My husband and I first came to Sandal Royal Plantation for our honeymoon in 2016, and returned during reunion week in 2018. I can’t say enough fabulous things about this resort! The restaurants are fabulous, the entertainment is great, the butler service is out of this world, the spa is serene, and ending each night in the Wobbly Peacock Pub is always the highlight of our stays! We can’t wait to come back to Sandals Royal Plantation!!

Room Tip: Every suite has a butler, you can’t go wrong!

The bad first. The hotel rooms are tired. Furniture is a bit worn. Shower was in rough shape (but we had a second room with rainfall shower head which was amazing). Air conditioning was not as strong as I’d like. Pool was mini sized but overlooked the ocean which was nice. No swim up bar. You can kinda hear the busy street on the east side (west side you probably can’t but would have beach noise.....but no one is there and entertainment doesn’t last that late....your choice). We stayed in a room with a balcony and I think it was worth the extra. But all rooms are ocean and minimum have a Juliet balcony.
And that’s it! Otherwise food was amazing. Drinks fantastic. The real difference is that it is so small you fell like you have the resort to yourself. And all the staff are friendly and happy. Jamaican patties are at the beach front restaurant I had 2 a day. Mind blowing. The ocean was perfect for swimming and we saw a star fish on the west side. We also saw lots of jelly fish so keep your eyes open!
Hints.
Next door (Ochi) Kellys Landing was great. Many pools. And water sports (we snorkelled it was pretty good - but I think the team should tell you what sort of fish you will likely see). We were there every day in the afternoon or evening. The tram is every hour so we would walk. But not at night. Traffic on the street is crazy so be careful.
Club Mobey at Montego Bay airport is like an admirals club but you fast pass security and have a great lounge to eat and have some cocktails. Do it! $40 person worth every penny.
Airport to hotel is 2 hours.
Staff at the sandals lounge at Montego Bay airport are exceptional! I enjoyed 2 cocktails and was happy! Our driver Warren was amazing and we didn’t wait! On the way back his wife drove us. love these two! Plus I think sandals guarantees no more than a 20minute wait in the lounge.
Golf is 10minutes away. Rose our caddy was exceptional I’d ask for her again. She made our game more fun!
Would we stay again. That I don’t know we may just try something different. I felt the room was impacted with street noise and there wasn’t enough transportation between the resorts (with the walk feeling dangerous given the fast vehicles). We’d stayed at La Toc in St Lucia and if you stay in the butler suites it’s a similar feel. But the ocean isn’t as nice to swim in.

My wife and I spent our honeymoon here in October 2017 and it couldn't have been better.

Our butlers were Sean and Gladstone, and they catered to our every need. In addition to seeing them around the resort, they also provided us a cell phone to call them directly. In the mornings when the beach bar hadn't opened yet, we would give them a call and minutes later they would be hand delivering us drinks at the water. They also made us dinner reservations at the Ochi Beach Resort (which is a 2 minute shuttle drive away), and would even escort us directly to dinner at Ochi Beach Resort.

For fun and events, Jason was in charge. We saw him every day organizing kayak races, bocce ball on the beach, evening entertainment, etc. We loved talking with him and doing activities, and he made our stay so much fun. During one of the nighttime shows in which there was juggling and fire breathing and such, Jason pointed out some couples that the performers should pick to go out and help with the performance. It was nice surprise when we got selected to go up there, and we owe it to Jason.

As far as the resort itself, it was so nice and quaint, and we felt it was the perfect place for a relaxing honeymoon/vacation. You could always find a lounge chair down by the beach or a floating water hammock to lie on. And speaking of lounging by the beach, when the beach bar was open (which was pretty much all day) the beach butlers were continuously walking the beach taking drink and food orders. We never had to wait for a drink or flag someone down, they were very attentive and on top of things. There was also a croquet court that we enjoyed a lot.

And if you wanted a little more excitement, you could hop on the 2 min shuttle to take you next door to Sandals Ochi Beach Resort. We went there one afternoon to check it out and got an adult cruise vibe from it. There was a large pool with a swim up bar, pool games (floating beer pong, flip cup, scavenger hunt, water volleyball, etc), and so many food options. Although we preferred the quiet, relaxing beach over at Royal Plantation, knowing that you could switch it up by hopping on a 2 min shuttle was great.

Overall, if we had to do our honeymoon over again we 100% would choose Royal Plantation. We can't wait to go back in the future.

We just returned from a one week stay, March 28 – April 4, and had a great vacation. The resort is quiet and laid back, with easy access to the adjacent Sandals Ochi if you want a little more excitement or a wider variety of restaurants. The butlers were a nice complement for the resort, they handled all the dinner and golf reservations plus provided extras like snacks in the room before dinner, but certainly were not intrusive. They were around only when you needed them, and you are provided a cell phone to call them if you need something.

We spent most of our time on the west beach, the resort seemed to be near capacity at the start of our trip and we never had an issue getting beach chairs. The early birds certainly play the towel game to get the best seats front and center with an umbrella, but we were there around 8 am most days without issue. Furthermore, we played golf three times and returned after lunch and had no trouble finding chairs. It is also worth noting the buildings start providing natural shade around 3 pm so over exposure to the sun wasn’t a problem for us. One additional beach tip – we went on the complementary one hour snorkeling trip and there wasn’t much to see. However, we also snorkeled off the beach around the piers/docks and there were lots of fish (and a small stingray) to see so that is probably a better way to go, just get the gear from the water sports on the east beach.

The logistics for the golf were very convenient. There is a free shuttle to the course that takes about 10 minutes, there is a schedule posted at the resort. We were on the 8:20 am shuttle (breakfast starts at 7:30 am so no problem eating beforehand) which had us teeing off no later than 9 am and we were on the 12:30 pm shuttle back to the resort after 18 holes with time to spare. The course is in okay shape, the greens are a little slow and small but the caddies are extremely helpful with reading putts. The course is also very quiet so you just play with who you go over with (no getting paired up with anyone); when we played there were less than 20 golfers on the entire course, in three rounds we waited on a shot only once. It is also very casual in terms of tee times; we booked a time with our butler, but once there you get your caddy and off you go. In terms of tipping there was a sheet suggesting $10 - $30 per bag (one caddy for the two of us) – we found our guys helpful on the greens and they also essentially gave my wife a playing lesson so we enjoyed the experience.

The only downside is the size of the resort. It is very small which we were aware of, so no long strolls along the beach (we “paced” back and forth to replicate) and limited variety at the breakfast buffet (and ordering off the breakfast menu is slow for some reason). Overall a positive experience, lots of people there were returning guests and we would likely return in the future.

We have just spent a week here and the weather and location were amazing. The hotel is very well positioned and whilst some criticize the need for a refurb, we thought it was ok and in keeping with the plantation look and feel.

First to the great things about the hotel. The staff on the whole are very good and particular the beach waiters who were excellent. The beach facilities were very good and the beach perfectly maintained. The food was excellent with afternoon tea on the terrace a nice touch. We thought that the French themed Papillon was over rated and they try a little too hard. Some dishes great, others less so (duck and Chateaubriand), but it could be a produce source issue! They have a French chef who worked in both Paris and Lyon so he knows what he is doing.

On the not so good, the tour experience was poor before we had even arrived. They encourage you to book in advance, which requires prepayment and is not necessary. I would ignore the pre booking emails they send you, and won't go into the details but I gave up with frustration. However, One offer was a private car transfer, which we had to book ourselves. Should not have bothered and I am still convinced it is a scam as we just went in a van, with no water or wifi which was being promoted as a benefit, and initially I was told we were sharing with others, which when I kicked off about we went by ourselves. When at the hotel the butlers knowledge of local tours was disappointing.
We got caught with the managers wine list one day, when we asked for a glass of rose. We were told that was only by the bottle, but not offered a wine list or told there would be a cost and what cost! I challenged the manager later that day and was offered a 50% discount, but definitely felt that as the customer I was to blame - never nice.
We were there for what they call reunion week of returning guests. This was our first time to Sandals. It may have been the occasion but there were a number of loud and obnoxious Americans taking over the place, but it goes with the territory I guess.
So in summary a very nice small hotel, and whilst the staff were very good, it was inconsistent with some very 5 star performances, but equally some very odd at 3 or 4.
