TOURIST TRAP!!
First of all, the lobster for lunch during the $170 tour wasn’t even close to be half of 3 1/2. It was smaller. Salad was poor and rice cold and clearly from a pre-made pot. The fact that I had to pay an extra U$10 for the lobster makes me boil my blood.
Second, we spent more time on the car rather than a single place. I came here to visit Barbuda’ sites not the car. If there’s a limited time because the ferry leaves at 15:45pm (something you shadily never mention anywhere in your marketing site) then it’s obvious not everything can be done. We literally spent 10min in the bird sanctuary!
Thirdly, no one explained us anything about the island, its history, the birds, or its tragic past like the hurricane in 2017. I’ve never been to a tour before that they literally explain NOTHING. I would have rather paid someone half the extra money to tour me around and I would have not been rushed up as we were.
Fourthly, we came to the whatf 30min before the ferry time at 15:45h and even there we had to sit inside the car for almost 1h. Very bad organized that there
Is zero communication with the ferry considering this is the same company. We could have stayed more time on the beach instead we were in the car for all that time.
To top it up, the fact that not even the park fees are included for 10min that we spent there it’s outrageous.
I understand the difficulties the island is having but I have been to other places that have been hit equally as bad (for example Samoa with a tsunami in 2019) and I was beyond pleased. I really think this is a tourists trap.
We didn’t have a good time at all for the tour “Whole Experience Tour”
First of all, you should warn people that can get sea sick as the ferry journeys are very rough. My partner and I spent the the whole 1h30 trip to Barbuda being very sea sick. Some other passengers were sick too.
Second, we didn’t appreciate spending the majority of the time in the small and claustrophobic van driving by Henri. It takes for ever to drive on the island due to poor road conditions. We didn’t understand for example the purpose of visiting the cave then drive from one side of the other (45 min) without stopping at the pink sand beach : the must-see thing to see in Barbuda.
Third, I personally didn’t appreciate that the entry price for the bird sanctuary suddenly went up when we were paying. It was supposed to be US$5 per person. I ended up paying almost US$20 for 2 people.
Finally, the ferry to Barbuda departed with 1h delay. We then had to speed up the entire tour in order to not miss the ferry back. A very speedy and looks like being on a “school trip” experience.
Overall, a very poor experience.
poor value for a lot of money
transfers to and from st johns to your resort not inclusive
4 hour round trip to/from barbuda on a commercial ferry catamaran
too much travel on island on a horrendous road
lunch is just adequate
drinks, sunbeds at diana beach not inclusive
tax payable after bird sancuary visit
bird sanctuary is excellent
pink beach and diana beach gorgeous
The Barbuda express leaves from the bottom of High street (next to heritage quay). I understand that the journey is supposed to take about 1hr 30, but for us it was 2hrs on the way out and 1hr 45 on the way back. To be honest it is a long way to go in open water and can be difficult for people who get sea sick because you spend most of the time side on to the waves, which causes a lot of rocking and some big drops.
But it is worth it for the rest of the tour. Note: you will need to pay tax on top of your ticket price which is $7 US per person (or around $19 EC). I would also wear trainers or sandals with straps.
Once on the other side you’ll get picked up and driven to some smaller speed boats which will take you into the mangroves where the frigate birds nest. When we went the adult males (which have the red sack) had already migrated leaving begins the females and young. I think the best time would be go during breeding season (which I understand is mid-December to April).
Once you’ve taken the speedboat through the mangroves you stop of at one of the most secluded and beautiful beaches I have ever seen. With hints of pink in the sand and turquoise water, it is stunning and great for a swim to cool off, before getting back in the boat and heading for land.
The next stop is the caves, it is a bit of long car journey on bumpy dusty roads, and the caves where a bit underwhelming. Quite shallow, they are mostly open, but there is a nice “path” up to the top where you can see out over the ocean. I say “path”, it is steep and rocky, but luckily short, I would definitely wear trainers or sandals with straps.
After the caves you stop for a nice meal of rice, salad and chicken, fish or vegetables (you place your order before you go). Before continuing on to Diana beach, which is beautiful and a great place to cool down and relax in the sea. Finally you get back on the boat to St John’s
If it wasn’t for the long choppy boat ride I would recommend it to everyone. But if you get through that bit, I think you’ll be pleasantly surprised and enjoy seeing the beauty in Barbuda.
I just did a review of this tour under Barbuda Express, but overall this was a great trip. Well organized and well executed.
The ferry ride is long about 1 hr & 50 min, and it's an approx. 25 mile ride of open ocean, with waves from 5 feet to 12 feet the whole trip so if you are not accustomed to riding on small (approx. 50ft) boats, its rough.
Otherwise I'd suggest reading my review on Barbuda Express itself, but it was such a great event.
We’ve been staying in Antigua over the UK Winter, but had not been to Barbuda. I read the reviews, and was prepared for a ‘so-so’ trip....but this day out was well worth it.
Yes, the ferry boarding was a bit delayed due to 2 cruise liners docking and a full ferry boat with all the stuff people were taking for work and home, but I loved the 2 hour ride ( yes, a bit rock and roll but that doesn’t bother me or my husband).
We were met at the dock by Cool Cat and his mini van, and taken to the fishing dock for our short boat ride to see the frigate birds. Cool Cat was informative and friendly all the time and answered ours ( plus 3 others doing the tour) constant stream of questions regarding the 2017 hurricane, rebuilding, people on the Island etc). It was interesting to see the lagoon in which the frigate birds live, and I never I imagined we could get so close to them. Amazing! Then a short trip to the lovely pink sandy beach for a quick swim before we heard back to Cool Cat. The rest of the day was taken up with visiting the limestone rocks on the eastern side of the island and seeing the wonderful views up and down the coastline, having a fabulous lunch at Hillside View cafe ( my husband had a whole lobster and all the trimming and I had a wonderful fish called a Trigger which I’d not had before), visiting the cave that Cool Cat has made for himself in the rocks, and then on for a long swim at the beautiful Princess Diana beach, before returning for the 15:45 ferry.
All in all a great day out that I can recommend to anyone wanting to see and enjoy Barbuda. It really needs the tourism after so much destruction and then COVID.
