This an update I have received from a friend who works at Los Delpines over the past week post Irma. The resort took many precautions to reduce damage, and removed the canvas covering walkways, palapas stored up against the lee side of the restaurant building. The biggest casualty was the loss off the large tree shading the lobby bar patio. The lobby bar pictures she sent showed it filled with tables, speakers, canvas but the building appears otherwise intact. Staff are working to remove sand from buildings and walkways. Many trees around the resort are damaged and stripped of leaves and fronds. The road way between the pool and lobby bar been totally covered in sand, and concrete hydro poles were tilted precariously. We hope to visit again in November.

We stayed 2 weeks July 7-21st. This was our 7th time staying at this resort in as many years. We are starting to notice the hotel is working on its image the best it can. upgrades to the buffet area and bar area were nice to see. We have had many different rooms during our visit and as a rule they have been clean and maintained as much as can be expected. Our last room was an ocean view over the lobby bar. Yes the toilet plugged up 3 times during our stay, but we simply flagged down the maintenance guy, he gave it a plunge and away we went. (Can happen anywhere). The only down fall is if you like to retire early the entertainment is right below you at night. The buffet has come along way over the years. Gee ( buffet manager) has and is working hard to provide a good variety of food. While my wife and I are not really picky eaters my wife is a celiac and she never had any issues finding something at every sitting that worked for her. Since we were down for 2 weeks we did eat at a couple of local restaurant's and because of the hotels location they can be found very close by. We did venture out to the casa de la musica one evening with a local friend and the dancing and bands until 4am was a real experience! (Thx Yailin!) Pedro and his animation crew keep things entertaining and up beat.
Staff- here are our thoughts. They are all very interesting and unique people. From day one we made a point of getting to know everyone and over the years have tried to learn more Spanish every year.(Why should one expect them to speak fluent English?) Everyone working there from the receptionist, bar tenders, maids and security guards, are all willing to help you out when needed and share a laugh.
To sum it up the beach is magnificent, the hotel is small (102 rooms I believe), close to everything down town, and an amazing staff. If you want a very nice relaxing vacation give the Delfines a try, and enjoy your vacation. FYI they came thru IRMA with very minimal damage. Glad to hear!

Great price for June - $450 and change - each for hotel and airfare - one week.

This is an older 3 story resort located in the centre of town. No elevators - so be prepared to to climb.

Food was relatively the same daily; however, we ventured out to the local neighbourhood and found a couple really nice restaurants for good inexpensive meals.

Try La Vicari - great food.

June is a slow month there as it is HOT.
The locals use the resort as a holiday destination.

Rooms were clean, well maintained. Clean towels, bedding. Beds relatively comfortable.

Spent lots of time at the beach swimming and reading - beach well maintained and clean, beach chairs and thatched sun shades available. Get them early.

Do take advantage of the horse and buggy ride later at night when it is cooler. It's a great view of the town night life.

If you are looking for something quiet this time of year (meaning June) it's something to consider.

We traveled on a budget and were not planning to stay at hotels at all but were more or less forced to take a room at the hotel as everywhere else was busy or more expensive. We could only get an all inclusive room which in the end wasn't so bad. The food was good and there was quite a lot of choice for breakfast and dinner, loads of fruit which suited me perfectly in that heat.
However, I was very disappointed with the room; there was sand all over the floor and that was when we just got to the hotel, so it wasn't us that dragged it in from the beach. The fridge broke in the middle of the night with a really loud bang that made me think someone was trying to break in and there was a huge puddle of water (fridge freezer, ice defrosted).
The hotel is right on the beach; it took us one minute from the room. Then again, Varadero is very narrow and the farthest you can be from the beach is about 10 mins walk
