We visited all the lodging options in and near Sequoia National Park, except one which was closed, and they are very few. Only this one includes your meals in the price. And the food was not just the hot dog/burger/fries junk, but really well cooked, tasty, and with several choices at each meal. You can make a sandwich for your day's outing in the morning. Compare this to the other lodgings and you will find that they are much more expensive when you factor in the ultra-pricey food they offer (you are trapped; Sequoia area has NO restaurants outside the hotels, just snack bars and markets with pricey offerings). There are a wide variety of lodgings (we had a hotel-style room in the main lodge), some more expensive than what we had because they sleep 4 to 6 people. The New Forest Cabins are really beautiful although the view from their elegant decks are not great and need some landscaping. Note that there is a 10-week period in the summer when this place offers a total camp experience for kids, and that might be a bad time to go if you are looking for peace and quiet. Spring and Fall are better anyway -- summers there are HOT!

720warrenw,

Thank you so much for acknowledging our kitchen staff, and making visitors aware that we are offering tasty and well-cooked meals during this challenging time during the pandemic! We appreciate that you also pointed out that other options in the parks were limited and expensive, and not included in the hotel rates, whereas we have always included meals and more in our rates.

We hope you come back again and visit us when we can really shine when things are more back to normal.

Until then, happy travels 720warrenw and we hope to see you again!

Appreciatively,
T. Dally

Please be advised that I did my research prior to booking this place for our family of 4, read the negative reviews and adjusted my expectations and did not expect a Hilton experience. When we arrived in our room we found a bathtub with a dead field mouse and mouse feces scattered over the tub. We had to tell the front desk twice to remove the dead mouse. When we first told the staff about the dead mouse, two hours later it was still there. The food is an abomination. We paid close to $600 for a two night stay because it was all inclusive and included meals, after eating the first meal we knew we were in trouble. The next time we stay at the Sequoias we will use a campsite and bring our own tents and food.

Room tip: Stay if you have no other option and you are desperate

Dear West-East-Prices,

Please accept my sincere apologies about the mouse in your room. This is a very rare occurrence, but we are in the middle of the wilderness and occasionally a mouse can make its way into some of our older "vintage" rooms or cabins. I'd recommend our new Forest Cabins or Lakeview Suites for the benefit of new/more airtight construction for those who are squeamish.

Please know that we do have a regular extermination service and we have informed them of this incident after reading your review. If you look back in our reviews, there have been very few complaints about rodents, but, as I said, they are crafty critters and can squeeze through a hole as small as a pencil eraser.

I certainly understand why this set a poor tone for your stay, and, again, I personally apologize to you and your family.

In terms of our food, we are very proud of our staff for completely overhauling our food service to meet covid-safe protocols. We usually serve our food buffet style, which allows our guests to have much more choice than we can currently offer during the pandemic. Serving cafeteria-style has made our food service require more staff, but I would like to mention that we are serving many more options currently than the other park lodges (who have extremely limited menus and service). We apologize that the food was not to your personal liking, but many of our guests are quite happy with the food we are serving, and, as you mentioned, is included in the room rate. Additionally, we are located about half-way between the General Grant and the General Sherman Tree, and offer many more amenities to our guests than the other park lodges.

Our staff has been working exceptionally hard through this pandemic, so we appreciate guests who are cognizant that our staff are trying their best to serve our guests, but covid has created challenges...I am proud of the job that they are doing and most of our reviews reflect that guests understand things are out of necessity very different due to the pandemic, but despite that are enjoying their visit to Montecito and the parks.

Again, my sincere apologies for your experience, we try our best to make our guests happy and satisfied, but the pandemic has certainly been challenging for all of us and sometimes we fall short as we have done in your case.

Wishing you the very best in your future travels.

Sincerely,
T. Dally

Don't go to Montecito-Sequoia for a 5-star resort spa experience. This is all about the beauty of the mountains, great staff, comfortable rooms, mountain and lake activities, and simple but tasty food on offer. I love this place. Been coming here since it was a girls' camp and it still has the heart and spirit of the place I've loved for almost 50 years. Can't wait to return in the Spring!

Dear JJWreviewer,

Thank you for your wonderful review and welcome back to Montecito! We love having our former girls' campers and staff visit and take us down memory lane. It means a lot to us that you believe we still have the heart and spirit from your days with Pony!

I used to work for Montecito 15 years ago. It was a great place to visit and I would visit again. Lots of great memories there. I missed the very busy summer times with the available programs, fun people and great food. I miss the place already.

We have stayed twice here and enjoyed it each time. The staff was always super helpful, our rooms were nice, the lake was fabulous and the s'mores around the campfire were so much fun. However, on our latest stay, Aug. 25 and 26, 2020, the grounds were a total mess. No one was tidying up. A bag of trash and a used blanket remained outside a room next to ours the whole time we were there. Empty wine glasses (not ours) remained on a table for two days. Toys were strewn about the beach as if they had been there for days. The part of the lodge where people used to sit on couches and play games, before the pandemic, was a total mess. Montecito-Sequoia Lodge: Can you do something about this?

Dear Sunsetblvd,

We are so glad to hear that you had a lovely stay. Please note that covid has put additional stress on our staff, but we did make some changes to address these issues. As former guests, I believe you are aware that we ask guests to please bus their own tables...unfortunately, many guests didn't seem to adhere to this policy, and since we had to move all dining out of doors, it was more difficult for our staff to stay on top of things. We have made our guests more aware of our busing policies, and have assigned specific staff to clean certain areas. This has improved things greatly.

Thank you for your review and we hope to see you again soon!
