You may even see some street sellers on the capital selling ''brazo gitano'' from this people. They are the best at what they do, and have a lot of time doing it.

Open for over 100 years, this is one of my "must" stops when in Puerto Rico. Yes, it's three hours from the metropolitan area, but you can make it part of a visit to the West coast and try their iconic brazo gitano. They make it in a variety of flavors, with or without cheese (With cheese must be refrigerated). And since you are there, try their local cuisine or the sandwiches made with their own bread. See pictures of the Cuban and the Mixto - a lot of meat! Finish your lunch with a slice of this tasty dessert (See picture)

Coffee and pastries were excellent--took us awhile to find parking -- there are no signs outside of building

It's very popular in the island, so it's a stop you can't miss if you are in Mayaguez or near by. They have the brazo gitano, the guayaba is the most famous, but they also have it with different fillings. I found the little shop cute & unique. They also have some other puertorrican candies, honey, coffee, sangrias for sale. It's a good place to buy some souveniers if you are visiting. They also have a panaderia/ cafeteria at the back of the store were you can sit and have breakfast and/or lunch. I liked it.
