Nice and quiet location

4.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed 23 Feb 2013
From the documents available at the La Plantation it was clear that it wasn't really used to a lot of non-french speaking guests ... but as it turned out during our 1 week stay it wasn't a problem. Staff was friendly and making an effort in trying to understand and make themselves understood.
From a friend living in Guadeloupe we were told that La Plantation had been a 5 star place some years back, but apparently hasn't put the money into keeping the level, so now it's 'only' a 4 star place ... but a pretty decent one. However, in spite of some areas of fine-tuning we had a very nice time there, as we really valued some of its key strenghts : a beautiful pool, quiet location and free access to a tennis court & mini golf.
So a good place to start your Guadeloupe exploration from ...

My husband and I had a very pleasant time in this hotel. We chose it for our honeymoon and it could not have been better. We are rather surprised of the previous negative comments concerning this hotel, as we did not have any trouble in here. All the staff was very congenial with us and helpful, they gave us good advices concerning our trip. We particularly enjoyed the spa and the massages. The room was large and clean. So was the bathroom. We are planning to come back to Guadeloupe and we'll probably choose La Plantation again. We also recommended this hotel to our friends for their next holidays.

Room tip: We could see the swimming-pool from the window of our room, which was very pleasant.

I chose to believe the positive reviews and to ignore the negative ones, boy was I wrong! We arrived to a bath that had a filthy ring around it. I asked for it to be cleaned, and it was not until my third call on our second day that it was cleaned. There were rats in our air vent, the noise was really awful of the rats rummaging around in the air vent. We were moved to another room after I complained about the rats. I was offered bribes by two separate people. For an all inclusive package, the only decent food was available on a payment basis. The all inclusive food was revolting. The service was very poor at the inside bar, the beach bar was not bad. I have been to Club Med before which is also a 4 star resort and you cannot compare. La Plantation should be 2 star max.

If you want to stay in a decent hotel with your family, this hotel is nice. The amenities certainly do not correspond to a 4 Star hotel. No room service. The rooms are very spacious, well air conditioned and equiped with a small kitchenettes. However, do not look for chic toiletries or a bath robe or slippers to go to the spa. There is only one restaurant. After a few days of the same menu, fortunately, we were able to order pizzas to go 50 yards from this hotel. There is also a "creperie" next door. Otherwise, we drove to the marina for dinner. I aso did a litte grocery shopping at a convenience store (Huit à Huit) and there is a "Thieret", a store that sells frozen meals that are easy to heat in the micro wave. If you are vacationing with your family and you aren't too picky, I recommend this hotel. There are many beautiful beaches and excursions in Guadeloupe ( Soufrière, Desirade, Les Saintes, Botanical Gardens) that are worth seeing.

Never been to Saint Francois before in Guadeloupe; always been in Basse Terre and I already enjoyed it tremendously. Saint Francois, in Grand-Terre is a cute little town that has all the ingredients of the Creole Culture, its patisserie, its colours, its cafes, its rum, its local chocolates, its music and typical buildings.
We arrived to the hotel by a huge alley flanked by palm trees and got in front of a huge, majestic red roughcast building. As we entered this building we discovered that this is the reception of the hotel and this building holds also 2 huge meeting rooms. The decoration is definitely in the caribean style with warm colours and use of woods. A lot of fresh tropical flowers just add to the quality of the atmosphere.
Smiling, courteous and friendly front desk staff welcome us and shortly after we went to another building to get into our room.
We had a superior room and we got impressed by the quality of the furnitures and decoration. This is really high class and posh. I recognized that furnitures are from Bali for having been there. The room was huge, about 480 square feet (45m²). There is a fully equipped bathroom including a dishwasher.
The bathroom is spotless but outdated and could stand some renewing. But that didn't matter much as the room overall was a pure delight. The quality of bed is top and believe me I am very picky about mattress but we slept like babies. And our room had a huge balcony over the swimming pool which was great.
The perimeter overflow pool is top. I met other hotel's guests there and we enjoyed so much the swimming pool and around it during the day and during the night as it is lit and there is a nice cafe there.
But the highlight of the stay is their 5 World Spa; that is really super cool! The masseuses are really beautiful and professional. The rooms are spotless, very well perfumed, a cool atmosphere and you feel totally at ease.
I enjoyed also the beaches around the hotel, plage de bois jolan at Saint Anne, la plage des Salines at Saint Francois for sunbath close to the Pointe des Chateaux, La plage de la Caravelle at Saint Anne, coconuts trees, white sand beach and turquoise water.

We enjoyed our stay in this hotel. We had a room overlooking the pool and the rooms are large and spacious and very clean. The restaurant was very good--fresh products and simple preparation.
One important point: this is a great hotel for families since the rooms have little kitchenettes and refrigerators but it could present problems for those who want a quiet vacation. The second day of our stay a young couple with a baby moved into the room next to us. Since the walls are not well insulated we were kept awake a good part of the night with the crying baby. The hotel was not full so they very graciously moved our room immediately. However, if the hotel was full, we could have had a very unpleasant week.
