“A grand dining experience”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 21 February 2012

Located in a quiet run down street, this restaurant is a gem. The restored mansion fitted out with personal memorabilia provides an ambience that is both opulent and uniique. We found the food average, but the owner chef is a good host and has ability to make guests feel important. There is live music, conducive for a romantic evening out. Recommended

“Beautiful Oasis in a not so nice street”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 14 February 2012

My husband and I had a fantastic meal here on 28th January after not being able to get into La Guarida. The food and service was impeccable. The menu was totally in Spanish and one of the waiters did a great job translating it for us. We had the tapas starter, fillet steak with mashed potato (hard to find potatoes in Cuba) and vegetables and dessert - and a bottle of wine. The bill came to 65 CUC - around £44 which was unbelievably cheap given the quality of the food and the whole dining experience. Wonderful ecclectic rooms full of artefacts. Very unique in an area that goes from one extreme to the other. We walked there during the day just to find where it was and to see if we would need a taxi to get there in the evening. It was very intimidating walking down there in the day - lots of hassle from the locals - so we took a taxi both ways. The paladar organized the return taxi to our hotel in a 50's classic American car. The whole evening was a wonderful experience. We have eaten at many top restaurants around the world and this was up there with the best of them!

“A wonderful experience”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 10 February 2012

Enjoyed a wonderful meal here, in one of the large beautifully appointed rooms, in an early 20th century mansion. The waiters were very charming and patient with us, explaining the various dishes on the (Spanish only) menu. Dinner for 3 with wine about $90. Chef Carlos came by later in the evening to greet all the customers. A nice touch. Reservations necessary.

“Setting the Bar for Havana Paladares”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 8 February 2012

After hearing all the good things about paladar San Cristobal on Trip Advisor, it was a must for my next trip to Havana.

I made a reservation on a Saturday afternoon in early February for the same night at 7PM. We walked along San Rafeal from Prado. The sun had set and it was just starting to get dark when we reached the paladar.

The venue was an old colonial style home. There was a narrow open air courtyard with a couple of tables that could accommodate 2 or 3 people each. There were two rooms inside with multiple tables in each. Our party of 4 was seated at a large table with big velvet chairs at the front of the house.

We started off with the "Mezedes de la casa" ($6) and bread & butter for four people ($2 each). The appie included:

-shrimp and calamari ceviche
-white fish ceviche
-olives
-smoked salmon
-cured ham (like a prosciutto but sliced thicker)
-bite sizes pieces of scallop potatoes
-variety of cheeses (including blue)
-type of croquette, deep fried with a batter
-sweet caramelized onions, like a chutney.

Appies were really good except the ham had some fat in it that made it too chewy.

For mains we ordered:

-Lonjas de cerado la campesina (pork loin in jus for $7)
-Fish with orange sauce ($10)
-Shrimp skewer ($10)
-veg rotini/fusilli (not on the menu $12).

Protein mains were a la cart and a good size for one person (no sharing), the pasta was in a massive bowl and could have been shared. For sides we ordered rice with black beans and puréed (mashed) potatoes that were pan fried to give them a crispy exterior. The pork loin is now one of my top 5 pork dishes. The tangy white wine jus with julienned peppers and onions had great flavour. The server said it was a "very cuban" dish and It was awesome! Shrimps were good, fish was cooked well but I personally don't dig on the orange sauce. Pasta was ok with a tomato sauce and veggies, but I like my tomato sauce with a kick (hot chilies). We had both the house red and white wines for dinner. Stick to bottles if you're a connoisseur.

We ordered one desert to share. A salty cheese with a sweet an firm fruit jelly (guava I think). The sweet and salty flavours complemented each other well.

After dinner we received complementary glasses of Havana club añejo especial, and robusto cigars. My cigar had a mild flavour and good draw. This must be standard at San Cristobal, and was a nice touch that sets the bar above the other nice paladares I have visited.

Service was great. Our waiter spoke English when we needed it.

We had 6 drinks between us (not including comped rums) and the bill came to $80 without tip.

San Cristobal is the best paladar I have experienced in Havana. Highly recommended! Order the Lonjas de cerado la campesina!

“Make a reservation”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 7 February 2012

My wife and I walked there expecting to walk in and it was closed, we were very disappointed. Reading these recent reviews it appears a reservation is essential because as noted it is in a very unlikely area and probabley opens with reservations only
