Owner description: The Montserrat Volcano Observatory (MVO) located in Flemings, Salem. The Observatory is a colourful state-of- the art building equipped to monitor the volcano on a 24-hour basis. The Observatory is strategically positioned to view the volcano and surrounding environs including the abandoned capital, Plymouth. There is also a helipad on site. Educational talks are offered.

If you go Montserrat, take a trip to the Observatory. It is very small but well informed. There are various posters outlining volcanic activity in Montserrat as well as other Caribbean islands. You can watch a short video, that really brings to life the magnitude of what occurred and clips of what the capital was like. It is also worth having a drive around to see the devastation and where people have settled since the volcano. Get a tour guide, preferably someone who was personally affected by the volcano and able to explain how things were before.

A visit to the Observatory is a must on Montserrat. You'll be up high and have nice views of the ocean, surrounding area and if the clouds let up of the volcano itself. You might even see some side vents steaming. Inside the observatory is a hallway with some photos of the volcano and there is a movie that is shown frequently that is short, but worth your time to watch to see the before and after footage of the volcano and its destruction.

When we arrived they just finished the demonstration of the vulcano video and we'd have to wait for another hour for the next one so we didn't see much. We just took a photo of the vulcano and left.

If you want to learn about volcanoes and the impact the Soufriere Hills volcano had on the island of Montserrat check out the MVO. Highly educational!

They have a short film which is worth watching. Lots of video from the volcano eruptions, and displays of how the volcano was created.
