We stayed at the Cave House, which was breathtakingly beautiful. It directly overlooks crystal clear waters, and it has its own private cove. There are "noodles" to help float, and we brought snorkel gear -- there are fish right there, just off the house. Since the cliff directly overlooks the water, it's totally possible to "cliff dive" in private into your private cove.

As others have said, the porch and area overlooking the water is more or less completely private, so we felt free to skinny dip -- although, ahem, watch out for the boaters going to Rick's Cafe two hotels down. (As a side note, the boaters and music from Rick's Cafe can be a little obnoxious -- we dealt with it by just going to dinner early.) The porch is *mostly* hidden by vegetation, but it's possible to see the Round House chairs to the left, and another set of chairs to the right. There are two full sunbathing benches in front of the porch that are in fact totally hidden, though, in case you want to sunbathe without a tan line :)

There is a tiny fridge (not a full kitchen here, though I think there is one at the Round House) so you can store your food, but no microwave.

The water pressure was fine and plenty hot, which was nice.

The staff was really nice - Trevor showed us around and the cleaning staff were relatively non-intrusive when we asked them if we could sleep in late. They did a great job cleaning up.

The continental breakfast was tiny, but enough to hold us over until lunch, and the quality of the fruit was indisputable.

Some minuses:

- This is an open air cottage, so no air conditioning. I know others say they don't miss it with the overhead fans, but it does make a difference.

- "Open air" means open to geckos and small ants too. The geckos sing at night, like frogs, so bring ear plugs. The ants are mostly ignorable

As trenstar says, Ivan's Bar at Catcha Falling Star has impeccable food, and is walkable to; Devon's House of Ice cream has some of the best ice cream I've had; and Chicken Lavish's chicken does not live up to its name, but is fine. We would stay again.

First let me say that this resort is more like having your own gated paradise on twelve acres of land in the middle of a very low income impoverished drug riddled country. On the outside of the gates is a somewhat scary place although didn't witness any crime at all in the three days we've been here but the smoking of marijuana is literally on every person. Even the hired hand in our resort is openly smoking a joint as he works. That said I haven't seen the violence and thievery that is usually associated with drugs.
Now about the accommodations, they are little bungalows perched as close to the sea as you possibly can get without falling off. From our balcony was a thirty foot drop off a cliff into the most amazing clear blue water you could find in the Caribbean. However if you think that seven mile beach is gonna have this amazing white sand beaches you will be disappointed. They are dirty, littered with trash floating in the water. The breakfast you are served is fine to a hold a woman over until lunch but not a man. You are limited to one cup of coffee which was fine for us, but may not be for everyone. We stayed in round house and after looking at the others I still liked ours best. There is a private staircase and very large landing at the waters edge which is where we have spent most of our time.
Places to eat. We ate lunches that we fixed in our kitchen then splurged on dinner. DO NOT do pizza at archway...much worse than frozen pizza. We did the lobster pizza and that was painful. The snapper in papaya bowl at LTU is amazing. It not the chicken Lola. We did the ricks cafe. Not a great place to eat but everyone should go at least once. We tried to be back in the resort by dark. Be VERY careful on the little roads when walking, but it is doable. We had banana and pineapple flambé at catcha falling star which was heavy on the rum but good.
If I came back to Jamaica I would only stay here or one of the cave resorts.

This was my husband's and my fourth trip to Negril and Citronella is the sixth property at which we have stayed...no need to search any further, Citronella is our new home in Negril! There are several reasons for this:
1) PRIVACY...you just can't get this amount of privacy at many (any?) other resorts in Negril.
2) Wonderful staff...very helpful when needed, but they are very careful to not invade, what else, your PRIVACY
3) Gorgeous, lush grounds and vegetation (adds to the PRIVACY factor)
4) Cute, clean, and comfortable cottages with everything you need, each one has, again, PRIVATE sea access
5) Nice guard dogs who are friendly, but they also respect your PRIVACY...wouldn't mind if they came around more though

We stayed 12 nights split between the Round House and A-Frame. The cottages stayed nice and cool with the sea breezes, some nights I even got chilly and had to use one of the warmer blankets provided. I expected to see some bugs and saw very few, also a couple of geckos, which are welcome bug eaters. Oh, and a butterfly that fluttered through the A-Frame ever so gracefully. We used the mosquito nets when sleeping at first, but then got lazy and stopped and never saw a mosquito or got any bites inside the cottages. Mosquitoes were my only concern with the open air cottages and we had no problems at all.

Citronella may not be everyone's cup of tea, especially those who need to be entertained constantly. There are some great places to get food and drinks within walking distance and the route taxi system is inexpensive and convenient to get anywhere on the cliffs, to town, or to the beach. The best entertainment is to go to the Wise Choice market down the street, fill your fridge with beer, rum, wine, juice, sodas...whatever you enjoy...and chill on your private verandah to watch the most amazing sunset and then stargaze until you can't hold your eyes open any longer. Pure bliss.

+
Extremely friendly / helpful owner, will go out of his way to help you, full of interesting local information about Jamaica, provides free snorkeling equipment / etc
Gorgeous accommodations and grounds
Very private, with your own access to the cliffs/sea and several places to go cliff-jumping
Daily meticulous housekeeping
Free wifi

+ / -
Small but tasty continental breakfast (cinnamon raisin toast, some fruit, coffee/tea)
Very open layout, but this also means you can hear everyone else in the house
No air conditioning, although this wasn't really needed as the sea breeze and fans sufficed
No TV
Not much light at night

-
Horrible water pressure. Water is warm enough but pressure is non-existent
Lots of bugs, including large palmetto cockroaches (we killed 3 of them during our stay) and several very small ants
Very loud at night, especially during the weekend, due to a noisy neighbor that likes to play music until midnight, barking dogs, and mating/fighting cats
Beds are all different and some are not very comfortable (i.e. no spring mattress for some), a few stained sheets (don't expect white duvets)
Relatively far away from the beach (~15 mins drive)

Conclusion: if they fix the water pressure issue, put some screens on the windows to keep the bugs out, throw out the sheets with stains, and get the neighbor to stop playing loud music until midnight, we'd stay here again

Tips: Catch a falling star for dinner is relatively expensive for Jamaica but very tasty and is a 5 minute walk; LTU pub next door is just ok but it'll do the trick; lighthouse is within walking distance (and walk another 10 mins past the lighthouse to grab some pretty good Jamaican patties at out of town pastry); early bird special (before 6pm) at Kuyaba at the beach is recommended; famous vincent will pick you up in his boat to go snorkeling for $25/person, overall experience is good but beware that he drinks while he drives, you may get hit on by his assistants, and he'll also try to get more clients on the ~30-45 mins ride to the reef

Stayed at Citronella for the second time this past October and left feeling better than I did the first time I visited.
The owners are extremely friendly and very accomidating, as well as the staff. The land is unbelievably beautiful and you'll never see a prettier sunset. Ocean access is beatiful and just feet from the back door. My fiance and I enjoyed many snorkling trips where we saw lots of sea life.

Ill be back again next year for sure to enjoy the local cuisine and friendly locals.
