Booked a family room at Iberostar Costa Dorada based on the reviews from TripAdvisor for the week of 14-21 July 2017. It was a great resort with great food, entertainment and service! We have been to a couple of resorts in Cuba (Royalton Hicacos and Oceans Varadero), this was our favorite of the 3. There is a lot of shade at the beach and the pool areas, the airport is only 20-25 minutes from the resort. We did the cable car excursion, it was good, long with no lunch option but full of things to see. We also did a snorkle with Dressell Divers- it was awesome, lots of colorful fish and friendly staff! We would go back with no hesitations!

My husband and I stayed at the iberostar costa dorada for two weeks at the end of June/beginning of July. We flew from Gatwick with Thomson on a flight which was 3 hours late taking off but only 2 hours late landing!

We have been to punta cana before and I just wanted to say how much better Puerto plata airport is. We were through immigration and customs in about 20 minutes and it was air conditioned inside, unlike our experience of waiting for nearly two hours in punta cana airport in a building with no air con!

We quickly found the rep (Silvia, who is also the rep at the iberostar) and soon we were on the coach ready to take the 20 minute transfer to the resort.

On arrival there was a bit of a wait to check in on account of a good number of Thomson guests wanting to check in. We were brought a welcome drink of a strawberry daiquiri whilst we waited, and once it was our turn to check in it was quick and efficient. Our bags were whisked off on a golf buggy and our concierge eddy walked us to our room whilst giving us good tips and advice about the resort and its facilities.

Our room was 7207, on the second floor (3rd floor if you're not British), which is the top level. We had a view over toward the orchid gardens and of lots of beautiful trees and a quiet and clean path only used occasional by the porters and mainly guests having a stroll through the beautiful grounds. The ground were lush and there was a variety of bird life (and quite a lot of insects too)

Our room was pretty much what we expected: a reasonably sized wardrobe containing the free safe, one side with shelves and one side for hanging clothes up: a desk/dresser, a fridge - the mini bar - stocked with five bottles of water a day, plus various soft drinks and two beers daily, a sofa, a coffee table and a giant bed! The air con worked but it never got that cold. We had bugs in our room a couple of times, a cockroach and a giant spider!

Food wise the hotel was good. There was always freshly grilled meat on offer, as well as a huge selection of salads, pizza, pasta, vegetables, burgers, hot dogs...the restaurant has theme nights each day...tex mex ended up being my favourite night, the ribs they served were huge and delicious! We ate and drank everything on offer and neither of us had any problems with sickness. The alcoholic drinks were all very nice too. It's a shame this hotel doesn't have an indoor bar with proper air conditioning. The two main restaurants and all the bars are open around the sides with fans in the ceiling, which meant you couldn't escape the humidity in them. The mexican and japanese restaurants were 'closed' to the elements though and a lot more comfortable temeprature! We tried all three of the a la cartes: the mexican was very very salty! The brazillian was fine but was a total meat feast with skewers of meat being brought round to you (they also brought out prawns which i was really looking forward to but couldn't eat as they hadn't been cleaned properly). The Japanese was the nicest food but was pretty standard tepanyaki show cooking...if you have stayed at any other chain hotel with a Japanese restaurant you will probably all ready know all the jokes and tricks they do!

We spent most of our days around the pool. It was hard to get served at the pool bar sometimes, but the smaller snack restaurant next to the pool (which becomes the brazillian restaurant at night) had a bar which we ordered from instead. The beach was nice but it got very windy most afternoons! There is a coral reef just a few steps out into the sea so borrow a snorkel from the watersports centre and have a look! The pool is in desparate need of refurbishment with lots of cracked tiles and it wasn't always the cleanest.

Overall we really did enjoy our stay here, but there were things that would help the hotel improve.
- Every day cups ran out in the snack restaurant by the pool, maybe staff could be more proactive in making sure these are stocked instead of waiting until they run out.
- Soda often ran out at the self service drinks station in the snak bar and the pool bar ran out of soft drinks at one point too!
- Running out of plates in the buffet when it was busy
- All the small dessert plates being hot from the washer which made the beautiful puddings that should have been served cold, warm.
- They really REALLY need covers for the dessert trays in the snack restaurant. Every day it was a battle between the birds flying in and helping themselves and the staff who would try and shoo them away. Seriously, don't eat pudding or fruit from the poolside restaurant unless you don't mind them being bird pecked. We also saw birds poop on the buffet counters more than once...gross! I understand you can't control nature but getting covers for this section of the buffet would surely discourage the birds from trying!

My only other gripe is that there is a lack of plug sockets in the rooms, so bring an multiway adaptor if you have space. We had to take turns in charging our phones.

If you go to this hotel with an open mind and just wanting to enjoy the sunshine and the laid back dominican atmosphere you will have an great time, just don't expect perfection! We would consider returning but only if we could get a very good deal.

Top notch Resort with professional staff, great beach, pool, activities, food selection, spa and entertainment. Well manicured landscaping.
Sexi Papa' ,who works in the Activities department, is friendly, welcoming and a VERY hard worker. Sexi Papa' works non-stop from am to the late hours and always with a smile on his face. Our trip would not have been as fabulous without him.
All staff cater to guests without overwhelming them.

The hotel and staff is fabulous. The food we found to be very good. The wine, for all inc, was drinkable but they only pour 3cm of it in your glass. We would order 4 glasses of wine and pour them into 2 glasses. Tip well and the staff go the extra mile for you.
The beach was nice but the 'market' up the beach was a bit scary. We walked up there with our young children. It wasn't very good and didn't feel safe. We left after they tried to charge us £25 for a necklace made from a shoe lace.
We didn't venture out of the hotel as it didn't feel very safe and there wasn't anywhere to go, as far as we knew.
The restaurants were all very good. We loved the Brazilian one on the beach, lovely food.
The pool is ginormous and was freezing cold. It didn't warm up at all and that was the only down side. I literally jumped in to cool down and got straight out. The entertainment round the pool was hilarious, we don't normally partake but we did this holiday and we won lots of prizes.
The entertainment team work so hard, they deserve a mention. They're all very funny, friendly and made the holiday one to remember.
The rooms are comfortable and cool. The showers are lovely and powerful.
The grounds are beautiful. We loved the peacocks strolling round.
All in all a lovely hotel and lovely staff.

The prime example of the good service can be summed up in a bowl of rice: When my traveling companion got water in her cell phone, she requested rice to draw it out. She returned to the room with a big bowl of rice given to her from the kitchen. Little kindnesses make a big difference.

I did find that making reservations for excursions was more successful when I did so on sight at the resort rather than from the U.S.

Room tip: Enjoyed our ocean view.
