“What can I say...”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 17 March 2012

We landed in Punta Cana and our 2 year daughter already had a high fever (rapid deterioration on the plane). We were hoping this was a 24 hour thing we could shake off and then get into action. The next day it was clear we had to see a doctor. We went to the on site medical clinic (staffed with a pediatrician) and found out it was strep throat. The doctor was very professional and was able to dispense antibiotics right away. It was very convenient to not have to go off site to see a medical professional. A few days later our 5 year old was also afflicted. Despite this, we found the staff, the management ,the food, the general quality of the resort basically uncomparable to others we've been to (this includes, Le Meridien in St- Martin, Sandals Ocho Rios, Iberostar in Riviera Maya). Our girls took some advantage of the mini and petit clubs and really enjoyed them (despite being a little lethargic in recovery). Overall, there are two takeaways here - this is a top notch well run operation with lots of things to do and secondly, if you're going to be sick on vacation, there's no better place (the manager and staff were downright doting on us). The GOs are spectacular, I've never seen such a professional and hard working group (Folka, Paul, Lauren, Christine, Lori and so many others equally awesome... and the wonderful GO whose name I forget but who ran back to the petit club as we were leaving to get the arts and crafts our 2 year old had made while in their care). Final mention goes to Leo, manager of the Hispaniola Restaurant. Leo was really the best for making sure our vacation wasn't fully compromised by our health problems - on our one night out he ensured we got five star treatment. Pretty expensive vacation but if you can afford it it is worth every penny, our only regret is we were not able to fully take advantage of the place and time.

Dear SunChaserMTL,
We’re sorry to hear that your young daughter became ill on your trip over to our resort. However, we are pleased to know our on-site doctors were able to treat her strep throat and that our GOs were very professional and accommodating to your family. We greatly appreciate you reviewing our Club Med resort. We hope to see you and your family again soon!
Best,
Your Club Med Team

We spent a week at Club Med Punta Cana with our three boys, their wives and their seven children. We selected Club Med because we had taken our boys to several club Meds in the 80's and had found it to be and excellent vacation for both the children and the parents. The parents get some time off since the children are all in their actvities groups, and the kids meet new friends and try new activities.

This Club Med has wonderful beaches, and excellent food for such a large group. The all inclusive arrangement makes each day much easier, and there are no big bill surprises at the end.Leo, who ran the dining room was delightful and efficient, and our consierge, Anne was extremely attentive and frienly. The service was superb and the people working were well trained and helpful at all times.

One caveat, our Iphones were stolen from the room, and we were foolish not to have put them in the safe, since one does not really need them on site. I recommend you put all electronics you bring in the safe in the room when not using them.

We will return, since everyone has good memories of a special vacation.

Room Tip: Rooms in the new sector share a private bar and pool, but cost more.

Travel dates: late January to mid-February 2012

LOVED the family suites! Good layout with central foyer and bedroom on either side. Shower off of foyer a bit strange but worked out fine. Nicely decorated, even if a bit sparse. The ocean views are to die for. Room service was very slow, especially since it is no longer free.

We got to know three GOs in the suites very well. Anne, Tanya, and Sonia were TERRIFIC. We miss them so much! Hats off to suite manager Vincent for assembling such a warm, capable group. We also appreciate the bartenders and pool staff in the Tiara area for their friendliness.

The evening cocktail reception at the suites is a wonderful, low key event. It was an enjoyable way to begin each evening. Other resorts mentioned a champagne reception as part of the suite experience, but this is the first time it was anything more than an open bar. It was a highlight of our trip.

FOOD at this resort was not as impressive as at Ixtapa, where we had gone the previous two years. There were some highlights, but overall the food lacked that extra something that makes it special. It was...okay. Service at the restaurants (like busing tables, getting more water, etc) was nearly non-existent. Yes, there are flies and birds in the restaurant near each meal's end, and they do get into the food. Yes, it is off-putting so go when the restaurants are crowded for the fewest number of pests. The floor in Hispaniola was amazingly slippery! The smooth tile, combined with inadequate cleaning, had people walking very cautiously--not what one wants to do on vacation!

Two of the three of us caught a GI bug that went through the club while we were there. I can't completely blame Club Med for this because it was likely caused by one of the many guests who failed to wash hands prior to arriving at the restaurant or after using the bathroom (disgusting! but I saw it sooooooo maaannnny times. Don't people wash their hands in France???) We noticed that Hispaniola restaurant did not have alcohol gel at one of the entrances, and often obscured the dispenser at the other entrance. For three days straight, that dispenser was empty anyway. I suggest you bring a bottle of alcohol gel to the restaurant and use some after each return from the buffet--no telling what is on those serving utensils....

I went SCUBA diving on five days through the on site provider. The scuba manager was a great guy--super nice--and the staff all quite friendly. There were reasonably cautious without being overbearing, even if things were often less organized than they would be at other places. I would dive with them again. Note that in winter there are strong winds and currents that often scuttle the dive trips. It took me nine days to get five trips completed.

KIDS CLUB, and Petite Club in particular, was a big disappointment. A few of the staff were quite attentive and energetic but most, including the manager, were better at smiling than actually working. Several times we saw the manager and staff standing around chatting with each other, looking at their cell phones, of just staring off into the distance when children or facilities were in obvious need of attention. After the third day of dropping off our crying daughter--she didn't like to spend time at Kids Club--and have the idle staff do absolutely nothing, we spoke to the manager. She acted shocked, appalled, completely flabbergasted, and then tried to deny our observations (so much for "the customer is always right.") It was not surprising that on one of those three days, the manager herself was one of those standing around doing nothing....

Another child in Petite Club--don't know his name but know he spoke French--stole my daughter's favorite rubber duck (and security object)--literally ripped it from her hands and hid it forever--and the staff knew nothing about it.

We're not sorry to admit that this Kids Club experience will have us vacationing at other resort chains from now on.

Condition of the resort is moderate. There were a few problems--shower that drained poorly even after two maintenance calls, flying insects swarming in our room on two occasions, and a virus on the in-room computer that stole my email password--but nothing dangerous. Virtually everything at this resort would benefit from more maintenance and upkeep.

If you go expecting a three-or-so star resort (remember: 4 Tridents = 2.5-3 stars), you won't be either impressed or disappointed. Don't look too closely at things and you will have a great time. And the views...they are spectacular!

Room Tip: Suites are quite expensive but if you are accustomed to 4-star (a.k.a. 5-Trident) rooms and concierg...

First time in Punta Cana took us by surprise...we didn't expect such a beatiful environment, seaside, beach and palms!!!!
Food was delicious and varied.
Place is huge but not crowded, beach is wonderful and you always can find a spot for yourself to mingle with others or to stay by yourself.
Tennis was great and enjoyed lessons with Nelson and Germaine.
Aquagym with Julie
thanks to all of you!

I went to Punta Cana and the best part of the trip was when we left. When we got there it was beutiful, then moments later, it turned into a pile of crap. The food is okay, besides the part it didn't even have food that kids or teenagers would enjoy besides the pizza, chicken tenders, fries, or the occasional extremely rare stake. But, besides that, the place would not fix our air conditioning the whole time we were there! The management sent people to the room and would say "sometimes you just have to fiddle with the 'mode' (of the a.c. controls) for a little while. I fixed it, it should be good in twenty minutes." I said okay after the first few then got fed up. I had to sleep ON THE FLOOR in the other room because it was so hot and stuffy and the other one. Did I mention that we purchased the nicest room and it had none of the items it said it would? What lastly ticked me off was the day we left we were supposed to call the receptionist and tell them to come pick up our luggage. They didn't answer. The phone rung about 150 times and they didn't answer. SO we had to walk the whole 1/2 mile carrying about 60 pounds of clothes, suitcases, backpacks, etc. I have to say that I did enjoy one thing. Their mango smoothies, which of course they ran out of after the first three days...

Room Tip: DON'T GO UNLESS YOU BUY A SUITE! (you can also get reservations at the buffet with this)
