“Beautiful, Magical Place!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 10 July 2011

One of our most memorable stays in China. It is truly onerous to get to Shaxi (5 hours of buses etc. from Dali) but it's the China you imagined, and wished the rest of China actually looked like. Staying at the Dragonfly actually made the horrible transportation worth it. Sitting in the courtyard of the guest house, looking at the mountains peaking over the traditional Chinese roofs, is truly wonderful. Mr. Wu's wife makes the most delicious meals, and Mr. Wu is extremely helpful and speaks impeccable English. The inn itself was once an old theater that Mr. Wu turned into a guesthouse, so the architecture is incredible. The setting is breathtaking-- it sits on a terrace with the mountains behind it, overlooking the gorgeous rice fields. We loved sitting in front of the guesthouse, watching the sunset over the mountains, or sitting there after breakfast and watching villagers walking by with their livestock. It's a 3km walk to Shaxi, but the walk is doable; the location beats any directly in Shaxi itself, and the inn is very near Shibao mountain (which makes a lovely hike). Easily one of our best experiences in our entire trip to China, and one that I will always remember.

Pleasant, reasonably priced rooms are just the start of the Dragonfly Inn experience. Eating a Bai minority buckwheat pancake breakfast on an open air opera stage overlooking a quaint courtyard with an attractive range of hills as a backdrop is guaranteed to get your day off to a magical start, and then Wu Yunxin, the owner/manager, can keep the magic going with his encyclopedic knowledge of local history and lore. Definitely hire him as a guide to show you around if he is available.

Stayed at the Dragonfly a few nights ago. It was probably the most beautiful, and certainly the best value, place we stayed at in our Yunnan trip. The setting is lovely, the food delicious and the service is just right - friendly but not overwhelming. I would definitely recommend it - and will be doing so to friends and family in Beijing (where I live). Worth making a trip to Shaxi just to stay at this guesthouse - although the town is also lovely. My only advice is to book early - we got in touch a week before and we could only stay one night instead of two as they are deservedly popular.

Spent 1 night here when traveling between Lijiang and Tiger Leaping Gorge to see Shaxi and Shibao Shan. Beautiful location few km's outside of Shaxi perfect for relaxing and enjoying peace and solitude. Rooms comfortable and clean with 24hr hot water, electricity, and heating blankets. Food even better prepared simply with local flavor. Excellent value!

I am studying in China, but spent Februrary travelling in Yunnan's northwest.

Reaching Shaxi from Jianchuan County town poses no problems, and arriving in Duanjiadeng provides a welcome tonic for any ills experienced in other places...

Entering the courtyard, I was greeted by a smiling Mr Wu, waving as he looked down from the veranda. The first introduction represents the consistent warmth, quiet and politeness of all later interaction.

I remained at the Guesthouse for a week. Every day Mr Wu's wife prepares wonderful food for all who may require; often with the assistance of the pair's charming daughter.

The rooms are simple but more than readily equipped to fulfill for their function.

Although the majority of my time was spent outside - one could easily fritter away months, years even, simply exploring the valley - what time i did spend in the Guesthouse was in all instances itself worthwhile.

Alongside the numerous chance encounters and happenstance that colored my wanderings, I will always remember the evenings i spent indoors. Conversations with fellow traveler's, the early hours in the cool of the morning-room. Mrs Wu's smiles and her husband's studious calm.

I felt immensely privileged to stay here in this way. I simply hope that Mr Wu's undertakings and the Guesthouse surroundings do not in future undergo any too-drastic 'up-bringings'. ...

I hope to return some time again and will begin saving my scholarship now, to help me to fund a stay of a length more suited to giving the area the proper survey it deserves.

Mr. Wu's expertise and patience, combined with his family's honesty and warmth are sustaining. Given their setting that they are, each instance doubly shines.
