We just completed seven nights at the Hacienda. We had heard about it through friends. It is a magical, peaceful , laid back hotel with a commanding view of the ocean five minutes from Esperanza.

The staff is warm and helpful, particularly Pamela and Gloria our server. Breakfast on the veranda overlooking the bay begins the day. The owner, Burr Vail and his trusty old english sheepdog, Zach, steered us to beaches one more beautiful than then next.

We would love to come back again.

Room Tip: Room 23 overlooks the ocean.

Booked day of for a last minute overnight to Vieques to do the Bioluminescent Bay Kayaking (also fantastic) and was thrilled. Hotel has beautiful views, and a fairly large property (compared to others), with a beautiful pool space. Staff was very accommodating, gave a tour of the hotel on check in, and had lots of suggestions and advice for travelers, and allowed us a late checkout since no one was taking our room that day. Rooms are simple but very clean and comfortable. Breakfast in the morning was great, and served outdoors! Location was close to everything we wanted to do on then island, definitely walkable to the Biobary tour we did, however we opted for a cab because the roads are narrow and do not have side walks. We walk to Black Sand Beach the next day though with no trouble!

The receptionist was very gracious and showed us around the property. We were only in town for the Bio Bay tour and our flight was early in the morning, so we missed the home cooked breakfast. The only concern was we could not shut the shutters enough to block the night sounds, so heard frogs, birds, etc all night. The island also is over populated with wild horses, so be prepared for the farm life aromas. The other guests were very quiet and hospitable.

Thank you for sharing your experience. Vieques is definitely a laid-back, rural island. It's not for everyone, however, most of our guests love being so in touch with nature.

Beautiful place. They had a great breakfast and rooms were very nice and large. Very clean and staff was helpful. They provide snorkeling and beach gear, but at a fee. View was amazing. Very quit guest house. We didn't see many of the guest around. Self serving bar was a little overly priced, but it was convenient. Photo is the view from the pool. This place was amazing and I would definitely return.

We arrived early for a 5 night stay and Mayra told us the room by the library that we booked was still occupied and showed us another room upstairs just around the corner from breakfast area. I believe we were in room 26. The look out the windows and it was a no brainer. The view overlooking the pool, wild horses and a glimpse of the ocean was perfect. The bed was so comfortable and pillows were perfect. An added touch were the 2 large hammocks overlooking the pool. At breakfast, we met Burr and he offered to sit down sometime and give restaurant and attraction recommendations. The made to order breakfast was wonderful under the old tamarind tree. We looked forward to breakfast special and really enjoyed the cranberry nut pancakes. The day after we got there, I wanted to have some laundry done as we had been 5 nights on Culebra. We came back from the beach and there was a laundry basket on the day bed with everything washed and nicely folded. Despite the weather being very windy and a lot of clouds, we were able to find La Chiva (blue beach). It was so nice to finally find a beautiful and calm beach that we could actually swim in without waves. The honor system was great and the unique decorations all around the property was fantastic. My only negative comment was when we got there, we were told to spray raid every time we opened and closed room door. The first morning after breakfast, I opened the door to find maid spraying a lot of raid all around and we were just a few steps from breakfast area. If this place is so ecofriendly, they would never be or encouraging the the spraying of a known pesticide. There are so many ecofriendly products that can be used to get rid of bugs without the detrimental effects of pesticides to us humans and our pets.

Thank you for the glowing review. We are so pleased that you enjoyed your stay.
We have had a lot of rain lately and that tends to bring mosquitoes. We continue to look for ways to control them that are eco-friendly and bring results. We certainly appreciate your concern and comments. Our goal is to leave a small footprint on the planet while keeping our guests comfortable.

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
Vieques’ Hacienda Tamarindo offers 17 very special rooms, each lovingly and creatively designed and decorated by owner, Linda Vail -- her swan song after over 20 years as a commercial interior designer. Each guest room and public space is unique; imaginatively spiced with a lifetime’s accumulation of art, antiques, and collectibles. An ancient Tamarind tree in the lobby atrium majestically rises three stories through the center of the building. Terraces, courtyards, and sitting rooms offer ample space for relaxation and conversation. The Hacienda is perched on a hilltop with spectacular 180 degree views of the Caribbean -- from sunrise to sunset; looking down on the bedazzling, ever-changing myriad of blue, emerald and turquoise waters. Caribbean trade winds and lazy paddle fans keep you cool and comfortable. Here, you can fall asleep to a tree frog serenade and awake to the smell of jasmine on the gentle sea breeze. ... more   less
