“The most perfect honeymoon in paradise!”
Reviewed 29 February 2012

We spent 7 nights at Crown Beach Resort for our honeymoon in February 2012. We absolutely loved our time at this resort with only positive comments to be made. The staff were so friendly, helpful & professional. Our villa, right on the beach was beautiful with attentive room service & I particularly loved the "turn down fairies!" Highly recommend this resort to all.

Kia Orana,

Thank you for your kind words about your recent stay at Crown Beach Resort & Spa.

We are pleased to read that you loved your stay in our Beachfront Spa Villas, right on the beach, just a few steps away from the warm blue lagoon. We are pleased to read that you found our staff of 85 Cook Islanders to be friendly, helpful and professional.

Our turn down 'fairies' continue to apply their magic to all our villas and suites with romance candles, flowers and more.

Thank you for choosing to stay at Crown Beach Resort & Spa. We hope to see you again, soon.

Crown Beach Resort is a medium size (yet boutique-y) resort at the west coast of Rarotonga. We stayed for eight nights in one of the pool suites. In addition to breakfast, we also had some lunches and dinners at Oceans Restaurant.

Our villa was tastefully decorated and practical, always spotlessly clean and a pleasure to be in. The mattresses are, I hate to say it, even more comfortable than at home. The pool suites have their own private courtyard, complete with gazebo, palm tree, comfortable outside furniture and a small pool – perfect.

The staff at the reception are exceedingly welcoming, knowledgeable and always helpful and accommodating. We were looked after even after checking out and until the moment we left the premises: waiting around for our airport transfer we were kindly offered something to drink and a piece of cake! The maintenance and gardening guys deserve praise too. Not only did they always have a friendly word; the door to our courtyard got fixed within 30 minutes of our reporting the faulty lock to the reception. We were not sure about the concierge though; I would expect that in his role he should be aware of guided walking tours in the (only) nature reserve on Rarotonga but we ended up organising this tour ourselves.

The food at Oceans Restaurant was of good quality, especially the breakfasts, and served by well-meaning, very friendly staff of sometimes differing degrees of professionalism. For example, somebody might drop them a word that wine glasses are not usually filled to the brim. But, in the big scheme of things, this is minor and we had a positive overall impression of Oceans Restaurant. The views are beautiful too.

The island night (Thursdays) at the resort night was fantastic, by far the best show we saw on the island, accompanied by a buffet of local food. There is a lot of skilfully cooked seafood on Raro and the ika mata and tuna steaks served during the event here were no exception.

There seem to be mixed opinions on the quality of snorkelling on Raro generally and Crown Beach in particular, so here’s our experience. In addition to the beach at the resort we snorkelled at Titikaveka, Black Rock and Muri beaches as well as in the Aitutaki lagoon but here’s the thing: The most colourful and plentiful fish were to be seen at the resort beach. The water was totally clear (at least a few hours on either side of low tide) and, though not deep, deep enough to snorkel comfortably. Aitutaki scored with regard to picturesque sandbanks, fewer coral stones on the beach and giant clams but overall we enjoyed snorkelling at Crown Beach most.

We look forward to coming back one day. Thanks again to all the team at the resort for a memorable stay!

Room Tip: The courtyard pool suites are perfect but some of the other villas appeared to be under renovation s...

Kia Orana,

Thank you for your kind words about your recent stay at Crown Beach Resort & Spa.

We are pleased to read that you loved your 8-night stay in our ultra private Courtyard Pool Suites with private swimming pool and outdoor dining gazebo. We are equally pleased to read that you rate our king size beds as 'better than at home'.

Our front office team (like all other teams within the resort) are focused on memorable guest experiences. It is our in-house policy to extend our warm Polynesian hospitality to you until you depart the Cook Islands. The small gesture of a complimentary beverage and cake while you wait for your airport transfer late at night is 'standard' departure protocol for us.

Our three restaurants continue to evolve and refine as they roll out new cuisine options that merge island style and continental options. Some of our service staff at Oceans Restaurant, though genuine and well meaning, do make small mistakes as they take on their first meaningful form of employment in their lives. Give them time, they will become excellent ambassadors of the Cook Islands people & culture.

Thank you for your positive comment about our Island Nights on Mon + Thu with island inspired buffets with over 30 options, culminating in a vibrant, pulsating cultural show presented by Rarotonga's top cultural dance troupes. The Thursday show is indeed vibrant with colourful costumes, unique choreography, pulsating drums and the awe-inspiring fire knife dancers from the island of Pukapuka.

Thank you for your review of Rarotonga's snorkelling spots. I have to agree with you that the stretch of lagoon from Crown Beach Resort & Spa to the Edgewater Resort is a marine reserve which guarantees snorkellers close up views of amazing soft coral and colourful reef fish.

All in all, we are so pleased to read that you loved the beautiful island of Rarotonga and we hope to see you again, soon.

Best wishes,

Stayed for 5 nights in a beachfront villa and loved every second of it. Staff were amazingly freindly and helpful, the grounds were immaculate and being situated directly on the beach. Great snorkelling just metres from your door was a real treat. Only minor gripe was the housekeeping as they tend to reuse sheets unless requested otherwise. Still, a great holiday and we are looking forward to coming back again!

Room Tip: Villa 1 is perfect, closest to the beach and the most distant from the Oceans bar if you want the ad...

My husband and I both agreed that this was one of the best hotel rooms we've stayed in (and we've stayed in many around the world) - private pool and waterfall and a very spacious room. The happy hour is great, on an island where happy hours are hard to come by. The resort is also decent, but nothing incredibly fancy. We were pleasantly surprised by the great food at the restaurants. The housekeeping, on the other hand, is terrible, and brings the rating down from five stars to four. Don't expect the towels, sheets, or toiletries to be replaced (even if you ask twice), or the room to be tidied. I've had better housekeeping at Motel 6 in the States. Once this resort gets its housekeeping in order, it will be a really fantastic place to stay.

We are pleased to read that you loved the ultra private Courtyard Pool Suite complete with private pool and outdoor dining gazebo. We are also pleased to read that you loved the daily triple happy hour program (12noon, 4pm, 9.30pm) where you buy 1 drink and get 1 absolutely free!

We are pleased to read that you were 'pleasantly surprised' by the quality of our cuisine in our three restaurants: Windjammer, Tang Tapas and Oceans Bistro. We are pleased to advise that we will soon open our 4th bar on the beach, Jandals Bar; as well as our new restaurant & bar in downtown Avarua: Mama's Cafe. We cant wait.

We apologise for the housekeeping issues that you endured. Our Housekeeping Manager has corrected problems to ensure they dont happen again. Thank you for bringing them to our attention.

Positives:
Gardens, view, set up, food, most of the staff, pool, snorkelling equipment, beds, villa spacious, air con, info.

Improvements:
Didnt like waiting for Captain Tama's bus on roadside when all other hotels got picked up from reception, bus was half an hour late, luckily it wasnt raining. Didnt feel very special when we were really excited about the day.
Event organiser/coordinator person very aloof, did not acknowledge us at all during our 6 day stay. Rude and needs to know what excellent customer service is. Ruined it for all the other staff that went out of their way to offer top service.
A lot of the gym equipment did not work and many times there were no towels in the gym. Always the excuse that housekeeping did not replenish (gets a bit tedious after a while)
Stayed in Villa 9, did not mind at all it being near the restaurant but contractor van parked directly outside our back door on 3 mornings, noisey and workmen walking back and forth past our bedroom windows. He should have parked further down the driveway. Kitchen staff smoking and resting outside kitchen right near our bedroom window, no privacy. Tarpaulin outside back door kitchen. Generally need to either cover this area off so it looks better and provides privacy to Villa 9. Roof not entirely thatched.
Sky TV reception very poor and DVD hired damaged. Hopeless quality.
Expensive Internet
Bathroom floor saturated from shower as no door, just a shower curtain.
Back door very difficult to open and shut, needed to use the tap to wash sand off our feet.
Should have offered some warning that it wasnt safe to swim in the lagoon, too much hidden coral near the shore, got cut up. Ended up swimming in Muri lagoon after that.
Should have been advised that there was wedding booked Saturday, took up the beach front, felt like we couldnt use the beachfront.

Whilst we didnt let these things upset or ruin our well earned holiday with our son, thought you need to know what we experienced.
First time visitors to Rarotonga, stay was ok but we wanted the wow island experience.Wont stay again at Crown Beach!

Room Tip: Villa 9 needs some improvement, rating 5 out of 10

Kia Orana,

Thank you for your feedback about your recent stay at Crown Beach Resort & Spa.

All the points that you have raised about Villa 9 have been noted into our refurbishment plans which will come into effect early March 2012. Specifically, we will be installing a brand new bathroom with twin showers, wall to wall marble, twin vanities, new toilet, washing machine/dryer; we will instal a new swimming pool in the closed off courtyard area next to the decking; we will erect a high-fenced off area to give more privacy around the bedrooms and more. The new look Villa 9 will be absolutely stunning and ready to go by the 1st April 2012.

Our sales/events coordinator was not intentionally unfriendly, he had a lot of events scheduled for the week (and months to come) and sincerely apologises for any misconceptions exhibited by his demeanor.

The faulty gym equipment has been transferred to the maintenance shed for repairs; housekeeping have been tasked to step up their service rounds to ensure fresh towels are available, round the clock.

Television reception is indeed hazy and will soon be replaced by new media players with hard-drives programmed with complimentary entertainment options. Internet connections are expensive, islandwide, and is controlled by Telecom Cook Islands/New Zealand. We merely beam signals via our wifi system.

The Saturday wedding ceremony on the beach area directly in front of Oceans Restaurant lasted a couple of hours and the beach area was reset for regular service shortly after. All other resort beachfront areas were available for a beach experience without any interruption. The Oceans Restaurant team promoted 'restaurant closure' on the beach black board and should have personally advised you during breakfast service that they were closed for a private event later in the day. If I recall correctly, it was blowing a strong westerly gale, with periodic rain showers and the seas were extremely rough.

All in all, we are truly sorry you we did not deliver the island experience you were after and we hope you continue to holiday on beautiful Rarotonga.

Best wishes,

Rohan Ellis
