Although relatively small, this is a wonderful collection of beautiful pieces of art by well known historic artists--a well as some excellent cotempatarty artists. We have been to many larger museums that do not have anywhere near the quality pieces that you will see here. The priests have done a great job of collecting over the years! They have a lot of money--given the high tuition fees--to buy good art, but they have an even better eye for art!

I suggest that you do the "quick tour" of the Montserrat property (which is a large area) and they focus this museum. The cathedral is nice, but the Black Madonna is a bit of a "bust." You can see her from the floor and not waste your time in the incredibly long line--look at the paintings of her in the museum!

This is such a small/low profile place that you may miss it in the quick walk through. Look at the map in advance, and know exactly where you are going.

This small museum is open Tuesdays and Fridays in the morning hours.
The exhibits deal with pre-Columbian life on the island (includung recent archeological finds), Irish arrival, sugar plantations, slavery, citrus and cotton industries, real-estate development and tourism up to the advent of the volcano.
Notable locals and expatriates are also featured.
There is a section where you can purchase souveniers (books about the island's history and culture by local authors, crafts, table mats etc, 'Fire Island' a picture book of the Volcano by MVO staff etc).
There may be more on display at the National Trust in Salem, but I did not visit that location.

As with many places we visited in Antigua and Montserrat, there is a perpetuation of British colonial history. At the museum, we talked at length with Donna about the Caribbean side of the story and got some insight into local attempts to reclaim the heritage that was lost during that period. If you get a chance, go down the hall and look at the archeological projects local students are working on.

Great picture exhibits and videos. Videos were on the history of the island, interviews with locals while the volcano was active, and of the rebuilding of the island. Good little gift shop here too - stuff here was less expensive than other places we saw.
