We stayed at Marias for one night before picking up our BVI charter. The hotel is a 5 minute
walk from the Road town ferry and customs office (although if you have a lot of luggage you might want to consider taking a cab.)

Maria's is adding a new wing so it is a little tricky to find the main door, but that should be resolved by spring 2013. The rooms are very clean, the beds comfortable and location to restaurants are good.

For the last 5 years I have traveled to the BVI for business one week a month for at least 3 or 4 consectutive months. Maria's by the Sea is my home away from home and it is the only place I stay. The staff is wonderful and Julia, the owner is as kind and welcoming as any experienced traveler could possibly ask for. The rooms are spacious, clean and neat. The restaurant serves B,L and D and the food is really really good, always. The ferry dock is a short walk away and you are right in the middle of town. If you are on Tortola for Business or an overnight before or after a charter this is the place to stay.

Room Tip: There is an entire new hotel building opening in a few weeks.......but 206 is my favorite so far.

Maria's By The Sea is a bundle of experiences: a welcoming receptionist with a huge smile at a very late check in; an accomodating manager who provides a brown envelop for valuables she will put in the hotel safe [there is no locked space inside the room]; one accomdating waitress who stands apart from her colleagues for that effort to provide the food you want even if you did not image the hotel kitchen could close so early [or that room service is only day-shiftish hours]. The cleaning staff are likewise dependable, sort of. Most days things are clean and orderly - to err is human, to leave a dirty pillow case is not a plus.
The view is the thing. Watching the ferries arrive and leave is worth a lot of small inconveniences and watching the sun fall into the ocean after its blushing the skies pink and peach -- well, what is not to love.
The breakfast is expensive and not good value, but it is a 3 minute walk to the sidewalk cafe across the street that offers an egg and sausage and coffee for $3. And a walk in the direction of the ferry terminal brings the restaurant choice one wishes: Blush, and a fun Italian streetside cafe and an upstairs sushi place and the most diet-destructive array of ice creams on the 2nd floor....
I work when I go to BVI and I can walk to my meetings. Swimming does not enter my schedule [but I can sneak into the pool and do 45 minutes of aquacise early mornings unless someone throws me out].
The rooms are large and clean. The electricity is reliable. The a/c comfortable. The light from the sea fantastic. The bathrooms are basic, but functional.
Not the Ritz. Not a hostel.
Decent price and services to match that price.

Room Tip: get a sea view. well worth it. there is construction and laundry noise elsewhere.

Due to the reviews, I convinced 3 other couples that this was the place to stay before and after we boarded our charter. Boy was I embarrassed.

The demeanor of the hotel staff is quite unwelcoming. Rarely was a greeting returned and we were often denied services like breakfast, "The kitchen closes in half an hour, so it's too close to that time to order", etc... No bellman to help with luggage.... and a power outage of two hours...infrequent wifi....

But it wasn't solely these inconveniences that give this place a '1' rating. Rather it was the giant cockroach scurrying across the lobby and the rooster going on all times of evening and morning - even by the pool in the afternoon. The construction noise. The burned out car by the side of the hotel and the visibly dirty bathrooms. The walls are paper thin and many of our group complained of getting very little sleep due to doors slamming and hallway traffic. We experienced the same.

The rooms are large - but very, very basic and extremely dated. The staff is not courteous - a statement not made lightly as we worked very, very hard to make the best of this stay as we had our own guests to please.

I'm really not understanding the decent reviews given alongside mine.. This place is very poor and I would highly recommend seeing other accommodations.

After sailing the British Virgin Islands, we spent the last night at Maria's by the Sea. What a charming hotel. Even though the hotel is going through some renovations, this little inconvenience did not bother us at all. We had a room that overlooked the harbor and enjoyed the sunset from the outdoor balcony. The staff is delightful and very helpful. Plus the restaurant's food is delicious. The hotel is located near the ferry building, a 5 minute walk. This place was a perfect ending to our visit to the Islands and would stay here again.
