To the environs of Havana city, nice place to be in the capital but not necessary in the busy city, just around 45 minutes to havana.
Located in the Santa Maria del Mar beach area and beside of the other famous beach the cuban people Bacuranao beach.

Spent seven days at the hotel. Chose the hotel because of its location - beach was just across the street. Beach was however quiet most times. Would have loved to have more music to dance to when not in the water. Hotel did not fall below my expectation of a two-star status. Though, it was all-inclusive, meal was neither special nor bad. Staff were friendly (from receptionist, to hotel securities, to restaurant/entertainment staff) except the DJ who refused to play a song I specifically requested. LOL (I didn't take it personal though) It was a "Sango" song (Afro-Cuban). Every other thing was good. I didn't mind the AC, natural air was good for me during the day, night time - the AC worked fine. One or two bed bugs, but who cares!...i killed one of them before it bit me. The other? left it to go tell the story to others who might be tempted to come. lol
As per tourist, met some amazing people who made my stay worthwhile! Ali especially, a grandfather who had a young heart - made us laugh out loud most of the time.
Free shuttle buses in the morning and evening to pick you to and from Havana, if you wanted to get to the old Havana. Taxis right in front of the hotel to take you to El Cubano bar at Guanabo if you feel like moving your body to some electrifying Spanish dance-hall songs. However, be aware of 'Chikas'.
Overall, I had a good time. Would go back again if opportune.

Visited Tropicoco with my 16 year old son during March break. Unfortunately the weather was horrible the entire time we were there. Overcast, chilly, high winds and frequent drizzle so we could not really enjoy the beach, although we did go for walks every day. The hotel however was wonderful. I loved the retro Soviet design and the entire building was so quirky that it took us all week to figure it out. There is a fabulous patio, comfortable pool area with bar and snacks, and extensive lobby areas on multiple floors where people actually hang out and socialize! The location is wonderful, busses and taxis to downtown always available, beach is across a street but still closer to the hotel than many resorts I've stayed in. Our room was basic but the beds were comfy, bathroom was nice, view was great, everything worked and our maid was amazing. Only thing I would add is a fridge in the room. In fact everyone who worked there did above and beyond, friendly, helpful, caring and competent. And unlike other Cuban experiences, no one asked for a tip (this even extends to tours, bus drivers and other service people in downtown Havana). Of course, one does tip. Especially if you ate Canadian! There are some small shops close to the hotel, you can get liquor, tobacco, snacks, souvenirs, clothes etc. They will exchange money at the lobby and I strongly advise bringing cash because going to a Cuban bank or cadeca is not pleasant but if you want to get the best rate that would be your best bet. The food at the buffet is good, particularly whatever they are cooking on the grill. Lots of choices of vegetables, fresh fish every day, I found the best option is to stick to the simplest things. That said it is not a 5 star resort so nothing fancy, but fresh and usually good. All the bars are great, at any they will go out of their way to concoct you something amazing, then next morning make you an espresso. The bar at the beach is basically a shack on the path. There's a sign that says beer costs one CUC, but it is included, the menu prices are for people not staying at the Tropicoco. There are dedicated lounge chairs on the beach and guys selling coco frio con ron. Get one! There is a fabulous outdoor restaurant about a block away to the right. Best burgers in Cuba, freshest seafood I've ever had and very friendly and accommodating staff. If you go in the evening & the gate is shut just ask them & they'll let you in. I would like to especially recommend Reuben at the lobby bar, but ALL of the staff at the Tropicoco are brilliant. I have heard this establishment has been bought and will soon be converted to 5 star resort, so I strongly recommend going soon.

Stayed: March 2017
