“A Treasure Trove of Outstanding Cuban Art”
Reviewed 23 February 2012

Truly Outstanding Collection of Beautiful, Provocative and Daring Cuban Art. Would have preferred more explanatory materials in English(primarily Spanish) on the artists and their works. The building was under renovations when we visited. The Museum shop on the ground floor was a little basic. If you are an Art Lover, this is highly recommended

“Wonderful collection of Cuban Art”
Reviewed 22 February 2012

The Museo Nacional Bellas Artes is actually two buildings, the museum of modern Cuban art (the modern building right behind the Museum of the Revolution) and the historic Arte Universal at Parque Centro. You can see both for 8 CUCs or separately for 5 CUCs each.

If you've seen the great museums of Europe, the historic Arte Universal is only interesting for the gorgeous interior, which you are allowed to photograph (you cannot photograph the art). If you haven't seen the museums of Europe then the museum offers a selection of historic arts from ancient Greece and Egypt, and a large selection of paintings from historic Europe.

If your taste trends toward modern art, as mine does, then the real gem is the museum of modern Cuban art where you will find simply wonderful works of sculpture, painting, ceramic arts, and so on. Cuban produces some really exceptional artists including my now new favourite artist, Pedro Pablo Oliva, whose whimsical works in oil and ceramics were the best of the museum. So stunning in fact that when I later stumbled upon an affordable Oliva lithograph at the Nelson gallery off Plaza San Francisco I bought it immediately. Oliva has a website so you can see his work online.

As with the Artes Universal you cannot photograph the artworks except the sculptures on display around the first floor courtyard.

“Only did the Cuban Art section”
Reviewed 14 February 2012

Worth the admission price. The older artwork has more appeal than some of the modern stuff. Signage was essentially Spanish so it makes it a little tough if your language skills are weak
