if you are going to Havana in any area, it is very worth it to take the shuttle bus to the beaches. The bus is 3$ for the whole day and it will drop you off at a couple of stops but most people get off at the tropicoco hotel stop.
there should be a shuttle every 30 minutes (check the schedule on the bus stop) and you can take the shuttle from old Havana.

take the first or last stop with the touristbus that leaves in front of hotel inglaterra. The 2nd stop is a big hotel and only nice for people who want to be entertained. No toilets on the beaches. And don't count on the bus to have a regular schedule, some people said they waited an hour. Taxi from havana is 30 cuc so if you can share one....

For a 3 CUC bus ride from Parque Central the 30 minute bus ride to the Playas de Este is worth while. Get off at the last stop. Fine little restuarnt at the stop . Great Pizza. The walk up the small sand hill and the beach. Just the palm trees on the beach make it better than the barren beaches of Varadero. Here you can rent a lounge chair for 2cuc and there is a great little snack bar. We loved it.!

I love to relax with a good book while I drink the water from the coconut mixed with rum ... I forgot the name of the drink, but you have to try it! (they will pour as much rum as you want inside the coconut). I enjoyed staying at the beach of Tropicoco Hotel. I also stayed at the beach of Hotel Atlantico and I had the chance to walk all the way to MiCayito beach (GLBTQ spot). MiCayito beach is a bit far and a bit isolated during the week. The places I would recomend to stay are the beaches of Hotel Atlantico or Hotel Tropicoco. However, be aware that if you buy your lunch at the beach it will be more expensive. If you decided to stay at the beach of Hotel Tropicoco, you can also eat lunch bufete at the hotel for about 12 CUC (one lunch at the beach will be about the same or more expensive). Also, don't leave your belongings unattended, but try to have your chair close to other tourists chairs. The chair and sombrilla are about 1 CUC each for the entire day. Here are some of my clips of Playas del Este and enjoy your coconut drinks!
