Nice Hotel but location is a bit remote

We just returned from Guadeloupe and stayed at La Cocoteraie, an hotel located in Grande-Terre island in the town of Saint François. The hotel is nice although the decor of the room could use some upgrading, but the place was clean, the personnel friendly and helpful. It's not a place to come with children as the swimming pool is the only place for physical activities. If you decide to stay there accept their offer of 70 euros to bring you to the hotel from the airport (located in the capital Pointe-à-Pître). The ride takes about 45 minutes without traffic. We paid 100 euros to arrive at the place so on the way back I asked them to book us a taxi and got the better rate.
Breakfast is included and the food is good: beside the croissants, and other patisseries you have a choice of cereal, lots of fresh fruit (pineapple, mango, melon, water-melon). Also some yogurt, scrambled egg, bacon and sausage.
The beach is very small. They have a very large and beautiful pool. There is a public beach adjacent to the hotel which we used on some day. It was not very crowded.
The only problem with the hotel is the location. We rented a car for a couple of day and it took us almost 1hour and a half to get back from Pointe à Pître. The traffic is heavy and turns intense at commuter time.
I would love to return to Guadeloupe and stay on the part called Base-Terre which is less crowded and has more trails, to do some hiking, an activity I particularly enjoy.

My wife and I stayed at La Cocoteraie from 3/13 until 3/17. It was a perfect fit for us on this last minute trip on Norwegian Air.
We arrived late on Monday night after an hour drive from Point-a-Pitre airport. La Cocoteraie was an oasis of quiet as we pulled onto the property after driving thru the cacophony on the road through the marina area that leads to the property. Laurence(?sp.) helped us get checked in and we got settled in our room(she was very helpful throughout our entire stay). As dinner was winding down for the evening, Christian the manager, offered to personally make us a plate of chicken and cheeses and got us a drink at the bar. He was very welcoming and helpful.
Our room was basically a two room suite that was spotlessly clean. The second room with a couch and TV we hardly went in. The bedroom was plenty roomy and the bed was comfortable. The air conditioning worked fine.
The breakfast area was absolutely beautiful and had a wide variety of fruits, cheeses, eggs, sausages, coffee and teas plus much more. This was our favorite part of the day.
The beach was smallish(actually there were two beaches), not a swimming beach, but enough that you could walk in to cool off. The windsurfers and kite surfers were very entertaining to watch. The pool was gigantic; big enough to swim laps, should you so desire. There is a bar attached to the pool and you could swim up for drinks. We spent an enjoyable hour before dinner our second night talking with Alan the bartender. A very nice and friendly man.
The location of the hotel was great for us as we didn't plan on spending most of our time exploring the island. We walked to the marina area and ate at Quai 17. St Anne and the other southern beaches are about 20-30 minutes away.
The hotel certainly could use some sprucing up, but we lived in the Caribbean for three years and understand that maintenance and upkeep is a never ending battle against the elements in the Caribbean. I believe renovations and improvements are underway and will be ongoing. That said, we had no problems in our room.
In summary, La Cocoteraie, gets a 5 star rating from me for:
Quiet
Beautiful setting
Spotlessly clean room
Beautiful breakfast and dining setting
Location
I would stay there again.

Room tip: All rooms seemed equally good to us.

We just spent 3 days at the hotel one year after our previous review. The location is great, the pool is wonderful and the breakfast area is cozy. While the room was OK, it was in urgent need of painting, new furniture etc. At the price point we would have expected a kettle or coffee machine in the room along with wi fi, better toiletries. The grounds need work and the pathways replacingWe doubt if this hotel will survive unless they invest significant funds. Pity

This hotel was obviously a great hotel many years ago, but it has not been kept updated and this certainly shows which is such a pity as it is in a lovely position with a beautiful golf course opposite and a marina with shops and restaurants a short walk away.
The staff are certainly trying their best, our suite was huge & kept spotlessly clean.
It was like a bungalow with 2 patios right on the beach and a fabulous swimming pool which was very clean.
Breakfast definitely needs upgrading, but they now have new restaurant staff from France and they are trying to do a wonderful job, we ate at the hotel twice in the evening and the food was the best on the island with a charming waitress who hopefully is going to have a lot of input to the restaurant.
The owner needs to sort out the problems otherwise this hotel will not survive which would be such a shame.

Room tip: They are all suites and all facing the sea.

I read about all of the "better" hotels and decided on this one because although pricey, it had a lot of amenities, or so it says. We arrived Sat. 12th. it was horrible. of course the room was large and we shared it with the LIZARDS. PLENTY ROOM FOR ALL. NO RESTAURANT, NO BAR, NO WIFI-well, they had it in the lobby. TV-10 CHANNELS ALL IN FRENCH. THIS HOTEL WAS A NIGHTMARE. THE BEST THING WAS GETTING THE H... OUT AND GOING HOME.

Visited in late February 2016 and found the hotel staff friendly and accommodating. We had a suite, garden view at $270/night. The room was the farthest from the main building with a partial water view. The space in the room was above average with a full living room area, a bathroom with a tiny shower and a full 2nd bathroom with a tub, and a bedroom with with a Euro queen--being two twin beds shoved together. Amenities were average, but we enjoyed finding a small refrigerator in the bedroom. The tiny shower water temp was very hard to regulate and no one could use the sink or toilet water, lest you feel a big change in temperature. The only other downside we found was the larger bathroom with the tub lacked screens on the windows and had only shutters--meaning, mosquitoes were welcome. Thankfully we had only one to contend with on our last night, but it was a relentless light dodging beast who plagued us all night long, I believe even being bitten after I sprayed with DEET. In general, we did not experience many mosquitoes at all on the entire island. The hotel pool is very large and in good condition and towels were provided. There was an ancient little safe that did the trick, though be sure to practice with it to ensure it is locked. A typical euro breakfast was included, featuring bread, cheese, jams, yogurt as well as eggs and bacon. We were not charged, which I wondered if that was a mistake, and we also found it was the ONLY breakfast in the area. There is a super market, oddly called a Casino just down the street. There are also numerous great dining options a short walk down the street, around the pier and stretching west. The property itself could use cosmetic updating throughout. We easily overlooked these things, but I could see some taking close up photos of places needing paint or rusted this or that. If this is important to you, this is likely no more than a 2 star location. I'd call this a 3.5 star location given my experiences and quality. It edges the 4 stars because of location, value & generally hospitable staff. (Last note, anyone expecting warm and fuzzy Midwestern charm should stay in the US. This is a French island, and English and chatty are simply not French. If you are good with it being a French island, I highly recommend it!)

Room tip: Check for mosquitoes in your room before you go to bed.
