And all of the drinks tasted the same according to guests who explored the options.

This is a small gripe, but my husband's room key wouldn't work and he took it to the front desk where they reprogrammed it without a question (as you would expect). I lost my key and asked to have it replaced and was told I had to provide an ID. Fortunately, doorman Paul was there to intervene.

Wherever the $ earned goes (probably to some distant land), it certainly doesn't go back into maintenance of the facility. It is simply too expensive for what they have to offer.

This hotel, and Grand Cayman, offer a lot for a multi-generation family vacation. The location, Seven Mile Beach, is spectacular and the beach, and nice warm, very swimmable ocean make it special. For a price, there are plenty of water sports for children and adults alike.

The hotel rooms are fine, the casual restaurants are just right. The beach servers and those in Fernando's were superb. The menu and the food itself at the fancier Beaches restaurant was very good, but the service seemed to be disorganized and slow.

With that one blip, the staff in all areas was unfailingly welcoming, warm, and helpful.

One bigger negative was the noise level of the music at the outside catered events, held nearly every night. I am not against the events, but there is no need for the decibel levels that we experienced.

Still, I would return.

We've been to a lot of different Caribbean islands and have stayed at many wonderful places. I would rank this as a B- and I'll tell you why. The staff is very friendly and helpful so no complaints there. The food at the poolside TORTUGA BEACH GRILL AND BAR was okay but pretty expensive. You can expect to pay nearly $50 for lunch for two. The pool was small and was normally filled with kids when we were there. The beach was crowded but we never had a problem getting an umbrella as long as you didn't wait till after lunch. There were plenty of things to rent at the beach and the guys were very helpful and cheerful. The main reason for just a B- score was because the rooms were in need of some refreshing and it's my understanding that will happen soon. One final comment. We ate at the Beach House and it was absolutely fabulous! The crab cake appetizer was wonderful as well has the snapper. Again it's not cheap but a really fine meal.

My wife and stayed at the Westin last week and it was great. This is a very good hotel on Seven Mile Beach. It has a better beach than the Ritz, Klimpton and the Marriott because the Westin's beach is wider and with greater depth, This gives them more room to spread out the chairs for relaxation and comfort. The swimming area is also larger than the other hotels. The rafts are also a nice touch.

There was never a problem of getting a lounge chair with an umbrella at the beach. You would have to get there before 7:30 if you wanted the front row, but it was not necessary to be on the front row. We never sat at the pool, but the pool chairs do go quicker than the beach. The beach personnel were always friendly and helpful, includes beach guys and wait staff.

The staff are very accommodating. The first night we stayed on the fifth floor and the hotel chillers on the roof were very noisy during the night. The front desk changed our room the next day with a partial ocean view.

Every staff person that we worked with was very friendly and engaging, especially Paul, door man and luggage handler.

Also a tip of the hat to housekeeping. They would clean the room in the morning and they would replace the towels by early evening because they would replace them after our late showers after a day at the beach. The tortuga snacks and 2 water bottles daily were appreciated.

The lobby and the pool area have just been renovated and it is very modern and current.

Regarding the rooms being "tired", the hotel is going to renovate all rooms starting in May. This will make this an outstanding hotel.

We intend to be back.

Our memorable trip to Grand Cayman started with arriving at your hotel. The atmosphere at the Westin is true paradise, warm and relaxing. The staff were always friendly and went above and beyond to make our time there pleasant. One of the most enjoyable moments was experiencing the Sunday Brunch which was deliciously exquisite and after meeting head chef Thinesh we understood why it is so. His passion as a chef is evident and he genuinely cared that we enjoyed the cuisine and our dining experience. Thanks for the paradise memories!
